Gemini for Students (2026): The Google AI Student Offers, Who Qualifies and the Traps

Google doesn't hand students the paid Gemini plans for nothing: it runs student offers on Google AI Plus and Google AI Pro instead. As of Nov 2026 there are three (a 12-month Google AI Plus trial, a discounted Google AI Pro plan, and a Google AI Pro with YouTube Premium Student bundle), claimed at one.google.com/ai-student and verified through SheerID.

That's the short version. The longer one matters more, because the claim has a few traps that catch people out, and the offer quietly turns into a paid plan when it ends. Everything here comes from Google's own Google One Help page on student offers, read in Nov 2026.

The three student offers

Google's help page lists three offers, each with its own eligibility rules depending on the offer type and what's included:

OfferWhat you getWorth knowing
Google AI Plus trialA 12-month trial of Google AI PlusConverts to a paid Google AI Plus plan when it ends
Discounted Google AI ProGoogle AI Pro at a student discountConverts to a regular paid Google AI Pro plan
Google AI Pro with YouTube Premium StudentA bundle of the twoBecomes Google AI Pro, which may include YouTube Premium Lite

Here's the odd bit: the help page gives no prices at all. Not for the discount, not for what you pay afterwards. Check Google's own offer page for the current price before you sign up, and screenshot it so you know what you agreed to. If you want to know what Google AI Pro itself includes, I've covered that in what Google AI Pro gives you and who it suits.

Who qualifies

In general, Google says you need to be:

  • A student at a higher education institution, in a country or region where Google AI Plus and Google AI Pro are supported. Hong Kong, Macau and Tunisia are excluded.
  • Verified as a student through SheerID.
  • Signed in with a personal Google Account and holding a qualifying form of payment at sign-up.
  • Aged 18 or older, with your age verified on your Google Account at myaccount.google.com/age-verification.

New and existing Google One members can claim. Two groups can't: members of a family group (unless they leave the shared plan first), and anyone whose membership comes through a third-party partner, Pixel Pass or Google Fi.

The account rule trips up the most students. It has to be a personal Gmail account ending in gmail.com. Your university or school account isn't eligible, even though that's the one that proves you're a student. Supervised accounts managed through Family Link aren't eligible either.

How to claim it

  1. On your device, go to one.google.com/ai-student. Always start there, not from a link someone shared.
  2. Check you're signed in to the exact Google Account you want the offer on.
  3. Select a student offer.
  4. Verify your student status through SheerID when asked.
  5. Finish the subscription flow, adding a form of payment if you haven't already.

SheerID's document review normally takes a few minutes, but Google says it can take up to a few days during busy back-to-school periods. Don't keep resubmitting the form while you wait. There's a limited number of verification attempts, and burning them is the fastest way to lock yourself out.

Why the claim fails, and the fix

What went wrongWhat to do
Signed in with a different account from the one you verified withSwitch back. Verification can't be transferred to another account
Using a school or university accountUse a personal gmail.com account instead
Birthday mismatchThe birthday you give SheerID must match your Google Account birthday
You're in someone else's family planLeave the family group, or use a different personal account
Country mismatchYour Google Play country, or your Google Payments profile on iPhone, must match where you live and study
Errors in one browserStart again from the official page in another browser, such as Chrome, Firefox or Safari

The first row is the one I'd tattoo on my hand. Once you've verified, you must sign up with the same Google Account you used with SheerID. If you verify on one account and try to subscribe on another, it won't work, and Google's own tip says an error at claim time usually means exactly that.

If you already pay for Google One

How you're billed decides what happens. If you pay through Google Play, you don't need to cancel first: you can switch straight to the student plan during sign-up. If you pay through a third-party partner, such as the Apple App Store, Google Fi, Pixel Pass or a mobile carrier, you have to cancel that plan before you can sign up.

A few switching rules are worth knowing too. Signing up while you're on another Google One extended trial revokes that offer and moves you to the new one. A Google AI Pro member who switches to the student Google AI Plus trial stays on Google AI Pro until the end of the current billing cycle, and a Google AI Ultra member who switches to a student offer stays on Ultra until the cycle ends. Switch to the trial version of the plan you already have, though, and the change is immediate.

What happens when the offer ends

This is the catch. When your student offer ends, you automatically convert to a regular paid Google AI Plus or Google AI Pro plan, except where the law requires your consent. Google says it'll notify you ahead of the change, but a notice is easy to miss in a student inbox. Put your own reminder in the calendar a few weeks before the end date, and decide then whether you're keeping it.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Study notebooks for revision

One feature students will want is the study notebook. Google's Gemini Apps Help says you can upload notes or study materials and Gemini builds interactive lessons from them: diagnostic quizzes to find gaps, bite-sized personalised lessons based on your results, and progress tracking that updates as you go. You can also make flashcards and infographics from your course materials.

A few limits as of Nov 2026: study notebooks only work when Keep Activity is on, they're made at gemini.google.com (select Study and learn) rather than in the Gemini app on Mac, and you can't edit a study notebook's goal once it's set, so start a new notebook for a new exam. Based on your Google AI plan, a notebook can hold up to 600 sources. For Gemini as a tutor more generally, see my guide to Gemini Guided Learning.

Free Gemini or the student offer

Plenty of students won't need the offer at all. The free version of Gemini covers a lot of everyday study help, and I've set out what it includes in what you get from Gemini for free. The offer earns its place if you keep hitting limits or you want the extras that come with the paid plans.

What I'd do

I'd start with free Gemini for a fortnight and see whether it covers me. I'd skip the offer unless I know I'll use the extra, because the real cost arrives when it converts. If I did claim it, I'd use a personal gmail.com account, verify and subscribe on that same account in one sitting, and set a reminder before the end date. Offers and rules change often, so check Google's own help page for the latest.

If you're picking AI tools for a team or a graduate programme, that's the kind of AI enablement I help with. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gemini free for students?

Not the paid plans by default. Google runs student offers instead: a 12-month Google AI Plus trial, a discounted Google AI Pro plan and a Google AI Pro with YouTube Premium Student bundle.

Can I use my university email for the Gemini student offer?

No. Google says you must be signed in to a personal Gmail account ending in gmail.com; university or school accounts aren't eligible.

How long does SheerID verification take?

Normally a few minutes, but it can take up to a few days during busy back-to-school periods. Don't resubmit repeatedly, because verification attempts are limited.

What happens when the Google AI student offer ends?

You automatically convert to a regular paid Google AI Plus or Google AI Pro plan, except where the law requires consent, and Google notifies you ahead of the change.

Why does my student offer claim show an error?

Usually you're signed in with a different Google Account from the one you verified with. Verification can't be transferred, so switch back to the verified account.
