DoorDash Taxes: Your 1099-NEC, Tips, Mileage and What You Owe

DoorDash doesn't take tax out of your pay, because Dashers are independent contractors, so you report your earnings and pay any tax yourself. If you earned 600 dollars or more in the calendar year, DoorDash sends you a 1099-NEC in the Dasher app by January 31, and it now emails your tip total separately.

Dashing is easy to start and easy to forget about until tax season. Then the questions arrive all at once: where's my form, why doesn't it match my bank, do I pay tax on tips, and what about all those miles? Here's what DoorDash's own guide says, plus one change on the horizon that most Dasher guides haven't caught yet.

How to find your 1099-NEC in the Dasher app

  1. Update the Dasher app to the newest version.
  2. Open the Earnings tab and tap View payout details.
  3. Tap Tax documents and pick the year from the dropdown (2024 is the earliest).
  4. Use the share icon to save, export or print the PDF.

Check your address in the app by December 31. If you opted out of electronic delivery, the paper form is postmarked by January 31, and DoorDash warns mail can take up to 10 business days. If your account was deactivated or the form won't load, DoorDash Support is the route.

Why your 1099 won't match your deposits exactly

DoorDash calculates the total by the date earnings were deposited, not the date you did the dash, so a late December dash paid in January lands in the following year's total. Reimbursements, such as when you paid for an order with your own cash, aren't included because they aren't taxable.

Tips and the new tips deduction

This is new. Because of the federal No Tax on Tips change, DoorDash reports your tip income separately from the 1099 and emails your tip total by January 31. You'll need that figure if you qualify for the tips deduction, so don't delete the email. DoorDash itself doesn't give tax advice on whether you qualify, so check with a tax professional.

Mileage: your biggest deduction

DoorDash sends a mileage estimate by email by January 31 to Dashers who delivered by car and had on-delivery miles. It points Dashers to the IRS standard mileage rates for working out a deduction. The catch is that its estimate covers on-delivery miles; your own log is better evidence of business driving, so keep one through the year.

The threshold is changing

DoorDash's help page lists 600 dollars as the point where Dashers get a 1099-NEC. The IRS instructions for Form 1099-NEC, for payments made in 2026, set the filing point at 2,000 dollars. So depending on how DoorDash applies the new rule, Dashers who earn between those figures in 2026 may not get a form at all. That doesn't change your tax: the IRS says you must report income whether or not a form arrives.

Puerto Rico Dashers

If you live and work in Puerto Rico, you get Form 480.6SP from Hacienda instead of the federal 1099-NEC, available through the SURI portal, and it's reported on your Puerto Rico return.

A simple year-round routine

  1. Put a share of every payout aside for tax in a separate account.
  2. Keep a mileage log or use an app that records business miles.
  3. Save receipts for things you buy for dashing, like an insulated bag or phone mount.
  4. Download your monthly earnings statements from the Dasher app.
  5. In January, collect your 1099-NEC, tips email and mileage email before you file.

Fixing a wrong name, tax ID or address

DoorDash says that after January 31 you need to contact Support to correct your name or taxpayer ID (SSN or EIN) on the 1099, or to report a move to a different state. If you moved within the same state, it won't adjust the tax form, so just update the address in the app. The fix routes differ slightly by phone: on iOS it's the Account tab, then Profile and Edit profile details; on Android it's Account Details, then Edit Account Details.

What DoorDash reports to whom

DoorDash says it sends the information on your Form 1099 to the IRS and to the relevant state tax authorities. So your state can see the same figure the IRS sees. If the total looks wrong, sort it out with DoorDash before you file, not after. And remember DoorDash doesn't break your earnings down between base pay, tips and promotions on the form, so your own monthly statements in the app are useful backup.

My verdict

DoorDash taxes aren't complicated, but they're all on you. The two habits that save the most money are a mileage log and money set aside from every payout. If you're comparing gig apps, see how much DoorDash pays and how much Uber Eats pays, and for the bigger picture, my tips for freelancers.
