A Gemini avatar is a recording of your own face and voice that Gemini uses to put you into videos made with Gemini Omni and images made with Nano Banana. As of October 2026 you need to be 18 or over with a personal Google Account, it's English only, and it isn't available in the United Kingdom, the EEA or Switzerland.
You record yourself once, on your phone, and from then on you can drop yourself into a prompt by name. You can also share it, so other people can put your likeness and voice into their own images and videos. That last part is where I'd slow down, and I'll come back to it.
What a Gemini avatar is for
Once it exists, your avatar shows up in prompts as @ followed by your Google username. Google's example prompts are playful: an image of you singing with an orchestra, a story where you're the main character facing a dragon. For a business, the obvious uses are a short explainer video with you in it, or a set of social images without booking a shoot.
The avatar works with two tools. Video comes through Gemini Omni, covered in my guide to making videos with Gemini Omni, and images come through Nano Banana, covered in my Nano Banana guide. One condition worth knowing up front: to create a video with your personal avatar, Google says you need a Google AI plan.
Who can make one, as of October 2026
| Requirement | What Google says |
|---|---|
| Age | 18 or over |
| Account | Signed in with a personal Google Account |
| Language | English only, for now |
| Where | Not available in the EEA, Switzerland or the United Kingdom |
| Videos with your avatar | Need a Google AI plan |
If you're in the UK, that's a straight no for now, whatever plan you're on. Google says avatars are "currently" unavailable there, so it may change, but I wouldn't plan a campaign around it.
Create your avatar, step by step
- On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
- In the text box at the bottom, click Add Files, then More uploads, then Avatar.
- Scan the QR code with your phone or tablet.
- Follow the on-screen instructions on your phone to record your face and voice. You'll need to allow access to your camera and microphone.
- Go back to your computer and click Use Avatar to finish.
- Not happy with it? Click Retake to record again.
Recording tips so it's accepted
Google lists what makes a recording pass. They're all simple, and they're all things people get wrong at the kitchen table:
- Phone position: hold it at eye level.
- Lighting: not too dim, not too bright.
- Visibility: eyes, nose and mouth in view. Glasses are fine; sunglasses, masks and hats aren't.
- Sound: a quiet room, with no other voices in the background.
- Background: no other people, and no pictures of faces behind you either. That framed photo on the shelf counts.
- Who records: the account owner must do it, and Google says minors must not record themselves.
Use it in a prompt, share it or take it back
To use your avatar, click Add files in the text box and choose your avatar, or type @ and pick your Google username from the menu. You can retake the recording at any time from Settings, then Personal avatar.
Sharing is done from Settings too:
- On the bottom left, click Settings, then Avatar.
- Enter the Gmail address of the person you want to share with.
- Read the on-screen information, then click Share.
- The other person can accept or decline. They need to accept before they can use your likeness.
To stop sharing, go to Settings, then Avatar, then Who can use your avatar. Pick the person and click Remove. From the same list you can set, update or remove expiration dates for anyone you've shared with, which is the most useful control on the whole feature.
Delete your avatar
- Click Settings, then Personal avatar.
- On the top right, click Delete. This takes you to the Selfie video page of your Google Account.
- Under the selfie and voice recording you want to remove, click Delete, and follow the prompts.
Once deleted, you can't create new AI content with that avatar, and Google says your recorded selfie and voice data for it are removed from its systems. To use the feature again, you'd record a new one from scratch.
The catch: your likeness outlives the setting
Here's the part to read before you share. Google says that removing someone's access stops them making new images or videos with your avatar, but it doesn't delete anything they already made with your likeness or voice. Deleting your avatar works the same way: videos or content already made and published with it aren't deleted.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
So once you've shared it, you've handed over something you can't fully pull back. That's not a reason to avoid the feature. It's a reason to treat sharing like lending someone your signature.
My verdict: I'd skip sharing your avatar widely. If a collaborator needs it, share it with that one person for that one project, set an expiration date, and delete the avatar when the project's done. Make your own content with it first and see whether it earns a place in your marketing before anyone else gets access. Avatar features change often, so check Google's own help page for the latest, and if video's the goal, remember it needs a Google AI plan such as AI Pro.
If you're thinking about using AI video of yourself in your marketing, that's the kind of AI training I run. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
