When Facebook Dating isn't working, it's usually an eligibility or location rule rather than a bug. As of October 2026, Facebook Help says Dating only works in the Facebook app for Android or iPhone, needs you to be 18 or over with an account in good standing that's at least 30 days old, and won't make new matches while your Dating location doesn't match your primary location.
Those rules explain most cases of Dating vanishing or matches drying up. A few are less obvious: a VPN can cause the location mismatch, deleting your Dating profile stops you making a new one for seven days, and one of Dating's location features is only available to some people.
The eligibility checks Facebook applies
| Check | What Facebook Help says | If this is the problem |
|---|---|---|
| Device | Dating is available from the Facebook app for Android or iPhone | It won't show on a computer, so open the app on your phone |
| Your age | You must be at least 18 | Dating stays unavailable |
| Account age | Your account must be at least 30 days old | A brand-new account has to wait |
| Good standing | Access can be restricted if you went against the Terms of Service, Community Standards or other policies | Dating can disappear even if you've used it before |
| Activity | New or inactive accounts may be restricted | An account you rarely use can lose access |
| Country | You must live in a country where Dating is available | It won't appear outside those countries |
| Recent deletion | You can't make a new profile for seven days after deleting one | You'll need to wait out the seven days |
Facebook Help says Dating is available in many countries for adults with active accounts, and keeps a list of the countries where it's offered. That list includes places such as Puerto Rico, the United States Virgin Islands and the United States Minor Outlying Islands. Availability can change, so check Facebook Help's Who can use Facebook Dating page for your own country.
If Dating was there and has gone, Facebook says it may restrict which accounts can access it, and the reasons it gives are age, a new or inactive account, or going against its policies. If you've never set up a profile, my walkthrough on how to set up Facebook Dating covers that side.
Location mismatch: why new matches stop
This is the one that confuses people most. Dating suggests matches based on your distance preferences. Facebook Help says that if your Dating location doesn't match your primary location, it may ask you to update your Dating location. Until the two match, you can keep messaging existing matches, but you can't make new ones.
Two details explain why it happens. First, your primary Dating location is where you first signed up for Dating, and it only changes when you choose to change it. Moving doesn't update it, which can trigger the mismatch message. Second, if you've recently travelled, Facebook says your primary location should update automatically as you use Facebook, but it may take some time.
Facebook Help also warns that using a VPN may cause your Dating and primary locations to mismatch. If you browse through one, that's the first thing I'd switch off before blaming the app.
How to update your Dating location
As of October 2026, Facebook Help gives this route to check or change it:
- From the Facebook app, tap Menu in the top left, then tap Dating.
- Tap Profile in the top right.
- Tap Dating preferences, then tap Dating location.
- Tap Update to update your location.
Location Services matters here. Facebook Help says you won't be able to see or match with people unless Location Services can confirm your primary Dating location, so turn it on when you create your profile or when Facebook asks. Once the profile exists, you can turn location services off and keep using Dating, with matches based on your most recently confirmed Dating location. Facebook points out that switching location services off affects your wider Facebook experience too, such as check-ins, events and ads.
If you can't get the two locations to match, or you're not comfortable turning location services on, Facebook's own suggestion is to delete your Dating profile.
Match Anywhere has its own limits
Match Anywhere lets you browse suggested matches outside your primary Dating location by adding up to two more Dating locations. Facebook Help says you can change each location once per week, and that these extra locations don't use location services. You can also control whether daters who added your primary location as one of their extra locations can see and potentially match with you.
The catch: Facebook Help says the feature is only available to some people at the moment, and newly created Dating profiles can't use it. So if you can't find the option, that's the likely reason rather than a fault. Where you do have it, Facebook Help's route is Profile in the top right, then Dating preferences, Dating location and Add locations.
The seven-day lock after deleting your profile
Deleting your Dating profile and starting again sounds like a clean reset. Facebook Help says you can't create a new profile for seven days after deleting one. Deleting also removes your Dating profile, answers, likes, matches and conversations, though deleted conversations stay in the other person's inbox.

You can delete your Dating profile without deleting your Facebook account, but deleting your Facebook account deletes your Dating profile too. If you're thinking about stepping away rather than starting over, see how to turn off Facebook Dating.
When it's a glitch, not a rule
If you meet every rule and Dating still won't load, Facebook Help's general troubleshooting for the app is short:
- Update the Facebook app, connecting to Wi-Fi first if the download struggles.
- Make sure you're on a reliable data or Wi-Fi network.
- Close the app and reopen it.
- Restart your device.
- Clear your cache.
Facebook Help adds that something may not load because a feature isn't available to everyone yet, or because you've been blocked from doing something. If it's still broken after that, it could be a bug: on iPhone or Android, shake your phone and follow the on-screen instructions to report it. For error messages that keep coming back, see why Facebook keeps saying something went wrong.
My take
Work through it in order: phone app, your age, account age, standing, country, then location. My advice: if matches have dried up but your existing chats still work, it's almost certainly the location mismatch, so turn off any VPN and update your Dating location before anything else. And don't delete your profile as a quick fix unless you're happy to wait seven days and lose your matches and conversations.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I see Facebook Dating?
Facebook Help says you need the Android or iPhone app, to be at least 18, an account in good standing that's at least 30 days old, and to live in a country where Dating is available. New or inactive accounts may also be restricted.
Is Facebook Dating available on a computer?
No. Facebook Help says Dating is available from the Facebook app for Android or iPhone.
Why does Facebook Dating say my location doesn't match?
Your Dating location differs from your primary location. Your primary Dating location is where you first signed up and only changes when you update it, so moving can trigger the message.
Does a VPN affect Facebook Dating?
It can. Facebook Help says using a VPN may cause your Dating and primary locations to mismatch, which stops new matches until they line up again.
How long must I wait to make a new Dating profile after deleting one?
Seven days. Facebook Help says you can't create a new Dating profile for seven days after deleting one.
What if none of this fixes it?
Update the app, check your connection, restart your device and clear your cache. If it's still broken, Facebook Help says you can report a bug by shaking your phone and following the on-screen instructions.
