ChatGPT Business vs Enterprise: Self-Serve or Sales-Led?

Choose ChatGPT Business if your team can sign up with a card and needs a secure shared workspace now. Choose ChatGPT Enterprise if you need invoicing, purchase orders, SCIM, data residency or SLAs. Business seats are $20 a user a month billed annually, while Enterprise has custom pricing through sales, as of October 2026.

For most teams the choice between these two plans comes down to how your company buys software, not what the chat can do. I read OpenAI's ChatGPT Business pricing page and the OpenAI Help Center articles on ChatGPT Business and ChatGPT Enterprise, and the details below come from those, as of October 2026.

Business and Enterprise feature by feature

OpenAI lists Business prices in US dollars for most countries, and notes that pricing may vary by country and currency.

Inside ChatGPT Business

This is the self-serve workspace plan. A Standard seat is $25 per user per month on the monthly plan or $20 per user per month billed annually. A Premium seat is $125 per user per month monthly or $100 billed annually, and gives 5x more usage than Standard with no 5-hour limit.

A Business workspace needs at least 2 seats in total: 2 Standard, 2 Premium, or 1 of each. You get a secure workspace with SAML, SSO and MFA, centralised billing and administration, usage analytics and spend controls, and no training on your business data by default.

Two details from the Help Center are easy to miss. Business is separate from the API platform, so a Business subscription doesn't include API usage, which is billed separately. And the GPT Instant total context window on Business is 54K.

Inside ChatGPT Enterprise

There's no published price for this plan. OpenAI's page says custom pricing, contact sales, and credit-based and token-based pricing are both available. It's bought at the organisation level, so individual users can't sign up for it themselves.

What you get on top is mostly control. Enterprise adds SCIM, EKM, user analytics, domain verification and role-based access controls; custom data retention policies, with encryption at rest and in transit; support for data residency in ten regions; and 24/7 priority support, SLAs, custom legal terms and access to AI advisors for eligible customers. It also offers invoicing and billing with volume discounts, and an expanded context window: GPT Instant goes from 54K on Business to 128K.

The line OpenAI draws for you

Here's what settles it for a lot of companies. OpenAI's Help Center says that if you need invoice billing, purchase orders, bank transfer, wire, ACH, net terms, split payments, Zero Data Retention or BAAs, you should use a contracted offering instead of self-serve Business. So if your finance team won't pay by card, or your legal team needs those terms, Business isn't an option however small the team is.

Which organisations need which plan

  1. A small team that can pay by card and wants a shared, private workspace: Business, with at least 2 seats.
  2. A few heavy users in an otherwise light team: Business, mixing Premium seats for them with Standard for everyone else.
  3. A company whose finance team needs invoices, purchase orders or net terms: Enterprise or another contracted offering.
  4. IT needs SCIM provisioning or encryption keys under your own management: Enterprise.
  5. You must keep data in a particular region: Enterprise, with data residency in ten regions.
  6. Your developers need API access: plan for it separately, because Business doesn't include API usage.

If you're comparing beyond OpenAI, the plans that usually sit on the same shortlist are ChatGPT Plus, Claude Team, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini for Workspace. Check how each one is bought and billed, as well as what it does.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

My advice for your workplace rollout

If you're a small or mid-sized team and you can pay by card, I'd start on Business with Standard seats, add Premium only for the people who hit the limits, and move up when IT or finance asks for something Business can't do. If your company already buys software through purchase orders and legal review, I'd skip straight to a conversation with OpenAI's sales team, because Business can't meet those terms.

If you're rolling ChatGPT out to a team and want people using it well from the first week, this is what I do all day. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
