A WordPress slider plugin rotates images, video, posts or testimonials in one space on a page, usually near the top. Pick it by what you'll put in the slides and how much control you get over the first one, because a large slider above the fold is often the slowest thing on the page. Ten free plugins follow in no particular order.
Sliders are back on plenty of homepages, and they come with a trade-off the plugin pages rarely spell out: the bigger the slider and the higher it sits, the more it can slow the page down. That doesn't mean skip them. It means picking a plugin for the job you've got, and keeping the first slide light.
The ten below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the plugin's own WordPress.org plugin directory page. If your site already feels slow, my guide on how to speed up your website is worth reading first.
Ten slider and carousel plugins at a glance
All ten are free plugins in the WordPress.org plugin directory, as of Oct 2026, which is why each free plan cell reads Yes. Several makers sell extra features separately, so check the plugin's page before you plan a slider around one.

Why the first slide decides your page speed
web.dev, Google's site for web developers, says sites should aim for a Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) of 2.5 seconds or less for at least 75% of page visits. LCP measures how long it takes for the largest image or block of text on the screen to appear.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Its carousel guidance goes further: large, above-the-fold carousels often contain the page's LCP element, so they can have a significant impact on LCP. In plain terms, a big slider at the top of your homepage is likely to be the thing that's timed. That's why the plugin you pick matters less than what you put in the first slide.
Keeping a slider fast
- Make the first slide a single, well-compressed image rather than a video.
- Size images to the space they fill, not the camera's full resolution.
- Think twice before a full-screen slider at the very top of the page.
- Use only the slides you need, since each one adds more images to load.
- Check your LCP before and after you add the slider, so you know what it changed.
Match the plugin to what's in the slides
- Your latest blog posts: a post slider that pulls them in for you.
- Customer quotes: a testimonial slider with slider and grid layouts.
- Logos, videos or products: a carousel plugin that names those content types.
- A hero section on an Elementor site: an Elementor slider addon.
- The block editor: a block slider that works in the block and classic editors.
- Sliders and popups together: a builder that does both, so you only learn one tool.
Installs, ratings and the tested-up-to line
The directory numbers, as of Oct 2026, are spread wide. Smart Slider 3 has 800,000+ active installs and 98/100 from 1,125 ratings, while Super Block Slider has 8,000+ installs and 100/100 from just 14. MetaSlider sits between them, with 500,000+ installs and 92/100 from 742.
Look at the tested-up-to line as well. Seven of the ten list WordPress 7.1.4 and three list 7.0.8. That isn't a fault on its own, but if you've just updated WordPress, it's a reason to try the slider on a staging copy of your site first.

My plain advice on slider plugins
Pick the plugin by what goes in the slides, then put your effort into the first slide, because that's the part web.dev's guidance says can drag your page speed down. Keep it to one light image, check your LCP afterwards, and if a slider isn't earning its place at the top of the page, move it lower.
