Is Traveloka Legit? Refunds, Changes and Fake Bookings (2026)

Yes, Traveloka is a real travel booking platform, founded in Indonesia in 2012 and used for flights, hotels and activities across several Asia-Pacific countries. Expedia became a minority investor in 2017. The catch is that refunds depend on the airline or hotel's own rules, so check your booking terms before you pay.

If you're planning a trip to Southeast Asia, Traveloka comes up constantly, and it's reasonable to wonder whether an app you may never have heard of is safe to hand your card to. I've gone through Traveloka's own about and help pages and the Wikipedia record to see how it works, who's behind it and where bookings can go wrong.

Who owns Traveloka and where it started

Traveloka's about page says it was founded in Indonesia in 2012. Wikipedia fills in the detail: it was founded in Jakarta by Ferry Unardi, Albert and Derianto Kusuma, launched as a metasearch site later in 2012 and became a full online travel agency in 2013. Wikipedia lists its headquarters as Singapore, with operations in Jakarta.

It also has recognisable backers. Wikipedia says Expedia became a minority investor as part of a funding round in 2017 that also included Global Founders Capital, GIC and the Qatar Investment Authority. Investors don't guarantee how a company treats customers, but it does show a business with institutional money behind it rather than an anonymous booking site.

What Traveloka sells and where

Traveloka's about page lists flights, hotels, activities, travel insurance and eSIM among its products, and says it operates in nine countries: Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam. It's a platform that books travel for you, rather than an airline or a hotel itself.

That distinction matters when something changes. You're dealing with Traveloka for the booking and the airline or property for the service, and the two don't always agree about who handles what. Keep every confirmation, voucher and message until your trip is over.

How flight refunds work on Traveloka

The help centre says that for flight refunds you choose a reason, and the available reasons, required documents, refund amount and refund duration may vary depending on the airline's policy for your booking. In other words, Traveloka passes through the airline's rules rather than overriding them.

  • A personal reason usually doesn't need an extra document.
  • Sickness needs a supporting document, such as a medical letter.
  • If the airline cancels or reschedules, you need proof such as a screenshot of the airline's notification.
  • For a double booking, you need the booking ID of the one you want refunded.

If an airline has cancelled on you, your rights may go beyond a refund request. My guide to the deadline for a flight cancellation compensation claim explains how time limits can work, though what applies to you depends on the route and the rules where you fly.

Hotel bookings, e-vouchers and rescheduling

For hotels, Traveloka's help pages say to find out whether a booking is refundable, you should refer to the policy on your e-voucher. Refunds go back by the payment method you used, and for credit card and bank transfers you can expect the money within 2 to 5 working days, according to the help page.

If you want to move your dates, the help page says to tap Info and read the terms to check that rescheduling is available, and that it may incur some fees. For a Pay at Hotel or non-refundable room, you cancel the current booking and make a new one instead. So the cheaper non-refundable rate can cost you flexibility, and I'd read that label before I paid.

The catches to watch for with Traveloka

  • Refund rules vary by airline and by hotel rate, so there isn't one rule for every booking.
  • Rescheduling can carry fees, and a new, pricier booking means paying the difference.
  • Some documents are needed to prove why you're cancelling.
  • Pay at Hotel and non-refundable rooms follow different steps from refundable ones.

I haven't seen a reputable regulator action against Traveloka while researching this, and I'm not claiming one exists. That isn't a clean bill of health, just an absence of something I could verify. For individual complaints, check your card issuer's dispute process and the consumer body in the country where you booked.

Fake Traveloka listings, emails and support

Travel brands are copied by scammers all the time. Common tricks are lookalike websites, messages claiming your booking has a problem and 'support' contacts posted in comments. Book inside the official website or app, type the address yourself and use the help centre in your account for support.

  • Never pay for a Traveloka booking by bank transfer to a personal account.
  • Don't share one-time codes or your login with anyone claiming to be support.
  • Be suspicious of urgent messages asking you to re-enter card details through a link.
  • Check that a voucher matches the booking in your own account.

Spotting dodgy reviews helps too when you're deciding where to book, and my piece on how to spot a fake review has the warning signs I'd look for.

What I checkedWhat Traveloka's own pages say
Founded?In Indonesia in 2012
Where does it operate?Nine countries, from Australia to Vietnam
Flight refunds?Reasons, documents, amount and timing vary by airline policy
Hotel refunds?Check the policy on your e-voucher; card and bank refunds take 2 to 5 working days
Airline cancels?Provide proof such as a screenshot of the airline's notice

My verdict on Traveloka

It's a real, established booking platform with named founders, institutional investors and a help centre that explains its refund steps, so it isn't a scam. The sensible approach is to treat it as a middleman: read the refund rules attached to your exact flight or room before paying, keep your documents and book only through the official app or site.
