Canva for Nonprofits: Who Qualifies and How to Apply for Free Canva Pro

Canva for Nonprofits gives registered nonprofits, NGOs and social impact organisations free access to all Canva Pro features, plus team collaboration tools, for one team of up to 50 users. You apply from your Canva account and upload proof of your organisation's registration.

If you run or volunteer for a charity, this is one of the most useful free programmes out there. Canva Pro covers brand kits, premium templates and the tools that make a small team look polished. The part to get right is eligibility, because plenty of organisations that feel like nonprofits don't qualify.

What Canva for Nonprofits includes

  • All Canva Pro premium features, for free.
  • Team and collaboration tools.
  • One team of up to 50 users.
  • Extra seats at a reduced rate on Canva Enterprise if you need more than 50.

Who qualifies and who doesn't

Canva says the programme is for registered nonprofits, NGOs and social impact organisations with clearly stated charitable missions. Your organisation must be officially registered as a charitable nonprofit, like a 501(c)(3) in the US, independent from government and not operating for commercial profit.

The catches people miss

The first is the single team. Canva says all nonprofits can have one team of up to 50 users for free. If you have several branches or departments, you can't each set up your own free team. Plan one shared team with folders for each group.

The second is the type of organisation. Schools go through Canva's education route instead, and grant-making foundations aren't eligible even though they're charitable. If you're a social enterprise that trades for profit, you won't qualify either.

The third is the paperwork. Canva's help centre says missing or unclear documentation is a common reason for rejection, and it suggests using an email that matches your organisation's domain where possible.

How to apply for Canva for Nonprofits

  1. Sign in to Canva, or create a free account if you don't have one.
  2. If you chose Non-profit or charity when you signed up, use the link in the homepage alert, which shows for 30 days.
  3. Otherwise, open Settings and select Upgrade to Canva for Nonprofits.
  4. Choose the right category, such as Registered Nonprofit or Social Impact Organisation.
  5. Upload a document showing your registration, then wait for Canva to verify it.

What to do if you're rejected

Canva's help centre gives clear fixes. If your documents were missing or unclear, reapply with a document type accepted in your country. If you picked the wrong category, reapply under the right one using your organisation's email domain. And if you're a staff member or volunteer and Canva couldn't confirm your link to the charity, reapply with a signed letter of affiliation, a volunteer ID or another document showing your name, role and organisation.

Getting the most out of free Canva Pro

Once you're approved, set up your brand kit first, with your logo, colours and fonts, so every volunteer creates on-brand designs. Then build a small library of templates for the things you make most often, such as event posters, social posts and donation appeals. My Canva tutorial walks through the basics if your team is new to it.

If you don't qualify, there are other official routes worth checking. My guide on how to get Canva Pro for free covers them.

Who should apply

Apply if you're a registered charity or NGO with a small team making social posts, flyers, reports and fundraising materials. It's one of the easiest wins for a nonprofit's marketing.

How long approval takes and what speeds it up

Canva's help centre says verifying your organisation's affiliation can sometimes take longer than usual. The quickest applications have three things in common: the right category picked first time, a document type that's accepted for your country, and an email address on the organisation's own domain. If you're a volunteer applying on behalf of the charity, have a signed letter of affiliation or volunteer ID ready before you start.

Once you're in, add your team members to the single team so everyone works from the same brand kit and template folders.

Canva for Nonprofits vs a standard free Canva account

A standard free Canva account is a fine starting point, but Canva for Nonprofits gives you everything in Canva Pro on top, including the premium features and team collaboration tools, for up to 50 people. If your charity already has a free account, you don't need a new one. Canva's help centre says you can apply at any time from Settings by selecting Upgrade to Canva for Nonprofits.

Before you apply, check that your registration document clearly shows your organisation's name and status, because that's what Canva needs to verify.

My verdict: if you're a registered nonprofit, apply. Canva for Nonprofits gives you full Canva Pro for up to 50 people, and the only real work is getting your documents right the first time.
