Free AI Website Builders With No Coding: What Works for Beginners in 2026

The short version: Free AI website builders like Wix, Durable, Hostinger AI, and GoDaddy Airo can get you a live website in under an hour with no coding, but "free" almost always means a subdomain, their branding, and limited pages until you upgrade. Use the free version to test your idea and get your words and layout right, then decide if you need to pay before you launch.

What these tools do (and don't)

An AI website builder asks you a handful of questions, usually your business name, what you do, and who you serve, then it generates a full site: homepage, an about page, maybe a contact form, sometimes a blog. Wix's AI tool does this in about two minutes. Durable claims 30 seconds and it's not far off. The AI writes placeholder copy, picks a colour scheme, pulls stock images, and lays out sections that already look like a real business rather than a template you filled in yourself.

What it does not do is understand your business the way you do. I've watched these tools describe a florist as "passionate about excellence" and a plumber as "committed to innovative solutions." That copy will need rewriting, every single time, no exceptions. Treat the AI output as a skeleton, not a finished product.

The builders worth trying, and what free really gets you

I've built test sites on most of the major ones over the past year, partly for my own curiosity and partly because clients keep asking me which one to pick. Here's what's true right now, not what the marketing pages say.

  • Wix AI Website Builder: free plan gives you a Wix subdomain (yourname.wixsite.com), Wix branding in the corner, and limited storage. Removing the ads and connecting your own domain starts around £10 to £16 a month depending on the plan.
  • Durable: builds a full site including a basic CRM and invoicing in around 30 seconds. The free trial is just a trial, seven days, and after that you're paying roughly £12 to £15 a month to keep the site live. It's fast but not free long term.
  • Hostinger AI Website Builder: no truly free tier for a live public site, but the AI generator itself is free to play with before you commit, and paid plans start under £2 a month on promotional pricing, which is the cheapest route to a real domain I've found.
  • GoDaddy Airo: free to build and preview, but you need a paid domain and hosting plan to publish, which usually runs from around £6 a month upward.
  • Canva Websites: this is the one that's free to publish with no forced upgrade for a simple one-pager, using a canva.site subdomain. It's basic, no blog, no ecommerce, but if you need a landing page today with zero budget, this is the honest free option.

Notice the pattern. Almost every "free AI website builder" is really a free AI website generator with a paid publishing step hiding behind it. That's not a scandal, hosting and a domain cost the company money, but it's rarely stated plainly on the landing pages, and it's the thing beginners get caught out by most often.

What happened when I timed myself building one

Last year I ran a small experiment for a talk I was giving, I gave myself 20 minutes to build a live, presentable one-person consulting site using nothing but an AI builder and my phone, sitting in a hotel lobby in Tel Aviv. I used Durable. Answered five questions about my business, picked a template from the three it offered, and had a homepage, services page, and contact form generated in under a minute. The bit that took the other 18 minutes was fixing the AI's copy, it had written that I offered "cutting-edge solutions for forward-thinking enterprises," which is the kind of sentence that makes me want to close the laptop and go home. I swapped in three real client results, changed the headline to something a human would say out loud, and deleted two stock photos that looked like they'd been in every SaaS pitch deck since 2019. The site was live, on a Durable subdomain, in 20 minutes flat. It looked fine. Would I have sent a paying client to it as their final website? No. But as a proof of concept, or a placeholder while you build the real thing, it did exactly what it promised.

Step by step: getting your first site live today

If you've never built a website before, here's the actual sequence that works, in order.

  • Write your business name, one sentence on what you do, and who your customer is, before you open any tool. The AI needs input, garbage in gets you garbage copy out.
  • Pick one builder and commit to it for a day. Don't tool-hop, it wastes more time than it saves.
  • Answer the AI's setup questions honestly and specifically. "I sell handmade candles to people who want low-scent options for pets" beats "I sell candles" every time, the output is noticeably better.
  • Once the site generates, rewrite the headline first. That's the one line most visitors read.
  • Replace at least the homepage images with real photos if you have any, even phone photos beat generic stock images for trust.
  • Add your real contact details and one genuine testimonial or result before you consider it "done."
  • Decide then, and only then, whether you need the paid domain. Test on the free subdomain first, see if the idea has legs.

