To make a YouTube thumbnail with ChatGPT, ask for a 16:9 image, describe one clear focal point and give it no more than a few words of big, bold text in quotes. Upload your own photo if you want your face in it. Then check the text and export at YouTube's recommended size before uploading.
A good thumbnail does one job: makes someone curious enough to click. ChatGPT is surprisingly good at building them, because it can add text, place a subject and set the shape in one go. Where people go wrong is asking for too much. A thumbnail is seen small on a phone, so one face, one object and a handful of words beat a busy collage every time.
Copy a prompt, fill in the [brackets] and add your own photo with the + button if you want to appear in it. Put any text you want in quotes so ChatGPT uses the exact words.

How to get better results with thumbnail prompts
- Always state the shape. YouTube suggests 16:9 for video thumbnails and 9:16 for Shorts, and ChatGPT can follow the ratio in your prompt or the aspect ratio picker.
- Keep text to a few words in quotes, then zoom right out to check it reads at phone size.
- If ChatGPT misspells a word, ask it to fix only the text.
- Use the selection tool for small fixes, but check the edges; OpenAI says edits can spread beyond the selection.
- Before uploading, save it as JPG or PNG. YouTube recommends 3840 x 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640, and caps mobile uploads at 2 MB.
Why simple thumbnails win
It's tempting to cram in everything your video covers. Don't. People decide in a split second, and they're usually looking at a small image on a phone, so you've got room for one idea. If you can't say what the thumbnail's about in three words, it's too busy. That's why every prompt above asks for one face or object, one background colour and a short line of text. You'll get better results, and you'll find it easier to keep a consistent look across your channel, which helps returning viewers spot your videos. If a design isn't working, try changing the background colour first; it's the quickest way to make a thumbnail stand out from the ones around it.
Two YouTube rules that catch people out
First, custom thumbnails need a verified YouTube account, and for Shorts they can only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer. Second, if you upload a vertical video with a 16:9 thumbnail, YouTube replaces it with an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home and explore pages, among others. Your custom one still shows elsewhere, but plan your design so the key element survives a tighter crop.
For design principles beyond the prompt, YouTube thumbnails that get more clicks is a good companion, and where to create AI images for free lists other generators to try.
My verdict
ChatGPT makes strong thumbnails when you keep them simple: one face or object, a few bold words in quotes, the right shape for the format. Treat the first result as a draft, fix the text in a follow-up, and check it at phone size before it goes anywhere near YouTube.
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT make YouTube thumbnails?
Yes. Ask for a 16:9 image, describe one focal point and put a few words of text in quotes.
What size should a ChatGPT YouTube thumbnail be?
Ask for 16:9. YouTube recommends 3840 x 2160 pixels, a minimum width of 640, and JPG or PNG files.
