Among Us Offline: Can You Play Without Internet? (2026)

Partly. Among Us has no solo or single-player mode, so you can't play it alone offline. What it does offer, according to Innersloth's Google Play and Steam listings, is local play over the same wifi network, which lets 4 to 15 people in one place play together without joining an online lobby.

Among Us is a party game at heart: crewmates doing tasks, one or more impostors picking them off, and a lot of shouting during the vote. That makes the offline question a bit different from most games. The real question isn't whether you can play it on a plane alone, because you can't. It's whether a group in the same house or classroom can play without the internet.

What the Among Us store listings say

StoreHow it describes playSingle-player listed?Other labels
Google PlayOnline or over local WiFi, 4-15 playersNoContains ads, in-app purchases, Everyone 10+
App StoreOnline, 4-15 playersNoAbout 1.07 GB, rated 9+
SteamOnline and local party game, 4-15 players; LAN PvP and LAN Co-op categoriesNoIn-App Purchases category

Notice the gap. The Android and Steam listings both talk about local or LAN play. The iPhone listing only mentions online play. That doesn't prove local games are missing on iPhone, but it's a good reason to try a local game at home before you promise a room full of children that it'll work.

How a local Among Us game works without internet

Local play uses the wifi network itself rather than the internet. Everyone's phone or computer has to be connected to the same router, and that router doesn't necessarily need a working broadband line behind it. In practice, this is how families play on a holiday where the cottage wifi box is there but the line is down, or in a school hall with its own network.

  1. Update Among Us on every device while you're still online, so everyone is on the same version.
  2. Connect all the devices to the same wifi network.
  3. One person opens the game, chooses the local option and hosts a game.
  4. Everyone else chooses local too, and the hosted game should appear for them to join.
  5. Agree the rules out loud before you start. With everyone in one room, the temptation to shout who the impostor is can ruin the round.

Why you can't play Among Us alone without a connection

None of the three listings shows a single-player or story mode, and Steam doesn't tag the game Single-player. Among Us needs other people to work, because the whole game is reading their behaviour. There are no computer-controlled crewmates to vote against. If you're on your own and offline, you'll need a different game.

Making a local Among Us round work in a busy room

A local game puts everyone within earshot, so it plays differently from an online lobby. Ask players to sit facing away from each other, keep phone screens tilted down, and appoint one grown-up as the person who calls meetings back to order. Short rounds help with younger groups, and a quick reminder that impostors are allowed to lie keeps the tears to a minimum when someone gets voted off.

What still needs the internet in Among Us

  • Joining public lobbies with strangers.
  • Playing with friends who aren't on your wifi network.
  • Anything involving the in-game store, which the listings flag with in-app purchases.
  • Updates. Local players on different versions may not be able to see each other's game.

Among Us offline for families and classrooms

Google Play rates the game Everyone 10+ and the App Store rates it 9+. For younger groups, local play has a real advantage: there are no strangers in the lobby, because everyone in the game is physically in the room. That's a big plus for parents who don't love open chat. Ads appear on the Android version, which carries the Contains ads label, so it's worth deciding beforehand whether children can tap them.

If your group enjoys the bluffing more than the spaceship, my roundup of other social deduction games has board and party games that work with no screens at all.

Troubleshooting a local Among Us game

  • The hosted game doesn't appear. Check everyone is on exactly the same wifi network, not a guest network or a phone hotspot with a different name.
  • One person can't join. Compare versions. Update on a working connection if you can.
  • A school or office network blocks it. Some managed networks stop devices seeing each other. A home router usually doesn't.
  • Not enough players. The listings say 4-15 players, so a game of three won't start.

Other games for a group with no internet

If local Among Us won't cooperate, board game apps for family night are a reliable fallback, and many of them pass one phone around the table. For anything else on your phone, here's how to check whether a game needs the internet before you rely on it.

My take on Among Us without internet

Among Us is brilliant offline only if you've got a crowd and a shared wifi network. It's not an airplane game and it never will be. For a sleepover, a family gathering or a club night, though, a local game is arguably better than online play: no strangers, no lag from distant servers, and the arguments happen face to face. Update everyone first, test one round, and you're set.

Frequently asked questions

Can you play Among Us offline?

Not alone. There's no single-player mode. Groups on the same wifi network can play a local game, which Innersloth describes on its Google Play and Steam listings.

Does Among Us local play need internet?

Local play runs over the shared wifi network rather than the internet, so everyone must be connected to the same router.

How many players does Among Us need?

The listings say 4-15 players, so you'll need at least four people for a game.

Does Among Us work offline on iPhone?

The App Store description only mentions online play, so test a local game on your devices before you depend on it.

Is Among Us suitable for children?

Google Play rates it Everyone 10+ and the App Store rates it 9+. Local games keep strangers out of the lobby.
