Free helicopter games on Android are mostly gunship shooters, where you fire on enemies from the air, plus a calm open-world flight simulator and a dinosaur rescue game for young children. Three of the seven here are rated Teen, and Modern War Choppers says it has offline modes.
The sound of rotor blades is half the fun of a helicopter, and the other half is that they can hover. Games use that to put you right above the action, whether that's a battle or a dinosaur waiting to be rescued.
I opened ten listings that came up for helicopter games and kept seven, noting each developer, the installs, rating, ads and in-app purchases labels and any offline wording. The order is not a ranking.
Three popular flight sims didn't make it. Flight Pilot: 3D Simulator, Infinite Flight Simulator and Airplane Flight Simulator EVO came up in the search, but their listings talk about planes and airliners, not helicopters, so they belong on a different page.

Rotor by rotor
Gunship Strike 3D
A 3D combat game that puts you in the gunner's seat of an attack helicopter on missions against terrorists. It's rated Teen.
GUNSHIP BATTLE: Helicopter 3D
Fly combat helicopters and other vertical take-off aircraft on missions around the world. It's rated Teen, and its listing hasn't been updated in years, so check it still runs well.
Helicopter Escape 3D
A third-person helicopter shooter where you rescue a hostage from zombies, gangsters and henchmen. Rated Everyone 10+.
Heli Monsters - Giant Hunter
Same studio as Helicopter Escape 3D, but the enemies are giant monsters. You fire from the sky while helping someone escape. Rated Teen.
Modern War Choppers: Shooter
A helicopter-versus-helicopter shooter with a hangar to fill. Its listing says it has both online and offline modes, including a solo campaign.
Dinosaur Helicopter Kids Games
A rescue game for young children, where you fly a helicopter to save dinosaur friends. It shows no Contains ads label and is rated Everyone.
Helicopter Flight Pilot
The calm one: an open-world helicopter simulator where you simply fly, with base jumping activities on top. Rated Everyone.
Gunships, rescues and free flight
Gunship Strike 3D, GUNSHIP BATTLE, Helicopter Escape 3D, Heli Monsters and Modern War Choppers are shooters. The helicopter is a weapons platform, and the fun is in the action rather than the flying.
Helicopter Flight Pilot goes the other way, with an open world to fly around and nothing chasing you. Dinosaur Helicopter Kids Games is a gentle rescue game for little ones.
Age ratings vary a lot
- Teen: Gunship Strike 3D, GUNSHIP BATTLE and Heli Monsters.
- Everyone 10+: Helicopter Escape 3D and Modern War Choppers.
- Everyone: Dinosaur Helicopter Kids Games and Helicopter Flight Pilot.
- Ads: six show a Contains ads label. The dinosaur game doesn't.
- Shops: all seven have in-app purchases, so turn on approval for in-app purchases in Google Play.
First flight tips for touch controls
- Fly slowly at first. Most crashes come from turning too fast.
- Gain height before you turn.
- Use the camera view that shows the ground clearly.
- Practise landing on a flat, open spot.
- Turn sensitivity down in settings if the controls feel twitchy.
Shooters for older players, flying for everyone
It's worth being clear about the shooters. Gunship Strike 3D talks about terrorists, Helicopter Escape 3D about zombies and gangsters, and Heli Monsters about giant monsters. None of that's graphic in the way a console war game can be, but it's why three of them carry a Teen rating.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
If you've got a younger child who just loves helicopters, the dinosaur rescue game and the free-flight simulator are the ones to start with. They'll get the whirring blades and the view from above without anyone being shot at.
And if you're playing yourself, don't dismiss the calm simulator. Flying low over an open world with nothing to fight is surprisingly relaxing after a long day, and you'll get better at the controls for the shooters too.
Hovering without a signal
Modern War Choppers is the only listing here that mentions offline play. For a flight, you'll want a few more options, and my list of free games to play on a plane without Wi-Fi is built for exactly that.