That whole process takes most people between one and three hours the first time. The second site you build takes twenty minutes, because you already know what to skip.

Where these tools quietly fall down

Here's the bit that gets glossed over on most "best free AI website builders" lists. These tools are brilliant for a single page or a small brochure site. They are not built for a business that needs to grow, add a blog you'll post to weekly, run an online shop with more than a handful of products, or rank in search over time. The AI-generated code on most of these platforms is locked into their system, you can't export it and take it somewhere better later without starting again from scratch. I've had two clients come to me after 18 months on a free AI builder, wanting to add booking systems and blog functionality, and the answer both times was: rebuild, don't extend. That's an uncomfortable thing to tell someone who thought "free" meant "done." If you can already picture your business needing a proper content strategy, multiple product categories, or custom functionality within the next year, it's cheaper in the long run to learn the basics of WordPress design and development now rather than migrate later when you've got customers depending on the site working.

When a proper WYSIWYG builder beats the AI version

AI builders are fast because they make the decisions for you. That's exactly the problem once your business has specific needs. If you want more control over layout, better ecommerce features, or a site that doesn't scream "I built this in twenty minutes," a traditional drag-and-drop WYSIWYG builder gives you the same no-code simplicity with far more flexibility. I've written up the ones I'd recommend for a growing small business in my guide to the best WYSIWYG website builders, and it's worth reading before you sink a year into a platform you'll outgrow.

Which one should you pick

For a genuine test-the-idea landing page with zero spend, Canva Websites is the most honest free option right now. For a five-page small business site where you're willing to pay a few pounds a month once you know the idea works, Hostinger AI Website Builder gives the best value I've found. For speed and a slightly more polished first draft, Wix's AI tool is still the most capable at generating something that doesn't look obviously templated. None of these replace strategy. The AI builds you a container. What goes in it, your offer, your pricing, your actual proof that you can deliver, is still entirely on you. If building the website is step one of a bigger plan to make money on the side or replace an income, it's worth looking at where a simple site fits into a wider list of side hustles you can start this week, because the website alone rarely pays the bills, it just gives whatever you're selling somewhere to live.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

What comes after the website is live

Once the site exists, most beginners freeze, because a live site with no visitors feels like nothing happened. It didn't, yet. Getting found matters more than the site looking pretty. A free listing in relevant directories, a handful of guest posts on blogs that accept them linking back to your new site, and one clear call to action on your homepage will do more for you in month one than another hour spent tweaking fonts. And if you're building this site as part of a bigger push into working for yourself with AI tools doing the heavy lifting, it's worth reading how a one-person AI business gets structured, because the website is one small piece of that puzzle, not the whole thing.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a truly free AI website builder with no hidden costs?

Canva Websites is the closest to free for publishing, using a canva.site subdomain with no forced paid upgrade for a basic one-page site. Almost every other AI builder, including Wix, Durable, and GoDaddy Airo, gives you a free generator but charges for the domain, removing branding, or keeping the site live long term.

Can I really build a website with no coding knowledge at all?

Yes. Every builder listed here is designed for people with zero technical background, you answer questions in plain English and the AI generates the layout, copy, and images for you. The only skill you need is being able to rewrite the AI's generic copy into something that sounds like your business.

How long does it take to build a site with an AI website builder?

The AI generation itself takes 30 seconds to two minutes on most platforms. Getting a version you'd show a customer, with real copy, images, and contact details, takes most beginners between one and three hours the first time, and gets faster on every site after that.

Should I use an AI website builder or hire someone to build my site?

Use an AI builder first if you're testing an idea with no budget or need something live today, it costs nothing to try. Move to a proper build, whether that's WordPress or hiring help, once you know the business works and you need features like a blog, bookings, or ecommerce that the free tools can't handle well.
