ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month as of October 2026, according to OpenAI's own pricing page, with prices shown in US dollars. It sits between ChatGPT Go at $8 a month and ChatGPT Pro, which starts from $100 a month. The free plan is still $0 and available to everyone.
Plus is the plan most people mean when they talk about paying for ChatGPT. It's also the one I'd point a small business owner to first, because it adds the features that change day-to-day work, like projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs, without the jump to Pro pricing.

OpenAI says paid plans are priced per user per month. It offers monthly plans for Go, Plus and Business, and annual plans for Business and Enterprise.
What ChatGPT Plus includes
According to OpenAI, Plus includes everything in Go, plus:
- Advanced reasoning models with GPT-6.
- Expanded messages and uploads.
- More complex and accurate image creation.
- Expanded deep research, memory and context.
- Projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs.
- Expanded Codex usage and wider access to ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile.
- Early access to new features.
OpenAI adds that limits apply, so Plus isn't unlimited on every feature. Text chats are listed as unlimited across plans, subject to abuse guardrails.
The Go plan catch most people miss
Here's something worth knowing before you pick the cheaper plan. OpenAI's pricing page says the Go plan may include ads. Plus doesn't carry that note. If you're using ChatGPT for client work and want a cleaner workspace, that alone can be the reason to pick Plus over Go.

When Pro makes sense instead
ChatGPT Pro starts from $100 a month, and OpenAI says you choose from three usage tiers. It adds Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra, longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions, an always-on agent called Dot, unlimited and faster image creation, and maximum deep research, memory and context.
For most small businesses, that's overkill. Pro is for people who run long research or coding sessions every day and keep hitting the Plus limits.
How to upgrade to ChatGPT Plus
- Sign in to ChatGPT on the web or in the app.
- Open the pricing page from your profile menu, or go to chatgpt.com/pricing.
- Choose the Individual tab, then select Get Plus.
- Pay with a major credit card. OpenAI says Go, Plus, Pro and Business can all be bought this way.
- Check the new features appear, then set up your first project so you get value straight away.

Discounts for teams, nonprofits and teachers
OpenAI lists a few routes to pay less. Through OpenAI for Nonprofits, eligible nonprofits can get a discount on ChatGPT Business or Enterprise by contacting sales. Verified US K to 12 teachers can use ChatGPT for Teachers free through June 2027, according to OpenAI. Business plans start at 2 users, so a two-person firm can sit on Business rather than two separate Plus accounts.
Go, Free and Plus are designed for individuals, OpenAI says. If several people share one Plus login, you're outside how the plan is meant to be used, and you lose the admin controls Business adds.
Free vs Go vs Plus: the features that change
OpenAI's comparison table is long, so here are the rows that matter most to a working business owner, as listed on the pricing page in October 2026.

The surprise here is that Go and Plus list the same context windows. So the higher Plus price isn't buying longer memory of a conversation. It's buying full deep research, full Codex access and the better image creation, plus the advanced reasoning models.
There's no annual Plus discount
OpenAI says it offers monthly plans for Go, Plus and Business, and annual plans for Business and Enterprise. In other words, Plus is billed month to month for individuals. That's good news if you only need it for a busy quarter: you can subscribe, get the work done and drop back to Free without being locked in for a year. If two or more of you need it all year, that's when Business, which OpenAI sells from 2 users, is worth pricing up.
My verdict
At $20 a month, ChatGPT Plus is the right plan for most solo business owners who use ChatGPT every working day. It adds projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs, and it avoids the ads note on Go. Stay on Free if you only use it occasionally, and don't jump to Pro unless you keep hitting Plus limits on long research or coding work.
