The short version: there are a handful of open world games under 100MB that run offline on old or storage-tight tablets, and most "best of" lists online pad their numbers with games that are either online-only, bigger than advertised, or not open world. I've gone through what's left and what's worth your storage.

I write mostly about AI and marketing, but I spend a fair amount of time on planes, in waiting rooms and at my kids' activities with a tablet in hand that has about 4GB of free space on a good day. If you've ever tried to download a "lightweight" open world game only to find it's 1.2GB once the extra data pack installs, you'll know why this list matters. Under 100MB isn't a marketing promise on these ones. I checked the actual download size on the app store listing for each.

Why under 100MB even matters in 2026

Most people assume storage isn't a problem anymore because phones and tablets ship with 128GB or more. That's true for new devices. It's not true for the tablet your nine year old uses, the one you bought your parent three years ago, or the budget Android tablet that schools and small businesses still buy in bulk because it's cheap and good enough for email and video calls. Those devices often have 16GB or 32GB total, and half of that is eaten by the operating system before you've installed a single app.

There's also a simpler reason: open world games, by nature, have big worlds to render. Making one fit under 100MB means serious compromises somewhere, usually in texture quality, map size, or how much is streamed versus stored locally. Knowing that upfront sets the right expectations. You're not getting a pocket-sized GTA. You're getting a small, playable sandbox that doesn't need wifi and won't fill your tablet.

The games that qualify

  • Vampire's Fall: Origins - an open world RPG with a real map to explore, turn-based combat and a day/night cycle, and it sits around 85MB on most Android listings. It plays fully offline once downloaded.
  • Evil Lands: Online Action RPG (offline mode available) - despite the name, it has an offline single-player mode with an open map, and the core download is usually under 90MB before optional texture packs.
  • Zombie Age 3 - not a classic open world in the roam-anywhere sense, but it has free-roam zones between missions and comes in at roughly 60MB, which makes it worth including for anyone who wants something lighter.
  • Toon Shooters 2 - a run-and-gun with open stage design, around 70MB, fully offline.
  • Ocean Nomad: Survival RPG - open sea exploration with survival mechanics, typically listed around 95MB.

Notice what's missing: Minecraft, GTA San Andreas, and most of the big sandbox names people search for. They're brilliant games, but none of them come close to 100MB, and anyone telling you otherwise is either rounding generously or hasn't checked the current app store size.

A worked example: kitting out a kid's old tablet

Say you've got a spare tablet with 16GB storage, of which about 5GB is free after the operating system and a couple of apps like a camera and a reading app. You want to add two or three offline open world games for a long car journey, with no wifi guaranteed en route.

Here's how I'd approach it, step by step:

  • Step 1: check available storage first (Settings, then Storage) rather than guessing. On a 16GB device you'll likely see 4 to 6GB free.
  • Step 2: download on wifi at home, never on mobile data, since some apps pull extra assets on first launch even if the initial install is small.
  • Step 3: pick two games, not five. Vampire's Fall: Origins (85MB) plus Toon Shooters 2 (70MB) comes to roughly 155MB combined, which leaves plenty of headroom for save files, which can grow over weeks of play.
  • Step 4: test offline before you leave. Switch the tablet to airplane mode and open each game fully to confirm it loads without needing a connection check.
  • Step 5: clear cache on anything you're not using that month. Games like these rarely need more than 150 to 200MB total including save data even after heavy use.

That whole process takes about fifteen minutes and solves the actual problem, which is not "what games exist" but "what games will reliably work when there's no signal and no spare storage."

The part most lists won't tell you

Here's the bit that gets glossed over: almost every "free offline open world game under 100MB" list you'll find has been copy-pasted from an older list, and several of the games named on them have since been updated to require internet for ads, cloud saves, or in-app purchases, even though the core gameplay is offline. App sizes also creep up over time as developers add content, so a game that was 75MB two years ago might be 140MB now. Always check the current size on the store page before you download, not the number quoted in an article, including this one. Sizes change with updates, sometimes within weeks.

The other uncomfortable truth is that "open world" gets used loosely. A lot of these games are closer to "open hub" games, where you open up areas sequentially rather than roam a open map from the start. If you want a stricter definition of open world with more freedom and don't mind a slightly bigger install, it's worth looking at this list of offline open world games under 50MB for 4GB RAM devices, which covers games that lean more heavily into true exploration even on more limited hardware.

If 100MB still feels like a squeeze

For tablets that can't spare even 100MB, text-based games are the most storage-efficient option going, often under 20MB, and still give you a real sense of exploring a world through choices and branching stories rather than graphics. There's a good roundup of these in my piece on text based games on Android for story lovers, which is worth a look if storage is the single biggest constraint rather than graphics quality.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

If the tablet in question belongs to a younger child and you want something gentler than combat-focused RPGs, football games are a reliable middle ground, and I've covered lightweight options in best free offline football games for iPhone for kids, several of which have Android equivalents under similar size limits.

Where to go bigger if storage isn't tight

If you're reading this because you assumed 100MB was a hard limit but you've got 1 to 2GB spare, it's worth knowing what opens up. RPGs with real character progression and bigger maps become available, and I've gone through the better ones in best free offline RPG games for 2GB RAM phones, most of which run fine on tablets too since the RAM requirement is the real bottleneck, not the screen size.

And if open world isn't the only genre on the table, parkour and movement-based games offer a different kind of freedom within a small map, which I covered in this guide to parkour games across free phone picks and PC options. Worth a look if what you want is freedom of movement rather than a sprawling map.

A quick note on platforms

This list is Android-focused because that's where most budget and hand-me-down tablets run, and because Android app stores are generally more transparent about download size than iOS, where the listed size sometimes excludes additional content packs. If you're working with an iPad specifically, expect most of the games above to have iOS versions, but double-check the size on the App Store before downloading, since it can differ from the Android figure by 10 to 20MB either way.

For anyone managing several family or work tablets and bored of fighting storage limits every few months, it might be time to think about whether the device itself needs replacing rather than squeezing another small game onto it. A tablet with 64GB rather than 16GB solves this problem permanently for not much more money, and that's often the better long-term fix than chasing ever-smaller app sizes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the smallest truly open world game for Android?

Among offline open world games, Vampire's Fall: Origins is one of the smallest at around 85MB, with a real explorable map and turn-based combat rather than a linear mission structure.

Do these games need wifi to play after downloading?

No, all the games listed here are designed to run fully offline once installed, though it's worth testing in airplane mode before relying on them for travel, since some apps still attempt a connection check on launch.

Why do app sizes change after I've read a list like this?

Developers push updates that add content, fix bugs, or introduce new monetisation features, and these often increase the download size over time, so always check the current figure on the app store rather than trusting a fixed number from an article.

Is 100MB enough for a good open world experience?

It's enough for a small, playable sandbox with exploration and some combat or survival mechanics, but don't expect the scale or detail of console-style open world games, which are compromises deliberately made to fit the smaller file size.
