Ethiopian creators can't join TikTok's Creator Rewards Program, and TikTok was reported blocked in Ethiopia in 2023, with no confirmed lifting. The documented route is LIVE Gifts, withdrawn in US dollars, but I couldn't confirm the payment channels work from inside Ethiopia.
Most guides to getting paid on TikTok start with programmes and payment methods. For Ethiopia I'd start somewhere else, because two things come before any of that: whether you can reliably use the app, and what happens to the money when it reaches a currency that has recently been through big changes. Then we'll get to what TikTok officially offers.
Access first: the 2023 block and what I can't confirm
According to Wikipedia, the Ethiopian government blocked various social media platforms indefinitely from 9 February in 2023, naming Facebook, Telegram, YouTube and TikTok. The article doesn't say whether the block was later lifted, and I couldn't find an official source that settles it. So I won't tell you TikTok is blocked, and I won't tell you it's fine.
What I'd say is this. If you rely on TikTok for income, test your own connection on the networks you use, and have a plan for the days it doesn't work. A creator who can't post, go LIVE or open their dashboard can't earn from any programme, however generous. Many people use VPNs in this situation, but that's your decision and your risk, and I'm not recommending it.
The official programme lists, with Ethiopia left off
TikTok's Creator Rewards Program is open in eight countries: the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Mexico and Brazil. You have to be based in one of them. Ethiopia isn't, so Ethiopian accounts can't apply.
TikTok Shop's seller site also leaves Ethiopia off its region menu. I'm calling that 'not listed' because TikTok hasn't said anything specific, but it does mean you shouldn't pay anyone who offers to register a shop for you.
What LIVE Gifts mean for an Ethiopian account
If your account can go LIVE, TikTok's Virtual Items Policy for creators outside the EEA, UK and India applies to you. Viewers send Gifts, you collect Diamonds, and Diamonds can be withdrawn as money denominated in US dollars through a nominated PayPal account or another third-party payment channel. You need to be 18 or the age of majority where you live, and in Ethiopia that's 18. TikTok can check your identity and age and may deduct taxes.
The question I couldn't answer is whether PayPal or another listed channel will work for you from inside Ethiopia. I didn't find an official page that settles it either way. Before you plan around Diamonds, ask your bank or payment provider which international payment channels they support and write down their answer.
The birr problem on top of the dollar payment
The Ethiopian birr (ETB) is issued by the National Bank of Ethiopia and divided into 100 santims. In 2024 the birr began floating as part of foreign exchange reforms. Wikipedia reports it fell 63% against the US dollar within a week of that change.
For a creator, a withdrawal calculated in US dollars means the conversion rate matters enormously, and it can move. If you ever receive one, find out which rate your bank applies, whether it uses an official or a parallel rate, and what fees it charges. Check the rules on holding foreign currency with a local accountant or your bank, because I can't advise on Ethiopian foreign exchange law.

Earning from the audience when TikTok payments are uncertain
- Treat TikTok as a shop window. Use it to reach people, then move them to Telegram, WhatsApp or another channel you control.
- Sell to Ethiopian customers in birr: coffee, clothing, tours, tutoring, design or event services all need local reach.
- Work with brands directly, on a rate you agree in advance, in the currency you can use.

- Keep everything you've built off one account, so a block or a policy change doesn't erase your audience.

Questions to ask before you invest more time
Can I open TikTok on my usual connection, today and next week? Does my bank say which international payment channels work for an Ethiopian account? Is there a second place where my audience can find me? If any of those answers is no, fix it before you spend another month filming. A good account that nobody can reach, or that can't be paid, is worth less than a smaller one you control.
What would change my answer
If TikTok adds Ethiopia to a programme list, publishes a payment channel that works there, or confirms access, I'd update this. Until then, plan around the audience you own, not the payment you hope for.
