Facebook dynamic creative is an ad setting that takes several creative pieces you upload, such as images, videos, headlines and call-to-action buttons, and combines them automatically into different ad variations for your audience. Meta then shows the combinations it expects to work best for each placement and person. You switch it on at the ad set level in Meta Ads Manager.
The limit to know before you plan around it: Meta says that since June 2024 you may no longer be able to use dynamic creative when creating ad sets with the sales or app promotion objective. Existing campaigns weren't affected, but for new ones Meta recommends the flexible ad format to get a similar result.
What you can upload
| Element | Meta's limit |
|---|---|
| Images and videos (single image or video format) | Up to 10 |
| Carousel format | Images only |
| Headline options | Up to 5 |
| Call-to-action buttons | Up to 5 |
| Ads using dynamic creative | A maximum of 1,000, then you delete or archive some |
How to set up dynamic creative
- In Ads Manager, select + Create, choose your objective and select Continue.
- At the ad set level, find the Dynamic creative section and toggle it on.
- At the ad level, in Ad setup, choose Single image or video or Carousel. If you don't see them, select More options.
- Add your images or videos, or use Create video to turn images into a video.
- Add headline and description options, your website URL and up to 5 call-to-action buttons.
- Check Ad preview, and use Advanced preview to see placements, then publish.
The catch with placements
When dynamic creative is on, you can't select WhatsApp Status as a placement. Meta's fix is to turn dynamic creative off, which resets placements to Advantage+ placements, and those include WhatsApp Status automatically. If WhatsApp Status matters to you, that alone may decide it.
What changes when you also optimise creative per person
By default, dynamic creative only mixes the elements you give it. If you also switch on Optimize creative for each person in the Ad creative section, Meta may make extra changes, including:
- Enhancing or cropping your images and videos.
- Applying a Stories template, or building a Stories carousel from one image, headline or catalog.
- Swapping text between fields, such as primary text and headline.
- Creating videos from images, or showing carousel cards as a video.
- Changing playback speed for silent videos, or adding matching songs.
- Expanding an image by filling the background with matching colours or patterns.
Meta notes that some of these are minor and you won't be able to preview them. If you need tight brand control, check which enhancements are switched on before you publish.
Why it isn't a split test
Meta is clear on this: dynamic creative reports results as the combined performance of all variations, so it isn't recommended as a substitute for split testing. It's good at finding a strong mix when you're unsure which images or headlines suit different audiences. It won't tell you cleanly that headline B beat headline A.
Dynamic creative vs flexible ad format
| Dynamic creative | Flexible ad format | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you turn it on | Ad set level | Ad setup, at the ad level |
| What it varies | Combinations of your images, headlines and buttons | The format itself, such as single image, video or carousel |
| Media limit | Up to 10 images or videos | Up to 10 images and videos |
| Objectives | No longer available for new sales or app promotion ad sets | Traffic, engagement, sales and app promotion |
Flexible may need a specific conversion location: Website for traffic; Website or Message destinations for engagement; Website, App or Message destinations for sales. It also lets you group media with different text combinations, which Meta says helps prevent ad fatigue.
Whichever you use, the inputs decide the results. My Meta ads prompt pack helps you write several distinct headlines quickly, and my guide to standard Facebook ad sizes keeps your images usable across placements.
Reading the results
Ads Manager shows aggregate results for all your combinations, so use them to guide your next round of audience and media choices rather than to crown a single winner. Meta also suggests looking at the comments people leave on the different combinations, which can tell you which message landed. If you want to bulk edit catalog ads, the import and export feature in Ads Manager handles that.

My verdict
Use dynamic creative for awareness, traffic, engagement or leads when you've got several decent images and headlines and want Meta to find the mix. For sales campaigns, go straight to the flexible format. And if you need to know which single headline wins, run a separate A/B test instead, because dynamic creative won't give you that answer.
