ChatGPT Finances lets you connect your bank and investment accounts, through Plaid, and your Experian credit report, then ask ChatGPT questions grounded in your own spending, bills, subscriptions, net worth and credit score. It's available in the US to Free, Go, Plus and Pro users on the web, iOS and Android. It can explain and plan, but it can't move funds, pay bills or make trades.
OpenAI expanded Finances to Free and Go users in the US on 2 October 2026. If you've ever exported a bank statement to a spreadsheet and asked an AI where it all went, this is the built-in version, with a dashboard on top.
Here's how it works, how to set it up, the limits OpenAI is upfront about, and how to switch it off again.
What you can ask it
Once your accounts are connected, you can ask in a normal chat or from the Finances page. You can also type /finances or @finances in the chat box.
- Where did I spend the most this month?
- What subscriptions am I paying for?
- What bills are coming up?
- Am I on pace to stay within my grocery budget?
- Are there any duplicate payments?
- Which factors are affecting my credit score?
- How is my portfolio allocated?
OpenAI says that when ChatGPT uses your connected data, it may cite the source data so you can check where an answer came from.
How to connect your accounts
- Open Finances in ChatGPT and select Get started, or type @Finances, connect my accounts in any chat.
- Select Connect with Plaid.
- Sign in and choose the financial institutions you want to connect.
- Return to ChatGPT. Syncing and categorising usually takes a few minutes, and in rare cases several hours.
- Connect your credit report through Experian separately if you want credit insights. The two connections are independent.
The Finances dashboard
| Widget | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Spend by category | Where your spending goes each month |
| Spend this month | This month compared with recent trends |
| Upcoming payments | Expected bills and recurring charges |
| Subscriptions | Active subscriptions, amounts, how often they charge and the next charge date |
| Bills | Recurring household and utility payments |
| Net worth | How your net worth has changed over time |
| Portfolio distribution | Your mix of equities, bonds, ETFs, cash and crypto |
| Credit score | Your Experian score, credit factors and score history |
Widgets only appear when ChatGPT has enough connected data to build them. Select Edit dashboard, the pencil icon, to reorder them or hide the ones you don't want.
What ChatGPT Finances can't do
This is the part I'd want every user to read. OpenAI lists what ChatGPT can't do with your accounts:
| ChatGPT can't | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Move funds or pay bills | It's read-only: you still act in your own banking app |
| Make trades or change retirement contributions | Any investment change is yours to make |
| Open or close accounts, or change account settings | Your accounts stay under your control |
| File your taxes | It can organise information and explain concepts, but it isn't a tax preparer |
| Act as your adviser | OpenAI says it isn't a fiduciary, registered investment adviser, broker-dealer, tax preparer or law firm |
OpenAI's advice is to consult a qualified professional before decisions with legal, tax or investment consequences, and I'd go further: treat its answers as a starting point for a conversation with your accountant, not the conversation itself.
Why the numbers might look wrong
OpenAI is honest that the dashboard isn't perfect. A spending breakdown can look off if transfers, credit card payments, reimbursements or duplicate pending transactions are counted as spending. Some banks share balances but not full transaction history, holdings, loan details or due dates. And credit widgets reflect your latest Experian report, so a recent payment won't show until your lender reports it.
The fix is to ask. You can ask ChatGPT which transactions it included, reclassify anything that looks wrong, and tell it to remember the correction.
Financial memories
You can also give ChatGPT context it can't see in your accounts, like a savings goal, a split rent or a planned purchase. It saves these as financial memories, a separate type of memory used only in finance conversations. You can view or delete them from the Finances page using the more options menu.
Privacy, temporary chats and deleting your data
- Finances follows the same model training setting you choose for the rest of ChatGPT, under Settings, then Data controls
- In a temporary chat, ChatGPT won't access your connected accounts or use or create memories
- To disconnect Plaid, open Settings, then Apps, then Finances, or use the Finances home page
- OpenAI says synced account data is deleted from its systems within 30 days of disconnecting, and the Plaid data for that ChatGPT connection within 30 days under Plaid's policies
- Disconnecting a source doesn't delete earlier conversations; delete those separately

A prompt I'd start with
Subscription clear-out
Look at my last three months of spending.
List every subscription and recurring charge, flag anything that looks like a duplicate, and tell me which three I could cancel with the least disruption.
ChatGPT can connect to your health records too, and I walk through that in my guide to using ChatGPT Health.
My take
For anyone in the US, Finances is a handy way to find forgotten subscriptions and see spending patterns without building a spreadsheet. Go in with your eyes open: it's read-only, it can misread transfers, and it isn't advice. If you're outside the US, or want a dedicated tool, my roundup of the best budgeting apps covers the alternatives, and my guide to ChatGPT memory explains how saved context works across chats. If you'd like help using AI safely in your business admin, that's what I do in my one-to-one AI sessions.
