A maze generator builds a maze for you at the size and difficulty you choose, ready to print as a worksheet or to drop into a puzzle book. Some are free classroom tools, some offer shapes and answer keys and some licence their mazes for books you'll sell. Nine options follow in no particular order.
Wet playtimes, long car journeys, activity packs for a restaurant table and puzzle books for Amazon all run on the same thing: a stack of mazes that look different from each other.
The nine tools below cover quick classroom maze makers, generators with shapes and answer keys and tools licensed for commercial use. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you'd like other printable puzzles too, my guide to free printable puzzles has more.

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website or store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page says the tool, or a plan, account or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

A perfect maze has exactly one way through
Wolfram MathWorld defines a perfect maze as one that connects all of its cells and has a unique path between every pair of cells, which means its open passages form a spanning tree.
Most generators make perfect mazes by default, so there's one route from start to finish and no loops. That's ideal for a worksheet with an answer key. It's less fun for younger children, who give up after one dead end, so look for a generator that lets you remove walls or make the maze smaller. And if you're making a puzzle book to sell, check the generator's licence, because some sites don't allow commercial use.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Free classroom tool or commercial licence?
A free classroom tool is perfect for worksheets, homework and rainy days, and some add your own title at the top of the page.
A generator with shapes and answer keys gives you more variety, such as circles, hearts or hexagons, plus a solution page for checking.
A commercial licence matters the moment the maze goes into something you'll sell, such as a printed activity book or a download.
Six settings to choose for each maze
- The size of the grid.
- The shape of the maze.
- Where the entrance and exit go.
- How thick the walls are.
- Whether to print the solution.
- Which file type you'll export.
Signs a maze is too hard for its audience
- The paths are thinner than a pencil line. Go bigger.
- Nobody finishes. Shrink the grid.
- The exit is hidden. Mark start and finish.
- It prints across two pages. Resize it.

My plain advice on making printable mazes
Match the maze to the person solving it, not to what looks impressive on screen. A small, wide-walled maze that a six-year-old finishes is worth more than a giant one they abandon. Print one, try it yourself with a pencil, then make the rest.
If you're turning mazes into a product, read my honest look at selling printables before you build a whole book.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a maze for free?
Use a free maze generator, choose the size and shape, then print it or download it as a PDF or image.
Can I sell mazes I generate online?
Only if the tool's licence allows commercial use. Some maze sites say their mazes aren't free for commercial use.
What is a perfect maze?
A maze with exactly one path between any two points, so there are no loops.
How do I make a maze easier for kids?
Use a smaller grid, thicker walls and a clear start and finish, or remove a few walls to add extra routes.
Can I get an answer key for a maze?
Yes. Several generators print or show the solution alongside the maze.
Can I make a maze in a shape?
Yes. Some generators make circular, shaped or image mazes as well as square ones.
