Co-Op Horror Games to Play With Friends (2026)

Co op horror games let you and a few friends face something scary together, so the fear gets shared and half the fun is the screaming over voice chat. Phasmophobia, Lethal Company, Dead by Daylight and Devour are popular group picks on PC, Doors and Project Playtime are free to try, and Luigi's Mansion 3 is a gentle start if you scare easily.

Most of these are paid games on PC, so check each store page for the platform, the player count and the current terms before you invite everyone. The free picks are further down. First, a quick table so you can compare them.

Scare levels are my own rough guide. What frightens one friend barely bothers another, so treat the column as a starting point.

Jump scares with friends

These are the games people talk about when they say they screamed so loudly the neighbours heard.

Phasmophobia

You and your team investigate haunted houses with ghost-hunting gear, then work out what kind of ghost you're dealing with. The game can react to what you say out loud, which is a big part of the fear. It supports VR. Best for: groups who like tension more than action. Main limit: it asks for patience, and a nervous player may spend a whole round hiding in the van.

Lethal Company

You're a crew sent to abandoned moons to collect scrap and get out alive before the creatures find you. Nearby voice chat means you only hear a teammate when they're close, which makes losing someone in the dark a nasty moment. It's funny as well as scary. Best for: groups who laugh when they panic. Main limit: it's PC only and can be rough on a slow laptop.

Dead by Daylight

Survivors fix generators and try to escape while one killer hunts them. If you want to hide, work together and be chased, this is it. It has horror characters from well-known films alongside its own. Best for: friends who like a match with a clear goal. Main limit: the killer role has a learning curve, and the first few games can feel confusing.

Devour

You and up to three friends complete ritual tasks inside a creepy setting while something possessed hunts you. Everyone has a job, and one frightened player can sink the whole team. Best for: small groups who want a mission to focus on. Main limit: it's best with a full group, so it's less fun solo.

Puzzle horror for two

Not every scary night needs a chase. Some of the best pairs are slow, eerie and built on talking.

We Were Here puts two players in separate spots, each holding half the puzzle. You can't see each other's room, so you describe things over voice chat and guide your partner through. It's tense rather than jumpy. The first game is free to play, and the later ones are paid. The Dark Pictures Anthology is another one to look at. It's a story-choice horror series on consoles and PC, and some entries offer shared play, so check the current co-op options on the store page.

If you'd rather read about why puzzle-heavy horror holds attention, I wrote about it in my article on horror puzzle games and why they stay popular.

Free picks

You don't have to buy anything to try co op horror games with friends. These three are free to start:

  • Doors is a Roblox game where players move through a series of rooms, solving small puzzles and avoiding the things that appear. Roblox has its own parental controls, so use them if younger players are joining.
  • Project Playtime puts a team of players against a monster in a toy factory. It's free on PC, and you work together to complete tasks and stay alive.
  • Dead by Daylight on phone is a free download with optional purchases, so you can try the match format without paying for the PC version.

If you want a scary game alone on your phone instead, I rounded up some in free offline horror games for Android. And if your laptop isn't strong, free multiplayer games that run on almost any laptop is a good place to look for lighter options.

For horror beginners

If you scare easily but your friends are keen, don't start with the loudest game on the list. Try this order instead:

  1. Luigi's Mansion 3. It's spooky but cartoonish. The ghosts are funny, and few people will lose sleep over it.
  2. Left 4 Dead 2. It's action first, with zombies you can shoot. The fear comes from being outnumbered, not from being alone in the dark.
  3. Lethal Company. It's tense, but the jokes break the tension. Good for groups who need a laugh between scares.
  4. Phasmophobia or Devour. Save these for when everyone's comfortable, because they're scarier by design.

Agree before you start that anyone can pause or leave without teasing. It sounds small, but it makes the whole night better.

How to set up a horror game night

Good atmosphere does half the work. Here's what I'd set up first:

  • Headphones for everyone. Sound is where most of the fear lives. Speakers kill it.
  • Voice chat that works. Use the game's built-in voice or a group call, and test it before you start. A friend who can't hear the team will feel left out.
  • Dim lights, snacks nearby. You'll want both hands free once it gets tense.
  • Everyone on the same version. Updates can stop friends from joining, so install them early.
  • A break halfway. Ten minutes to laugh and reset keeps the night from turning into a blur.

An age note

Many of these games are rated for older teens and adults because of violence and frightening scenes. Check the rating on the store page before younger players join, and use the console or platform's parental settings. Roblox games have their own settings, so a child account may need adjusting. Being scared is part of the point for adults, but it shouldn't be a surprise for a child.

Frequently asked questions

Does everyone need their own copy of a co op horror game?

Usually yes, but it depends on the game. Some let a friend join a free version or a shared session, so read the store page for the current rules.

What is a good co op horror game for people who scare easily?

Luigi's Mansion 3 is the gentlest on this list because it's cartoonish. Left 4 Dead 2 is another easy option, since it leans on action more than dread.

Are there free co op horror games?

Yes. Doors on Roblox and Project Playtime are free to start, and Dead by Daylight has a free phone version with optional purchases. The first We Were Here game is free for two players too.

Can I play co op horror games on a console or phone?

Some, yes. Dead by Daylight is on consoles and phones, and Luigi's Mansion 3 is on Switch. Many of the scariest co-op picks, such as Phasmophobia and Lethal Company, are PC only.
