Twitch pays Indian streamers in US dollars once they reach Affiliate or Partner, and I found no Twitch page listing India as unsupported. India is on the IRS tax treaty list with a royalty rate of 15, and conversion into rupees carries a fee.
Indian streamers have a lot of options for earning online, so when someone in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi or Hyderabad asks whether Twitch is worth the late nights, I like to start with the paperwork nobody mentions. India is one of only a few countries in this series with a US tax treaty, and its rate is not the same as the others. I'll cover that first, then the payout mechanics.
India's treaty rate is the detail that sets it apart
Twitch collects tax information during payout onboarding. For people outside the United States, the IRS publishes a list of countries that have an income tax treaty with the US, and India is on it, with the treaty effective from 1991.
The IRS table of treaty rates has columns for royalties. For India they read 15 for know-how, patents, film and TV and copyrights, and 10 for industrial equipment. A footnote adds that the rate also covers fees for included services. Compare that with South Africa, where the same columns read zero, and Bangladesh, where they read 10.
Now the caution. I couldn't confirm how Twitch classifies streaming income, so I can't tell you that 15 is the number that will apply to your earnings. It might not be. What the table gives you is a starting point for a conversation with a chartered accountant in India, who can tell you how the rate interacts with reporting and any credit for tax paid abroad.
Rupees, paise and where Twitch fits
The Indian rupee is issued by the Reserve Bank of India and divided into 100 paise. Twitch pays in US dollars, and the non-US eCheck or local bank option converts into your local currency at the wholesale exchange rate, for a fee. The amount in your Indian bank account is therefore the dollar payout, less Twitch's charges, converted, then less whatever your bank adds.
India sits outside the US and outside the Eurozone. Twitch's Payout Details FAQ limits ACH direct deposit to US residents and SEPA transfer to Eurozone residents, so those two aren't open to you. What remains is eCheck or local bank, PayPal, check and wire, subject to what your account's payout screen offers. I found no Twitch page that lists India as unsupported or names it for a specific method.
How much it costs to move small amounts
- Most methods need a balance of 50 US dollars, and wires need 100 US dollars.
- The wire fee for creators outside the US is 16.00 US dollars.
- A currency exchange fee of 2.50% of the transaction sits outside that fee schedule.
- Twitch's payment processor charges every time you're paid, and for rejected payouts caused by wrong details.
For a beginner with a modest balance, those fixed charges matter more than anything else on the page. If you must choose, avoid the wire until your balance is well above the 100 US dollar minimum.
Questions to take to your accountant
- Does the treaty apply to Twitch Bits and subscription income, and under which income type?
- How should the dollar payout be reported in India, and on what date's exchange rate?
- If tax is withheld in the United States, can it be set against Indian tax?
- Do I need to register for anything in India once streaming turns into regular income?
I can't answer those for you, and nobody should from a blog post. But walking in with the questions written down makes the appointment shorter and cheaper, and it means the tax interview you fill in for Twitch matches what your accountant later files.
Was India in Twitch's 2022 minimum payout rollout?
In 2022 Twitch lowered its minimum from 100 US dollars to 50 US dollars, bringing it in country by country. The names I could find were Argentina, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain and Taiwan, then Australia, Chile, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Peru. India wasn't among them. Check the minimum shown on your own payout screen.

Reaching Affiliate from an Indian time zone
Twitch's Affiliate rules ask for 50 followers, 8 hours streamed, 7 different days and an average of 3 viewers inside 30 days. Indian streamers often live-stream late in the evening India time, which can overlap with audiences in the Gulf and Europe. Whether that helps depends on your content, but it's worth watching your viewer numbers by hour.
After you qualify, Bits pay 1 cent each and subscriptions share 50/50 after taxes and processing fees. Partner Plus offers 60/40 and 70/30 shares, open to Affiliates as well.
A different way to size up your Indian audience
If your streams are clips of the same material you post elsewhere, my pages on what a modest Instagram following can earn in India and how Instagram pays per view in India show how another platform treats Indian creators. And for how this compares with a neighbour, see Twitch payouts in Pakistan, where the treaty reads very differently.
Frequently asked questions
Does Twitch pay streamers in India?
Twitch pays Affiliates and Partners in US dollars, and I found no Twitch page that lists India as unsupported. There's no published country list, so your payout settings are the final check.
Does India have a tax treaty with the US?
Yes. India is on the IRS list of US tax treaties, effective from 1991, and the IRS royalty columns show 15 for several income types. How that applies to Twitch income is for a tax adviser to confirm.
Can I receive Twitch earnings in rupees?
Twitch pays in US dollars. The eCheck or local bank option converts into rupees at the wholesale exchange rate for a fee, and your bank may add its own.
What payout methods are closed to Indian streamers?
ACH direct deposit is for US residents only and SEPA transfer is for Eurozone residents only, so neither applies in India.
What is the Twitch wire fee for India?
Twitch lists 16.00 US dollars for creators outside the US and a minimum of 100 US dollars, plus a currency exchange fee of 2.50%.
