Image to Prompt Generators: 9 Free Tools Compared

An image to prompt generator looks at a picture and writes a text prompt that describes its subject, style, lighting and mood, so you can reuse or adapt it in an AI image tool. Some are free web tools, some are built into image generators and one is open source. Nine options follow in no particular order.

You've found a picture with exactly the mood you want, but you can't work out the words that would get an AI image tool anywhere near it.

That's what image to prompt tools are for: they describe the picture back to you as a prompt. The nine below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you'd rather start from words, my AI image prompt generator works the other way round.

Image to prompt tools at a glance

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website or store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version, a free account, a free edition, an open source release or says the tool itself is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Best for: Creators who already edit in an online photo tool and want image to prompt in the same place.

Ideogram

Best for: Designers already generating images there who want its Describe feature to suggest prompts from a reference picture.

ImagePrompt.org

Best for: Creators with many reference pictures who want single uploads, pasted links and a batch image to prompt option.

ImageToPrompt.co

Best for: People switching between image models who want prompts written for several of the popular image generators at once.

Imagetoprompt.org

Best for: Storytellers and game makers who want separate describers for characters and scenes as well as general prompts.

Midjourney

Best for: Subscribers who want the built-in Describe command to suggest longer, detailed prompts from their own images.

Picsart

Best for: Mobile creators who want to turn any photo into a detailed prompt inside a creative app they already use.

Vheer

Best for: Experimenters who want image to prompt beside text to image and image to image tools on one site.

Picking an image to prompt tool

  • Inside the image tool you already use: Midjourney or Ideogram.
  • Next to everyday photo edits: Fotor or Picsart.
  • Lots of reference images: ImagePrompt.org.
  • Prompts for several models: ImageToPrompt.co.
  • Characters and scenes: Imagetoprompt.org.
  • Prompt, then generate, on one site: Vheer.
  • Open source you can run yourself: CLIP Interrogator.

In its report on copyright and artificial intelligence, the U.S. Copyright Office concluded that AI outputs can be protected by copyright only where a human author has determined sufficient expressive elements, and that this doesn't include the mere provision of prompts.

Two things follow. A prompt reverse-engineered from someone else's picture doesn't give you rights over their work, and the image you generate from it isn't protected just because you typed the words. What counts is the creative choices you make yourself.

Using a reverse prompt well

Treat the generated prompt as a first draft. These tools are good at naming the subject, the lighting and the style, and less reliable at small details like hands, text or brand names.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Swap in your own subject, keep the style words you like and delete anything that describes a real person or a recognisable trademark.

Each image model reads prompts a little differently, so a prompt tuned for one may need trimming or reordering for another.

Questions to ask before you upload a picture

  1. Do you have the right to use the reference image?
  2. Which image model will you paste the prompt into?
  3. Does the tool keep or delete your upload afterwards?
  4. Can it handle several images at once?
  5. Does the prompt include style, lighting and camera words?
  6. Can you edit the prompt before you generate?

Prompts feed image tools of all kinds, and the full collection of creator tool lists covers the others.

Signs a reverse prompt will help

  • You know the look but not the words. Let the tool name it.
  • Your prompts come out flat. Borrow lighting and lens terms.
  • You need a consistent series. Reuse one base prompt.
  • You're switching image models. Rewrite the prompt for each.

Do you make an image to prompt tool? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on image to prompt tools

Run the same picture through two tools and read both prompts side by side. Keep the words they agree on, cut the guesses, then add the one or two details that make the image yours.

Once you've got a draft, the craft is in the edit. My guide to writing better AI image prompts shows how to tighten it up.

Frequently asked questions

What does image to prompt mean?

It means uploading a picture and getting back a text prompt that describes it, so you can recreate a similar style or scene with an AI image generator.

Are image to prompt tools free?

Many web tools are free to use, sometimes with daily limits, and some image generators include the feature for subscribers. Check the free plan column above.

Will the prompt recreate the exact image?

No. You'll get something in a similar style, but AI image tools rarely reproduce a picture exactly from a description.

Can I use a prompt from someone else's image?

You can take inspiration, but copying a recognisable work or a real person's likeness can cause problems. Use the prompt as a starting point and make it your own.

Do image generators have this built in?

Some do. A few AI image generators include a describe feature that suggests prompts from your upload, and several web tools write prompts tuned for specific models.

Is an image to prompt tool the same as an image describer?

They're close. A describer writes plain sentences for people, while an image to prompt tool writes in the style AI image generators respond to.
