Best Resume Writing Services (2026): 10 Compared

A resume writing service pairs you with a professional writer who rewrites your resume, and often your cover letter and LinkedIn profile, after a call or questionnaire. Services range from large firms with hundreds of writers to one-person executive specialists. This page compares ten resume writing services in no particular order, with what to check before you hand over your career history.

Hiring a resume writer makes sense when you're too close to your own career to see what matters. A good writer asks the questions you wouldn't ask yourself, then turns the answers into a document a recruiter can scan in seconds.

The ten services below cover executives, career changers, federal applicants and early-career job seekers. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the service's own website, read this week. If you'd like to see what recruiters look for first, read what makes a resume look good to a hiring manager.

Resume writing services at a glance

I checked the last column on each service's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free review, critique, consultation or call before you buy. Not stated means the pages I read didn't name one. Services change their offers often, so confirm on the provider's own page before you book.

The promise that should make you walk away

The Federal Trade Commission's guidance on job scams puts it plainly: if someone asks you to pay to get a job, that's a scam.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

A resume writer sells documents and advice. They can make your experience easier to read, help you get past screening software and prepare you for interviews, but they can't hand you a job. So treat any promise of a guaranteed job, or a guarantee you can't read in full before you order, as a warning sign. Ask what happens if you don't get interviews, and get the answer in writing.

Large firm, boutique or one-person service?

Large firms have writers across many industries and a set process, usually a questionnaire, a draft and a round of edits. They're quick to start and work well for most professional roles.

Boutique and one-person services spend longer on discovery calls and personal branding. They suit senior people whose career story is complicated, but capacity is limited, so book well before you need the finished resume.

Some services also run your job search for you, applying and networking on your behalf. That's a much bigger commitment than a rewrite, so be clear which one you want before your first call.

Six questions to ask before you hire a resume writer

  1. Who will write my resume, and what's their background?
  2. Will we talk on the phone, or is it a questionnaire only?
  3. How many rounds of edits are included?
  4. Will I get an editable file I can update myself?
  5. What does the guarantee cover, word for word?
  6. Can I see a before and after for someone at my level?

Signs a resume service is the wrong match

  • You can't speak to a writer at all. Ask how questions get answered.
  • Every sample reads the same. Templates in, templates out.
  • The guarantee is vague. Get the terms in writing.
  • They promise a job. Walk away.

My plain advice before you hire a resume writer

Write down five achievements with numbers before your first call, even rough ones. Writers can only shape what you give them, and the people who get the most from a service are the ones who arrive with stories, not just job titles. Then read the draft out loud: if it doesn't sound like you on a good day, ask for changes.

If you'd like to try a do-it-yourself version first, my guide to ATS-friendly resume templates covers the format screening software reads best.

Frequently asked questions

Are resume writing services worth it?

They can be when you're changing career, moving up a level or struggling to get interviews. Check samples and the edit process before you commit.

How long does a professional resume take?

Most services work in days rather than weeks, but executive services with long discovery calls take longer. Ask for the timeline upfront.

Do resume writers use AI?

Some say every word is human-written, others use AI tools in their process. If it matters to you, ask before you order.

Can a resume writer guarantee me a job?

No. The Federal Trade Commission warns that paying someone for a job is a scam. Writers sell documents and advice.

Do resume services also write LinkedIn profiles?

Many do, and some bundle cover letters and interview coaching too. Check what each package includes.

What should I prepare for a resume writer?

Your current resume, the jobs you're targeting, and a list of achievements with any numbers you can find.
