Is Cal AI Free? The Download Is, the Food Scanning Isn't

Cal AI is free to download, but it isn't free to use for its main job. The app's own App Store listing says food scanning analysis results require a subscription, so snapping a photo of your meal and getting the calories back is a paid feature. You can start with a free trial and cancel it in your phone's settings.

That's the short answer, and it's worth knowing before you spend ten minutes answering the setup questions. Below is what Cal AI says the app does, what the App Store lists as in-app purchases as of October 2026, and exactly how to cancel a trial or subscription so you don't get charged by surprise.

What Cal AI does

Cal AI is a calorie tracking app from Viral Development LLC. Its website says you can snap a photo, scan a barcode or describe your meal and get calorie and nutrient information back. It says the app uses your phone's depth sensor to estimate food volume, then breaks a meal down into calories, protein, carbs and fat. You can also add your own foods and recipes.

The App Store listing describes the flow in three steps: answer lifestyle questions to build your plan, snap a photo of your meal, then get your nutritional breakdown. The last two steps carry an asterisk, and the note at the bottom of the listing explains it: food scanning analysis results require a subscription.

What's free and what's paid in Cal AI

Photo scanning of meals and the nutrition resultsNoYes, per the App Store listing
Logging food (the + button)NoCal AI's FAQ says the + button opens the paywall

That FAQ detail is the giveaway. Cal AI's own help answer for people who've paid but still see a paywall says to tap the + button to log food, which opens the paywall screen, then tap Restore Purchase. In other words, logging is behind the paywall for anyone who hasn't subscribed.

What Cal AI costs, as of October 2026

Cal AI doesn't publish a price table on its website. The US App Store listing shows the in-app purchases instead. As of October 2026 it lists several options called Unlimited at US$2.99, US$5.99, US$9.99, US$19.99 and US$29.99, plus a Streak Restore at US$0.99. The listing doesn't say which price is weekly, monthly or yearly, and the offer you see in the app can depend on when and where you sign up, so check the price on the paywall screen before you start a trial.

Prices on Google Play and in other countries are shown in local currency inside the store, so they won't match the US figures exactly.

How to cancel a Cal AI free trial or subscription

Cal AI's FAQ says you can't cancel from inside the app. It goes through your phone's store account.

  1. iPhone: open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, choose CalAI, then Cancel Subscription.
  2. Android: open Google Play, tap your profile icon, then Payments and subscriptions, and cancel Cal AI there.
  3. Cancel at least a day before the trial ends, and check the renewal date shown in the store.
  4. If you change phones or Apple ID and lose access, Cal AI says to use Restore Purchase while signed in to the account you paid with.

Is Cal AI worth paying for?

It depends on whether photo logging is the habit that keeps you tracking. The App Store shows a rating of about 4.8 from more than 372,000 ratings, so a lot of people think so. Reviews also mention odd results now and then, with users saying a retaken photo usually fixes it, which is why I'd treat any photo-based count as an estimate rather than a measurement.

The app was first released on the App Store in April 2024 and is rated 4+ in the Health and Fitness category, so anyone can download it. Cal AI also says in its listing that it doesn't offer medical advice, and that you should speak to a professional before trying a new calorie and nutrient plan. If you've got a health condition, do that first.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Free ways to track calories instead

If you don't want a subscription, the honest alternative is manual logging. It's slower than snapping a photo, but plenty of calorie trackers let you search foods and scan barcodes without paying. I've compared the options in my guide to the best calorie counter app, and there's a round-up of MyFitnessPal alternatives if you've used that before.

My verdict: is Cal AI free?

No, not for what most people download it for. The app is free to install, but its own listing says the food scanning results need a subscription, and logging opens a paywall. Start the free trial only if you're ready to test it fully for a few days, set a reminder to cancel, and decide on the paywall price you're shown rather than any figure you've read online. If you'd rather not pay at all, a manual tracker does the same counting with a bit more typing. My comparison of Lose It vs MyFitnessPal covers two of the best known.
