As of Nov 2026 Facebook Help says you can have up to 6,000 friends on Facebook. If you or the person you want to add has reached that limit, Facebook's options are to turn on pro mode, unfriend someone and send a new request, or follow them instead.
If you've seen a lower number quoted somewhere, go by Facebook's own Help page. When I checked on 1 Nov 2026, it said 6,000. It also lists the limit as just one of seven reasons the Add Friend button might not work for you, which is the more useful thing to know if you're stuck.
The 6,000 limit works in both directions
Facebook's wording is that you or the person you want to add has reached the friend limit. So it isn't only about your own count. If they're at 6,000, you can't add them either, even if you've got plenty of room.
There's a second catch in the small print. Facebook says you won't be able to accept a friend request from someone who has 6,000 friends. So a request from someone at the limit isn't one you can say yes to, however much you want to connect.
Three ways to connect when someone's at the limit
Facebook gives three options, in this order:
- Turn on pro mode. Facebook says this lets you connect with more than 6,000 friends. It's the only route on the page that takes you past the limit rather than working around it.
- Unfriend someone else, then send a new friend request. This frees a slot. If your count is the problem, it works, but it's one out for one in. My guide to unfriending someone on Facebook shows where the button is.
- Follow them instead, if they have following turned on. You won't be friends, but Facebook says you'll still see their public posts. For keeping up with someone, that's often all you need.
Notice the condition on the third one. Following only works if the other person has it enabled. If they don't, you're back to the first two options, and those depend on whose count is full.
Six other reasons you can't add someone
The limit is one reason out of seven. Before you assume you've hit it, check the others. Here's the full list from Facebook Help, with what Facebook says to do:
| Why you can't add them | What Facebook says to do |
|---|---|
| You or they have reached the friend limit | Turn on pro mode, unfriend someone and send a new request, or follow them instead |
| They haven't accepted your request yet, or you're already friends | Wait for them to accept, or check you aren't already connected |
| You've already sent them a friend request | Check whether the requests you've sent are still pending |
| One of you only gets requests from friends of friends | Ask them to send you a request instead, or change your privacy settings |
| The friend request was deleted | Send them a new request, or ask them to send you one |
| You've blocked them | Unblock them first, then send the request |
| You've been blocked from sending friend requests | Find out why you've been blocked from sending requests |
How to work out which one you've hit
Facebook doesn't tell you which reason applies, so it's a process of elimination. I'd go through it in this order, because the quick checks come first:
- Check whether you're already friends, or whether a request is already waiting. A pending request you've forgotten about is an easy one to miss. My page on seeing the friend requests you've sent shows you where to look.
- Check your own friend count. If you're near 6,000, the limit is the likely answer and the three options above apply.
- Ask the other person to send you a request. That gets around the friends of friends setting on their side, and it tells you quickly whether their count is full.
- Check your block list. If you blocked them at some point, you'll need to unblock them before a request can go through.
- If none of that fits, look at whether Facebook has blocked you from sending friend requests, and read why.
One honest gap: the Help page doesn't explain what else happens to a profile at the limit beyond the points above. It covers adding and accepting friends, and that's all.
Pro mode, in one paragraph
Pro mode is the official way past 6,000. Facebook Help names it as the option that lets you connect with more than 6,000 friends. The friend limit page doesn't give the steps to turn it on and doesn't explain what else changes on your profile when you do, so I won't guess at either here. If you've tried it and want to go back, my page on turning off Facebook professional mode covers the reverse.

What I'd do if you run a business from your profile
If your personal profile is close to 6,000 because customers, clients and contacts keep adding you, I'd look at pro mode first, since it's the one route Facebook gives for going past the limit. I'd also make sure following is turned on, so anyone who can't add you can still see your public posts. Skip mass unfriending to make room: it's one in for one out, and you'll be back at the same wall soon. And if a friend request just won't go through, run the checks above before blaming the limit.
If you're running a business from a personal Facebook profile and it's getting crowded, that's the kind of set-up I help sort out. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
