PDM software, short for product data management, gives engineering teams one controlled home for CAD files, revisions and bills of materials. It stops two people overwriting the same part, keeps a history of every change and makes released drawings easy to find. Eleven options follow in no particular order.
Ask any engineering team about their worst week and there's a good chance it involves the wrong revision: a drawing sent to the machine shop that was superseded two days earlier.
PDM exists to stop that. The eleven tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. For the wider shift in how products get made, my piece on how advanced tools are reshaping manufacturing sets the scene.
PDM tools side by side
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free plan, a free version, a free account, a free edition or an open source release. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Eleven PDM tools for engineering teams
Altium 365
Best for: Electronics teams who want PCB design data, reviews and collaboration in one secure cloud platform rather than shared drives.
Autodesk Vault
Best for: Engineering teams on Inventor or AutoCAD who want check-in, check-out and revision control that sits right beside their CAD.
Bild
Best for: Mechanical engineering teams at hardware start-ups who want cloud PDM with CAD diffs and AI workflows from day one.
COOLORANGE
Best for: Engineering teams who want to automate file jobs and connect Vault to their ERP instead of doing it by hand.
Kenesto
Best for: Small engineering firms who want cloud file management for CAD without running their own PDM server, with a free trial.
Meridian
Best for: Owners and operators of plants and facilities who need engineering drawings and documents controlled for decades.
Onshape
Best for: Product teams who want PDM built into a cloud CAD system so several engineers can work on one design at once.
OpenBOM
Best for: Hardware teams who want BOMs, inventory and procurement linked to their CAD data, with a 14-day free trial.
PDXpert
Best for: Small and mid-sized manufacturers who want part numbers, BOMs and change orders controlled, with a free full evaluation download.
SOLIDWORKS PDM
Best for: Design teams standardised on SOLIDWORKS who want vaulting, workflows and revision control from the same vendor.
Teamcenter
Best for: Large manufacturers who need PDM as part of a full product lifecycle system, either on premises or as a cloud service.
Which PDM tool fits your CAD setup
- Inventor and AutoCAD shops: Autodesk Vault, with COOLORANGE to automate it.
- SOLIDWORKS teams: SOLIDWORKS PDM.
- Cloud CAD with PDM built in: Onshape.
- Hardware start-ups in the cloud: Bild or Kenesto.
- BOMs shared with suppliers: OpenBOM.
- Simple change control for small makers: PDXpert.
- Electronics and PCB data: Altium 365.
- Plant drawings and big manufacturers: Meridian or Teamcenter.
The 2026 rule for medical device design records
The US Food and Drug Administration says its Quality Management System Regulation became effective on February 2, 2026. It amends the device current good manufacturing practice requirements in 21 CFR Part 820 by incorporating ISO 13485:2016, the international standard for medical device quality management.
If you make medical devices, controlled design records, approvals and change history were already expected. The new rule lines US requirements up with the standard most of the world uses, which makes a PDM or PLM system with audit trails close to essential for anyone selling into both markets.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
PDM or PLM: where one ends and the other starts
PDM looks after engineering data: CAD files, drawings, revisions and the bill of materials that comes out of the design.
PLM goes wider, pulling in suppliers, quality, compliance and the whole life of a product from idea to retirement.
Most small teams need PDM first. If you're already struggling with change orders across several departments, it's worth looking at a system that grows into PLM.
Once parts exist, our guide to parts inventory software looks at tools that track stock and where it sits.
Questions to put to a PDM vendor
- Does it work inside the CAD software you use every day?
- Can two engineers work on related parts without clashes?
- How are released drawings separated from work in progress?
- Does it produce a bill of materials you can export?
- Can suppliers see the files they need, and only those?
- Is it hosted for you, or will you run a server?
From controlled files to finished parts, our round-up of CNC tools compares software for cutting.
Signs your team needs PDM
- Files end in final_v7. Let software track revisions.
- Two people edit one part. Use check-in and check-out.
- The shop gets old drawings. Separate released files.
- BOMs live in spreadsheets. Pull them from CAD.

My plain advice on PDM software
Count how many times in the past four weeks someone used the wrong revision or couldn't find the latest file. If the answer's more than zero, PDM will pay you back in time, and the right one is usually the one that sits inside the CAD you already use.
For a longer view of where manufacturing is heading, my piece on mass customisation in consumer product manufacturing is worth a read.
Frequently asked questions
What is PDM software?
PDM, or product data management, software gives engineering teams one controlled place for CAD files, revisions and bills of materials, with check-in, check-out and a full change history.
What's the difference between PDM and PLM?
PDM manages engineering data such as CAD files and BOMs. PLM covers the wider product life, including suppliers, quality and compliance.
Do small engineering teams need PDM?
Once two or more people work on the same designs, PDM prevents overwritten files and wrong revisions, which is usually worth it even for small teams.
Is there cloud PDM software?
Yes. Several tools run in the cloud, and some cloud CAD systems include PDM built in, so there's no server to manage.
Is there free PDM software?
Some tools offer a free trial or evaluation. Check the free plan column above and confirm on each vendor's site.
Does PDM help with medical device rules?
It helps keep controlled design records and change history. The FDA's Quality Management System Regulation, effective February 2, 2026, incorporates ISO 13485:2016.
