Programmatic Advertising Platforms (2026): 10 DSPs Compared

Programmatic advertising platforms, usually called demand-side platforms or DSPs, let you buy ad space across thousands of websites and apps automatically, bidding on each impression in real time against the audience you want. Pick by who'll run it: a self-serve team, an agency, an enterprise trading desk or a retail media buyer. Ten options follow in no particular order.

Every time a page loads, an auction decides which ad appears, and a DSP is the software that bids in that auction for you. You set the audience, the goal and the limits, and it buys display, native, video, audio and more across the open web without you calling a single publisher.

This list covers open web, native and display buying; streaming TV gets its own list. The ten platforms below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from each vendor's own website, read as of Oct 2026. If retargeting is your main goal, my guide to AdRoll alternatives is the better start.

DSPs by buyer type and channel

I checked the free plan column on each vendor's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version or an open source edition. Trial only means it names a time-limited free trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, so check the vendor's own site before you sign up.

Ten programmatic advertising platforms and DSPs

Basis

Beeswax

Cognitiv

Best for: Advertisers wanting deep learning to find audiences, applied inside the DSP they already use or through its own in-house DSP.

Criteo

Best for: Retailers and brands connecting commerce data with media, with predictive bidding and retail media across the open internet.

Display & Video 360

Best for: Enterprises on Google Marketing Platform wanting creative workspaces, automated bidding and analytics in one campaign tool.

Eskimi

Best for: Agencies wanting one system for activation, bidding and creatives across display, video, CTV, in-game, DOOH, native and audio.

Quantcast

Best for: Brands and agencies across retail, travel, gaming, finance and B2B wanting a DSP that runs on autonomous AI and its own audience graph.

Simpli.fi

Best for: Local and multi-location businesses buying CTV, native, audio and DOOH with geo-fencing and keyword targeting from one platform.

StackAdapt

Best for: Marketers running connected TV, digital out-of-home, email, direct mail, audio and native from one AI advertising platform.

The Trade Desk

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

The DSP label is quietly disappearing from home pages

Here's what I noticed reading the vendor pages. StackAdapt now calls itself an AI Advertising Platform, Basis an Advertising Automation Platform for Omnichannel Media, and Criteo The Global Commerce Intelligence Platform. Adform's page leads with Adform FLOW. Only a few, such as Simpli.fi and Quantcast, still put Programmatic DSP or DSP Platform in their titles.

One older name has gone altogether: the Beeswax page now says it's part of FreeWheel. So don't shortlist by label. Ask what each platform buys, which channels it reaches and how much of the work its AI does for you.

Self-serve, agency or enterprise programmatic buying

  • Self-serve for mid-size teams. Platforms you can log into and run yourself, often with managed help available. Good for in-house marketers running several channels.
  • Agency systems. Tools that combine planning, buying, creative and reporting so one team can run many clients.
  • Enterprise and commerce media. Large DSPs tied to big data and analytics stacks, and commerce platforms that use shopping data to target and measure.

Five questions to put to any DSP vendor

  1. Channels. Does it reach the formats you need, such as native, audio, digital out-of-home or in-game?
  2. Targeting. Is it built on its own audience data, your first-party data, or both?
  3. Optimisation. How much is automated, and can you see why it bid the way it did?
  4. Brand safety. What fraud and brand safety controls run on every impression?
  5. Service. Is it fully self-serve, managed, or a mix?

Programmatic gets messy fast without clear naming. My ad account naming and structure cheat sheet keeps campaigns readable when you're buying across many channels.

My plain advice on choosing a DSP

Match the platform to the people who'll run it. A small in-house team needs a self-serve tool with good support, an agency needs one system for many clients, and an enterprise trading desk needs control and data integration. The most common mistake I see is picking the most powerful DSP for a team without the hours or skills to run it.

Run a short test with one clear goal and one channel before you spread spend across everything. You'll learn more from one clean result than from ten blurred ones.

Frequently asked questions

What is a programmatic advertising platform?

It's software, usually a demand-side platform, that buys digital ad space automatically, bidding on each impression in real time against the audience and goals you set.

What's the difference between a DSP and an ad network?

An ad network sells space from its own group of publishers. A DSP bids across many exchanges and publishers at once, so you reach more of the open web from one place.

Can small businesses use programmatic advertising?

Yes. Several platforms on this list offer self-serve access or managed packages, and some focus on local and multi-location businesses.

What is retail media in programmatic?

It's using a retailer's or commerce platform's shopping data to target and measure ads, either on the retailer's own sites or across the wider internet.

Is programmatic the same as connected TV advertising?

CTV is one channel programmatic platforms can buy. Some DSPs here include it, but streaming TV specialists work differently and are covered separately.
