Gemini Deep Research runs in-depth research and writes a long report. On gemini.google.com, click Add Files, then Deep Research, choose your sources and ask your question. Gemini shows a research plan you can edit before it starts. Reports usually take five to ten minutes, open in Canvas, and can be exported to Google Docs or turned into an Audio Overview.
Gemini Deep Research is what you use when a quick answer isn't enough. You give it a question, it plans the research, reads widely, and comes back with a long, structured report. For a business owner, that's a competitor overview, a market snapshot or a briefing on a new regulation, done while you get on with something else.
This guide follows Google's help page and Deep Research overview. It covers how to start a report, how to steer the plan, which sources it can use, what to do with the report afterwards, and the limits worth knowing.
What is Gemini Deep Research?
Google describes it as in-depth, real-time research on almost any subject that ends in a long report. The key difference from a normal Gemini chat is the process. Gemini first builds a research plan, shows it to you, and only starts once you're happy with it. Then it works through the sources and writes the report.
Deep Research is available in 150 countries and more than 45 languages, and to Google Workspace users. You need to be 18 or over and signed in to the Gemini app.
How do I start a Deep Research report?
On desktop, Google's steps are:
- Open gemini.google.com.
- Click Add Files, then Deep Research.
- Optionally add your own files and choose your sources.
- Type your question and click Submit.
- Review the research plan, click Edit plan if you want changes, then click Start research.
Google's overview page puts it more simply: select Deep Research in the prompt bar to begin.
Why the research plan matters
The plan is your chance to stop Gemini wandering off-topic. Before it starts, read the plan and edit anything that's too broad or missing. If you want UK sources only, or a comparison of exactly four competitors, say so at this stage. A few minutes here saves you a report that answers the wrong question.

Research the market for [service] for small businesses in [country].
Cover: who the main providers are, how they describe their offer, what customers say they want,
and gaps a new provider could fill. Use reputable sources and note where each finding comes from.
Which sources can Deep Research use?
| Source | How it works |
|---|---|
| Google Search | On by default; you can deselect it to limit research to your other sources |
| Your uploaded files | Add documents when you start the report |
| Gmail and Google Drive | Only if Google Workspace is connected to Gemini Apps |
| Gemini Notebook notebooks | Notebooks from Google's research notebook tool, formerly NotebookLM |
| Google Chat | Listed on Google's overview page as an option you can choose |
Using your own sources is where Deep Research gets interesting for a business. Point it at your Drive folder of customer feedback, switch off Google Search, and you get a report built only from what your customers have told you.

Using only the files I've added, summarise what customers praise and complain about most.
Group the findings into themes, quote short examples for each,
and finish with three changes we could make first.
How long does Deep Research take?
Google says a report usually takes about five to ten minutes, and complex ones can take longer. You don't need to wait. You can leave the chat while it runs, and Gemini lets you know when it's done: in the thread on the web, or with a device notification on mobile.
What can you do with the report?
The finished report opens in Canvas, Gemini's editing workspace. From there you can:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Use Create to make an Audio Overview you can listen to, or a custom visual.
- Turn the report into an app, game, interactive quiz, web page or infographic.
- Share the Canvas, Export to Docs, or Copy contents.
Exporting to Google Docs is the step I'd never skip. It puts the report alongside your other files, where your team can comment and check the sources. My guide to Gemini Canvas explains the editing and sharing options in more detail.
How to write a good Deep Research question
Deep Research does its best work with a question that has edges. "Tell me about my industry" produces a long, general essay. "Compare how four named competitors describe their onboarding, and where their reviews mention delays" produces something you can act on. A few habits help:
- Name the audience for the report, such as you, your board or a new hire.
- Set the boundaries: country, time period, types of source, or named companies.
- Ask for the output you want, such as a comparison table, a list of risks or a short summary at the top.
- Ask it to show where each finding comes from, so checking is quick.
- Say what to leave out, such as basic definitions you already know.

I've got a sales call with [company] next week. Prepare a briefing on them:
what they sell, who they sell to, recent public news, and how they describe their priorities.
Put a five-line summary at the top and list every source at the end.
What are the limits of Deep Research?
- Daily research requests and the number you can run at once are limited. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers get higher limits and can use the Pro model; all users can use Thinking.
- On Google AI Ultra, reports can include charts, diagrams and interactive simulators, but not when Gmail or Drive are sources.
- Past reports can only be found again if Keep Activity is on.
- Google doesn't publish exact daily numbers per plan.
Deep Research now runs on Gemini 3. It's thorough, but it can still make mistakes, so check the sources behind any claim before it goes into a decision or a client document. I'd pay special attention to anything that sounds surprising, any number that matters to a decision, and anything about a named person or company. Open the source, read the line it came from, and only then rely on it.
Good uses of Deep Research for a small business
- A briefing on a competitor before a sales call.
- A summary of new rules affecting your sector, with sources to check.
- Background research for a blog post or talk.
- A digest of customer feedback from files in your Drive.
- An overview of software options before you book demos.
If you write a lot of long-form content, I've also covered how AI tools speed up research-heavy writing.
Tools that work with Gemini Deep Research
Deep Research connects most naturally with Google's own tools: Gmail, Google Drive and Google Chat as sources, Google Docs as the export, and Gemini Notebook for keeping research collections you can reuse. Outside Google, Notion or Airtable is a good place to store the findings you act on, and Zotero suits anyone who keeps a library of references.
