Ugandan creators can't join TikTok's Creator Rewards Program, because Uganda isn't on its list of eight countries. The route TikTok does document for you is LIVE Gifts: Diamonds are withdrawn in US dollars to PayPal or another payment channel, then converted into shillings.
If you're a Ugandan creator with a growing TikTok audience, you've probably been told by someone that the app pays you for views. For Uganda, it doesn't work like that, and I'd rather you hear it from me now than find out after months of posting. This guide sets out what TikTok does and doesn't offer people based in Uganda, and where real money can come from instead.
The straight answer on Creator Rewards for Ugandans
The programme most people mean when they say TikTok pays for views is the Creator Rewards Program. TikTok's own page lists the countries where it's open: the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Mexico and Brazil. You have to be based in one of those countries and have an account registered there. Uganda isn't on the list, so a Ugandan account can't apply, however many views it gets.
That's worth knowing because screenshots of big payouts get shared constantly, and they nearly always come from creators in those eight countries. Their earnings are not a preview of what Kampala, Gulu or Mbarara creators will be paid. If anyone offers to get you into the programme for a fee, I'd treat that as a scam.
The Shop and Subscription routes: what the official pages show
TikTok Shop is the next thing people ask about. The seller site's region menu lists markets such as the United States, Mexico, Brazil, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, Germany, France, Spain, Ireland, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium and the United Kingdom. Uganda isn't in that menu. I'm reading that as 'not listed', not as a ban, but it means there's no official route for a Ugandan to open a shop or sell through affiliate links on TikTok today.
I haven't been able to confirm from an official page whether Subscription is switched on for Uganda, so I won't promise it. TikTok Studio shows which programmes your account is eligible for, and that screen is the only reliable answer for your own profile.
LIVE Gifts: the one TikTok route that follows the rest-of-world rules
Where TikTok does publish rules that cover Uganda is the Virtual Items Policy, which has one version for the EEA and UK, one for India and one for creators whose residence is in any other country. That last version applies to you. It says viewers send Gifts, creators collect Diamonds, and Diamonds can be withdrawn as money denominated in US dollars. Payment goes to a nominated PayPal account or another third-party payment channel.
A few rules from that policy matter in practice:
- You must be 18, or the age of majority where you live. In Uganda that's 18, so most adults are fine.
- The first and last name on your TikTok payment details must exactly match your PayPal account.
- TikTok can check your identity and age before it pays.
- TikTok may deduct applicable taxes before payment.
- Diamonds are a measure of popularity and TikTok decides how they convert into money, so don't treat a Gift as a fixed amount of cash.
I couldn't confirm the follower count needed to go LIVE from an official page that would load, so check the LIVE option inside your own app. If it's missing, your account isn't eligible yet, and no setting or trick of mine will change that.
Why the shilling matters when the payout is in dollars
Your money is calculated in US dollars, but you spend it in Ugandan shillings. The shilling (UGX) is issued by the Bank of Uganda, and cents were dropped after 2013 because of inflation, so prices are in whole shillings, with banknotes running from 1,000 to 50,000. In practice that means conversion matters more than the payout itself. Ask whoever handles your PayPal withdrawal or bank account what rate and charges they apply, because the gap between the headline figure and what lands in shillings can be significant.
Tax is yours to sort out. TikTok itself says rewards may be taxable and that it can't give personal tax advice. Keep a record of every withdrawal and speak to a local accountant about what applies to you.

A realistic ladder for a Ugandan creator
Because the official routes are thin, here's how I'd order your options:
- Build the audience first. Pick one subject and post on a rhythm, because everything else depends on reach.
- Qualify for LIVE, then use it as a direct line to fans who want to support you.
- Sell your own thing: a service, a product, a class or a local business offer, and use TikTok to send people to WhatsApp or a shop link.
- Approach brands. Ugandan businesses can pay creators for content, and what they want to see is your audience and engagement, not a programme badge.
- Run a second platform. A channel where Uganda is covered by the official programmes gives you a payout that doesn't depend on TikTok at all.
On that last point, I've written about how TikTok views are valued in South Africa and about what YouTube pays for views in Uganda, and both are worth reading before you decide where to spend your time.

Mistakes I'd steer you away from
Don't buy followers or views to hit a threshold. TikTok says fraudulent or paid views don't count towards rewards. Don't hand your login to anyone promising to monetise you. And don't build your whole income on a programme that your country isn't in. TikTok's staff have said publicly that Africa hasn't been deliberately excluded from Creator Rewards, but nothing I can find promises a date for Uganda, so plan without it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I join the TikTok Creator Rewards Program from Uganda?
No. TikTok lists eight countries for the programme and Uganda isn't one of them, so a Ugandan account can't apply.
How does TikTok pay people in Uganda who receive LIVE Gifts?
Under TikTok's rest-of-world policy, Diamonds are withdrawn as US dollars to a nominated PayPal account or another third-party payment channel. Your name must match the account, and TikTok may check your identity, age and deduct taxes.
Is TikTok Shop available in Uganda?
Uganda isn't listed on the TikTok Shop seller site's region menu, so there's no official way to sell or earn affiliate commission through it from Uganda right now.
What age must I be to withdraw TikTok earnings in Uganda?
TikTok requires 18 or the age of majority where you live. In Uganda that's 18.
Will my TikTok money arrive in shillings?
TikTok calculates withdrawals in US dollars, so the shilling conversion happens through PayPal or your bank. Ask them about rates and charges, and talk to a local accountant about tax.
