The best LIMS software depends on the kind of lab you run: a cloud LIMS with a customer portal suits a testing lab, an ELN and LIMS combination suits a research team, and an enterprise suite suits regulated labs in pharma or food. Eleven options follow in no particular order.
Spreadsheets work for a lab right up until an auditor asks who changed a result, when and why. That's usually the day people start searching for a laboratory information management system.
The eleven LIMS options below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, from cloud tools for small testing labs to suites used by regulated manufacturers. Every description comes from the vendor's own site, read this week. If you're also writing up findings, my tips for starting a research paper may help.
LIMS software at a glance
In the free plan column, Yes means the tool's own site names a free plan, a free version, a free app or an open source edition. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it.
| Tool | Type | Good for | Free plan |

Eleven LIMS options to consider
LabCollector
Best for: Biobank managers and small labs that want sample storage, biobanking inventory and a lab notebook in one all-in-one system they can sign up to quickly.
Labguru
Best for: Biotech start-ups and academic labs that want an ELN, LIMS and inventory tools together, with a programme aimed at startups.
Labii
Best for: Research teams that want a fully customisable ELN and LIMS on one data platform, with an AI research assistant built in.
LabLynx
Best for: Growing labs that want separate LIMS, ELN and lab automation suites they can combine as their work and team grow.
LabVantage
Best for: Pharma, biobanking and diagnostics labs that want LIMS, ELN, LES and scientific data management from one vendor from one vendor.
LabWare
Best for: Regulated labs in pharma, food, water or forensics that want a LIMS and ELN they can run cloud-hosted or self-hosted.
Lockbox LIMS
Best for: Clinical and biotech labs that want sample tracking plus quality tools like document control in the same LIMS.
Matrix Gemini LIMS
Best for: Quality control teams that want a configurable LIMS with an express edition, a stability testing module and a hosted option from a specialist vendor.
QBench
Best for: Testing labs in food, agriculture, environmental or materials work that want a cloud LIMS with a customer portal for results.
SciSure
Best for: Universities and research organisations that want lab notebook, LIMS and lab health and safety tools from the company formed by eLabNext and SciShield.
STARLIMS
Best for: Larger labs that want a LIMS plus wider laboratory informatics from a vendor that specialises in the field.
The audit trail rule to test first
If your lab works to FDA rules, 21 CFR 11.10 matters. It asks for secure, computer-generated, time-stamped audit trails that record operator entries and actions that create, modify or delete electronic records, and it says record changes must not obscure earlier information.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
In a demo, change a result and then ask to see the trail. It's a quick test and it's very revealing. You want the old value, the new value, who did it and when, all visible without a support ticket.
Testing lab, research lab or regulated manufacturer?
Testing labs need sample intake, results and certificates going back to customers quickly, often through a portal. Research labs care more about experiments, notebooks and inventory. Regulated manufacturers need validation, stability studies and quality modules that stand up to inspection.
Most LIMS products lean toward one of those worlds. Ask vendors which kind of lab most of their customers run, and don't be shy about asking to speak to one.
Questions to ask before you shortlist
- How long does a typical setup take for a lab our size?
- Can we configure workflows ourselves, or does every change need the vendor?
- Which instruments connect directly, and which need manual entry?
- How are user roles, sign-offs and electronic signatures handled?
- Is it cloud-hosted, self-hosted, or can we choose?
- How do we export every record if we ever leave?
Features that matter more than they look
- Barcode labels. Every sample is scanned, not retyped.
- Instrument links. Results arrive without copy and paste.
- Role-based sign-off. The right person approves the right result.
- Customer portal. Clients see their results without emailing you.
When a spreadsheet stops being enough
Lost samples, results typed twice, and nobody sure which version of a file is current are the usual warning signs. Once you're spending more time chasing records than running tests, a LIMS will save you hours every week.
Do you make LIMS software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on choosing a LIMS
Pick the LIMS that fits your next audit, not just your next experiment. A lovely interface won't help if the audit trail or sign-off process is weak, and switching a LIMS later is painful because your history lives inside it.
Run a real sample through every shortlisted system, from intake to report, with the people who'll use it daily. Then check the plumbing: backups, access controls and how the vendor handles updates. My office tech health check is a quick way to review the rest of your setup at the same time.
Frequently asked questions
What is LIMS software?
A laboratory information management system tracks samples, tests, results, inventory and people across a lab, and keeps records for audits.
What's the difference between a LIMS and an ELN?
A LIMS manages samples and structured testing workflows. An ELN is a digital lab notebook for experiments. Several tools here combine both.
Is there a free LIMS?
None of the LIMS products on this list named a free plan on the pages I read. Some offer quick sign-ups or demos instead.
Do I need a LIMS for FDA compliance?
Not always, but electronic records under 21 CFR 11.10 need controls such as secure, time-stamped audit trails, which a good LIMS provides.
Cloud or self-hosted LIMS?
Cloud suits smaller labs that don't want to run servers. Self-hosted suits labs with strict IT rules. Some vendors offer both.
How long does a LIMS take to set up?
It varies widely with the size of the lab and how much configuration you need, so ask each vendor for a timeline based on labs like yours.
