ChatGPT Pet Portrait Prompts: Turn Your Dog or Cat Into Art

To make a pet portrait in ChatGPT, upload a clear photo of your dog or cat and ask for the style you want, such as an oil painting or watercolour, while keeping your pet's markings, eye colour and ear shape exactly the same. Image creation and editing work on every ChatGPT plan. Ask for one change at a time until it looks like your pet.

A pet portrait only works if it looks like your pet, not just a dog of the same breed. That's the part AI gets wrong when the prompt is vague. The prompts below all start by telling ChatGPT what must stay the same, then what style to add.

The line that keeps it looking like your pet

Copy this prompt

Use my uploaded photo. Keep my pet's exact markings, fur colours, eye colour, ear shape and face shape. Don't change the breed or add markings that aren't there.

Add that to the start of every portrait prompt below. If you skip it, ChatGPT tends to tidy up your pet into a 'perfect' version of the breed, and the scruffy ear or odd patch you love disappears.

Pick the right photo first

  • Daylight, no flash, so the fur colours are true.
  • Your pet's face sharp and roughly facing the camera.
  • Eyes visible, ideally with a little light in them.
  • Nothing covering the face, such as a toy or a hand.

One good photo beats five blurry ones. ChatGPT can also take a sketch on the phone app (type @ and choose Sketch) if you want to suggest a pose.

Classic painted portraits

Oil painting

Copy this prompt

Use my uploaded photo. Keep my pet's exact markings, fur colours, eye colour and face shape. Turn it into a classic oil painting portrait, rich brushstrokes, dark warm background, soft light from the left, head and shoulders, portrait shape.

Watercolour

Copy this prompt

Use my uploaded photo. Keep my pet's exact markings and face. Turn it into a loose watercolour portrait on white paper, soft edges, gentle colour washes, a few paint splashes around the edges.

Charcoal sketch

Copy this prompt

Use my uploaded photo. Keep my pet's exact face shape and markings as tones. Create a charcoal drawing portrait on textured off-white paper, expressive lines, no colour.

Fun and playful portraits

Royal portrait

Copy this prompt

Use my uploaded photo. Keep my pet's exact face and markings. Paint my pet as a royal in an old fashioned portrait, wearing a velvet cape and a small crown, sitting on a cushion, ornate gold frame, playful but realistic fur.

Cartoon

Copy this prompt

Use my uploaded photo. Keep my pet's colours and markings recognisable. Turn it into a cute cartoon illustration with bold outlines and bright flat colours, plain background, square.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Use my uploaded photo. Keep my pet's face and markings exactly the same. Show my pet as a superhero with a red cape on a rooftop at sunset, comic book style, heroic pose.

Holiday card

Copy this prompt

Use my uploaded photo. Keep my pet's face and markings exactly the same. Put my pet in a cosy winter scene by a fireplace wearing a knitted scarf, warm light, room at the top for the words "Season's Greetings".

Memorial portraits

If you're making a portrait of a pet who's died, keep it simple and gentle. A soft, recognisable portrait usually means more than a dramatic scene.

Gentle memorial

Use my uploaded photo. Keep my pet's exact face, markings and eye colour. Create a soft, peaceful portrait in warm light with a meadow of flowers in the background, calm and loving mood, no text.

OpenAI says you can pick any aspect ratio with the picker or by writing it in the prompt. For a print, open the finished image, choose Save, and check it's sharp at the size you want before you order.

Which style suits which pet

Your petStyles that tend to work
Strong markings, like a tabby or a spotted dogOil painting or watercolour, where the pattern carries the picture
Fluffy, long furCharcoal or oil, which show texture well
Plain single colour coatCartoon or royal portrait, where the character does the work
Older pet with a grey muzzleSoft watercolour, and ask ChatGPT to keep the grey

These are my own rules of thumb from the way these styles treat fur and colour, not a rule from OpenAI, so try two styles and compare.

Fixing a portrait that doesn't look right

ProblemWhat to type
Wrong markingsPut the white patch back on the left side of the face, exactly as in the photo
Eyes wrong colourMake the eyes the same amber colour as in my photo
Looks like a different dogKeep the face shape and ear shape exactly as in my photo
Too smoothKeep the fur texture scruffy and natural

OpenAI's help page notes that when you use the editor's Select tool, highlights aren't always precise and edits may spread past the area, so describe the fix in words as well.

My advice

Make three versions from the same photo, one painted, one playful, one simple, and see which one makes you smile. That's the one to print. And keep the original photo next to it while you edit; comparing them side by side is the fastest way to spot what's drifted.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT make a portrait from my pet's photo?

Yes. Upload the photo and ask for a style, while telling ChatGPT to keep your pet's markings, eye colour and face shape exactly the same.

Is it free to make pet portraits in ChatGPT?

OpenAI says ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers, including the free plan.

Why doesn't the portrait look like my pet?

The prompt didn't lock the details. Ask ChatGPT to keep the exact markings, ear shape and eye colour, and fix one detail at a time.

What size should I use for a print?

Ask for a portrait shape for frames or square for mugs, and check the saved image is sharp before ordering.
