Desktop Publishing Software (2026): 10 Tools Compared

Desktop publishing software lays out text and images on pages for print or screen: brochures, magazines, books and flipbooks. The term now covers three different jobs, page layout for print, book-interior formatting for authors and digital flipbook publishing, and one product rarely does all three. Ten tools follow, in no particular order, with the job each one does.

If you've searched for desktop publishing software lately, you'll have seen the results jump from design suites to book formatters to flipbook makers without saying why. They're all desktop publishing in a sense, but they don't do the same job, and picking the wrong kind means fighting the software on every page.

The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order. Each description comes from the vendor's own website, read on 1 Nov 2026. The classic names, Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress, Scribus and Microsoft Publisher, aren't in this ten, and my list of InDesign alternatives covers that end on its own.

Page layout, book and flipbook tools in this list

Affinity

Best for: Designers who want professional design, photo editing and page layout in one app, without switching files between programs.

Cambric

Best for: Authors who'd like book writing, formatting and production handled in one native desktop studio for Windows and Mac.

CorelDRAW

Best for: Designers who need vector illustration, layout, photo editing and typography, with versions for Windows, Mac and the web.

Flippique

Best for: Publishers turning images or a PDF into an interactive flipbook on their own computer, so the pages never leave the machine.

Joomag

Best for: Marketing teams turning print publications and static PDFs into mobile-optimised interactive magazines, catalogues and reports.

Koberger

Best for: Indie authors who'd rather bring in a Word document, choose a design and download EPUB and print PDF files, with nothing to install.

Marq

Best for: Businesses that want teams creating on-brand content from locked templates, then publishing to social, sending to print or embedding in email.

Sloom Studio

Best for: Comic artists and authors composing panels, speech balloons and lettering, with print-ready PDF, EPUB and IDML exports.

Swift Publisher

Best for: Mac users laying out brochures, flyers, calendars, labels and business cards in an all-purpose page layout app.

Vellum

Best for: Writers on a Mac who want ebooks for every store and a paperback or hardcover edition generated at the same time.

Three jobs hiding under one search term

Here's what the vendors say about themselves, and it tells you more than a feature grid. Swift Publisher's title calls it 'Easy Desktop Publishing and Page Layout Software for Mac', and Affinity offers design, photo editing and 'page layout in one app'. Marq describes itself as 'formerly Lucidpress' and now sells brand templates. Flippique is a 'Flipbook Maker for Windows and Mac', and Joomag calls itself a 'Digital Publishing and Content Experience Platform'.

Then there's the book end. Sloom Studio lists 'PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-4' exports for books and comics, Vellum names '24 Trim Sizes' for paperback and hardcover, and Koberger turns a Word document into 'EPUB and print PDF files'.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

So the split a searcher wouldn't guess is this: desktop publishing now means three separate jobs, print layout, book interiors and digital flipbooks, and one product rarely covers all three. Work out which job you've got before you compare anything else.

What each kind of layout tool is built for

  • Print layout apps. Multi-page documents with master pages, text frames, images and bleed, exported as a print-ready PDF for a printer. This is where brochures, magazines, menus and annual reports live.
  • Book-interior formatters. Built for long text: chapters, running headers, page numbers, drop caps and trim sizes, with ebook files made from the same manuscript. They're far quicker for a novel or a non-fiction book than a general layout app, but they won't design a flyer.
  • Flipbook and digital publishers. They take a finished PDF or a set of images and turn it into an online, page-turning publication you share by link or embed on a website. Some add interactive elements and reader insights.
  • Design suites with layout built in. Vector and photo apps with page layout inside, useful when one person handles the logo, the images and the brochure itself.

Print-ready files: the part beginners get wrong

If anything you make is going to a commercial printer, ask for their file spec before you start. Most want a PDF with bleed (artwork running past the trim edge), crop marks, embedded fonts and images at print resolution, often to a PDF/X standard. A tool that only exports a screen PDF can leave you with white slivers at the edge or soft, blurry photos.

Colour is the other trap. Screens show colour in RGB, while printing presses use CMYK, so check whether your software lets you work in CMYK or convert to it before you send anything off. For small changes to a finished file, my guide to the best PDF editors for business covers tools that edit a PDF without rebuilding it.

Questions to settle before you pick one

  1. Is the end product printed, read on screen, or both?
  2. Are you laying out short documents like flyers, or long text like a book?
  3. Which computer do you work on? Some layout apps are Mac only, and some run in a browser.
  4. Will other people on your team need to edit the same templates?
  5. Does your printer or publisher need a particular PDF standard, trim size or file format such as EPUB?
  6. Can you open files from your old software, or will you rebuild every document by hand?

Do you make desktop publishing or page layout software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on choosing desktop publishing software

Pick the job first, then the tool. If you're producing brochures, menus or reports for print, look at a page layout app or a design suite with layout built in, and check its print PDF export before anything else. If you're publishing a book, a dedicated book formatter will save you days of fiddling with headers and page numbers. If the publication only ever lives online, a flipbook or digital publishing platform is the shorter route. And if all you need is a quick social graphic or a one-page flyer, a browser design tool may be enough, and my Canva alternatives roundup covers those.

Whatever you choose, take one real document all the way through, including the export your printer or platform asks for, before you move a whole catalogue across.

Frequently asked questions

What is desktop publishing software?

It's software for laying out text and images on pages, for print or for screen. It covers brochures, magazines, books, catalogues and digital flipbooks, and most tools finish with a PDF or an ebook file.

Is desktop publishing the same as graphic design?

They overlap. Graphic design tools focus on single images and illustrations, while desktop publishing handles multi-page documents with text flowing from page to page. Several design suites now include page layout too.

Which kind of desktop publishing software suits a book?

A book-interior formatter, in most cases. These tools handle chapters, headers, page numbers and trim sizes, and export ebook and print files from one manuscript, which a general layout app makes you build by hand.

Can I make a flipbook from a PDF?

Yes. Flipbook and digital publishing tools take a finished PDF or a set of images and turn it into a page-turning publication you can share by link or embed on a website.

Do I need CMYK files for printing?

Most commercial printers ask for CMYK, because presses print in cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Ask your printer for their spec, including bleed and the PDF standard they want, before you start the layout.

Is there free desktop publishing software?

Yes. Some tools offer a free plan, a free creative suite or free use for individuals, and others offer a free trial. What's included changes, so check each vendor's own site before you commit.
