Risk assessment software helps employers record hazards, judge how likely and serious harm could be, and track the actions that control each risk. Some tools focus on RAMS for contractors, others sit inside wider health and safety systems with incidents and training. Eleven options follow in no particular order.
Risk assessments often get written once, filed and forgotten until something goes wrong or a client asks for a copy.
Software's what keeps them alive: shared with the team, reviewed on time and linked to actions. The eleven tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. My piece on the importance of health and safety in the workplace covers why it matters.
Risk assessment tools side by side
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free plan, a free version, a free account, a free edition or an open source release. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

The three things the law asks for
The Health and Safety Executive says that under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, the minimum an employer must do is identify what could cause injury or illness in the business, decide how likely harm is and how serious it could be, and take action to eliminate the hazard or, if that isn't possible, control the risk.
Notice that the third step is action. A beautifully formatted assessment with no follow-up doesn't protect anyone. Pick software that turns each control into a task with an owner and a date, so you can show it was done.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
RAMS tool or full health and safety system?
RAMS tools are built for contractors who'll need risk assessments and method statements for every job, quickly, often to win the work.
Full health and safety systems hold assessments alongside incidents, inspections, training and audits, which suits employers who've got several sites or a safety team.
A small firm with one office won't usually need the big system. A contractor sending RAMS to clients every week almost certainly needs a RAMS tool.
To check the controls are working on site, our guide to inspection software covers tools that replace paper checklists.
Questions to ask a risk assessment vendor
- Does it include templates for your type of work?
- Can workers read and sign assessments on a phone?
- Does it remind you when a review is due?
- Can each control become a tracked action?
- Will it hold method statements as well?
- Can you share assessments with clients easily?
Spotting hazards is one half, and this list of incident reporting software looks at tools that make it quick for anyone to report a near miss.
Signs your risk assessments need software
- Reviews are overdue. Set automatic reminders.
- Workers never read them. Put them on phones.
- Clients chase you for RAMS. Use templates.
- Actions get forgotten. Assign owners and dates.
Do you make risk assessment or safety software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on risk assessment software
Take your three highest-risk tasks and rebuild just those assessments in a trial before you move everything across. If the software makes the actions clearer and gets workers to read them, it's worth moving the rest.
For the bigger picture beyond health and safety, my primer on managing risk is a simple place to start.
Frequently asked questions
What is risk assessment software?
It's software that helps employers record hazards, judge how likely and serious harm could be, and track the actions taken to control each risk.
Do I legally need a risk assessment?
The Health and Safety Executive says employers must identify hazards, judge the risk and take action to control it under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
What is RAMS?
RAMS stands for risk assessment and method statement. Contractors often have to provide them before starting work on a client's site.
Is there free risk assessment software?
Some tools offer a free version and others a free trial. Check the free plan column above and confirm on the vendor's site.
How often should risk assessments be reviewed?
Review them whenever something changes, such as new equipment, staff or an incident, and on a regular schedule. Software can remind you when a review is due.
Can risk assessment software work on phones?
Most modern tools let workers read, complete and sign assessments on a phone or tablet at the job site.
