Gemini works with Google Home through the Gemini mobile app: connect the Google Home app once and you can switch lights, set the thermostat, close blinds, pause the TV and start the vacuum by voice or text. As of October 2026 it needs Keep Activity switched on and a personal Google Account, and it won't open a smart lock or do anything on a security device that needs a PIN.
Google's help article on this is short, and it hides a few rules that trip people up. Here's what you can control, what has to be in place before it'll connect, the commands worth trying, and where I'd draw the line.
Which Google Home devices Gemini can run
Google groups the supported devices into five families. The connection covers every device your Google Account can reach in the Google Home app, including ones you add later, so you connect once rather than device by device.
| Device type | Examples Google lists | A command to try |
|---|---|---|
| Lights and power | Lights, outlets, switches | "Turn off all of the lights" |
| Climate control | Air conditioning units, thermostats, heaters, fans | "Raise the temp by 2 degrees" |
| Window coverings | Curtains, blinds, shutters | "Close the office blinds" |
| Media devices | TVs, speakers | "Pause the kitchen speaker" |
| Other smart devices | Washers, coffee makers, vacuums | "Vacuum the hallway" |
You can also broadcast messages to your smart home devices from the Gemini mobile app. If you work from home, that's the polite alternative to shouting up the stairs that the meeting room is free.
What has to be in place first
Google lists three requirements on its Android help page, as of October 2026:
- The Gemini mobile app, including as your mobile assistant. If you haven't set that up yet, start with my guide to Gemini on an Android phone.
- Keep Activity switched on. Google is blunt about this one: Gemini can't connect to Google Home when the setting is off.
- A personal Google Account. For now, the feature isn't available if you sign in to the Gemini app with a work or school account.
There are also three places it doesn't work yet: Gemini in Google Messages, the Gemini web app and Live chats. So if you're typing at gemini.google.com on your laptop and wondering why it won't dim the lights, that's the reason. It's a phone and tablet feature.
One honest note. The help article I'm working from is the Android phone and tablet version. Google keeps a separate iPhone and iPad version, so if you're on an iPhone, check that one rather than assuming every detail here matches.
Connect Google Home to the Gemini app, step by step
- On your phone or tablet, open the Gemini mobile app.
- Check you're signed in to the same Google Account you use in the Google Home app. This is the step people miss when the household's devices sit on a partner's account.
- Ask Gemini to do something to a device, for example "turn on living room lights".
- If Google Home isn't connected yet, Gemini offers you the option to connect it. Accept and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If Gemini answers without using Google Home, add @Google Home to your prompt and ask again.
Connecting gives Gemini permission to access and control the same homes and devices as that account in Google Home, including any added or shared with you later. You can connect or disconnect it at any time from Connected Apps settings, and this walkthrough of Gemini's Connected Apps screen shows where that lives.
Two tips from the same page. If Gemini on lock screen is on, you can ask for certain actions without unlocking your phone. And saying "Hey Google" works too, as long as Hey Google and Voice Match are set up.
Commands worth trying first
Google's own examples are more interesting than "turn on the light", because they show Gemini working out what you mean rather than waiting for a device name:
- "Set the dining room for a romantic date night"
- "Set the AC to a good temperature for sleeping"
- "Turn off the bedroom TV and lights"
- "The sun is too bright in the living room", which closes the window coverings
- "Help me clean up the kitchen", which starts the vacuum
For a home office or a small studio, I'd translate that into the jobs you repeat every day: "Turn off all of the lights" when you lock up, "Make it warmer" before a client call, "Turn off the meeting room TV" after a presentation.
On Android you can also ask Gemini to start a routine by voice or by typing. Some starters and actions aren't supported, and Gemini tells you when one isn't. That includes anything needing a back-and-forth, like Gemini asking what time you want an alarm set for. Answers now come back as voice and text only; Gemini no longer shows visual cards such as maps or detailed weather graphs.
Where Gemini stops: locks, PINs and safety
Google's wording here is worth reading twice. Home controls are for convenience only, not safety- or security-critical purposes, and you shouldn't rely on Gemini for requests that could cause injury or harm if they fail to start or stop.
As of October 2026, Gemini can't:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Complete security device actions that require a PIN, such as unlocking a door.
- Add or delete devices from your home. You manage and share devices in the Google Home app itself.
For anything unsupported, the Gemini app opens Google Home or gives you a link to it. That's sensible design, and it tells you how Google sees this feature: a remote control, not a security system.
Keep Activity, privacy and shared homes
Here's the trade-off the setup screen doesn't spell out. Keep Activity has to stay on for Google Home to work. With it on, Google stores your Gemini activity in your Google Account and auto-deletes it after 18 months by default, which you can change to 3 or 36 months or switch off. Google's privacy hub also says a subset of chats is reviewed by human reviewers to improve its services. So your home commands sit in the same activity as everything else you ask Gemini. You can review and clear that activity whenever you like, and here's how to delete your Gemini history.
Shared homes need a moment's thought too. Gemini can access information about devices you share with other household members in Google Home, and Google asks you to keep those people in mind. Switching off the lounge TV from your desk is a different thing when someone's halfway through a film.
If you're also weighing Google's paid home tier, that's a separate decision from this connection, and my breakdown of Google Home Premium covers it.
My verdict on Gemini with Google Home
I'd use it for lights, heating, blinds and the TV: everyday jobs where a missed command is a mild annoyance and nothing more. Skip it for locks, alarms and anything safety-related, which Google blocks it from doing anyway. And if you're not comfortable keeping Keep Activity on, skip the connection and use the Google Home app directly. Gemini features change often, so check Google's own help page for the latest before you build a routine around any of this.
If you'd like AI to take over the small daily jobs around your office or home, that's the kind of AI enablement I help with. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
