Best Conversational AI Platforms (2026): 10 Compared

Conversational AI platforms let a business build AI agents that talk to customers by chat or voice, and they come in three kinds: enterprise contact-centre platforms, build-it-yourself platforms for product teams, and cloud services that developers build on. The right one depends on your channels, your systems and your team. Ten options follow in no particular order.

Search for a chatbot platform and most of the vendors you'll find no longer use the word. They sell AI agents now, and that label hides a bigger difference: who each platform is built for.

The ten platforms below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order. Each description comes from the vendor's own website, read as of Nov 2026, and this page doesn't place any platform above another.

Ten platforms for customer conversations

Amazon Lex

Best for: Developers on AWS who want a fully managed service for building a chatbot, voice assistant, machine learning-powered IVR or virtual agent into any application.

Cognigy

Best for: Enterprise contact centres that want AI agents across voice, chat and messaging, plus a copilot for every human agent.

Google Customer Experience Agent Studio

Best for: Google Cloud teams that want to build, evaluate and deploy personalised conversational agents on a platform powered by Gemini.

Haptik

Best for: Customer experience teams that want enterprise-grade conversational AI agents, including voice so customers can speak instead of typing.

Kore.ai

Best for: Large organisations that want agentic AI to resolve customer cases from start to finish across every channel and system, plus tools for employee productivity.

LivePerson

Best for: Brands that want to design, simulate, validate and keep improving conversations handled by both AI agents and human agents.

Parloa

Best for: Enterprise CX teams that want to build, test and scale voice and chat AI agents on one agent management platform.

Rasa

Best for: Product teams building customer-facing AI who want to tune agents in the UI, in code or with a coding agent, adding order and conditions where needed.

Voiceflow

Best for: Customer experience teams that want to build, launch and scale chat and voice AI agents for support and own every customer interaction.

Yellow.ai

Best for: Companies automating both customer experience and employee experience with AI agents that hold human-like conversations at scale.

The category renamed itself: chatbots became AI agents

Kore.ai, Yellow.ai, Parloa and Haptik all lead with AI agents on their own pages rather than chatbots, while LivePerson's page calls itself a predictable conversational AI platform. Cognigy's page now carries the NiCE name and describes AI agents for contact centres across voice and chat. These are the enterprise contact-centre platforms.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

The build-it-yourself end looks different. Rasa's page describes an agent platform for product teams building customer-facing AI that you can tune in the UI or in code, and Voiceflow's targets customer experience teams building chat and voice agents.

Then there are the cloud services. Amazon Lex is described as a managed service for building a chatbot, voice assistant, ML-powered IVR or virtual agent, and Google's page is titled Customer Experience Agent Studio and describes personalised conversational agents on Gemini. So the first question isn't which platform is smartest. It's whether you're buying for an enterprise contact centre, a product team, or a developer who'll build on a cloud service.

Five questions that narrow the shortlist

  • Which channels? Web chat, messaging apps, the phone, or all of them. Voice changes the shortlist, so ask each vendor how calls are handled before you go further.
  • Which systems must it touch? An agent that can check an order, rebook a delivery or update an account needs access to your CRM, help desk and back-office tools.
  • Who'll build and run it? Contact-centre platforms expect a CX team, agent platforms for product teams expect people comfortable in code, and cloud services expect developers.
  • How do humans step in? Check how a conversation hands over to a person, and what that person sees when it does.
  • How will you test it? Look for ways to simulate conversations and review transcripts before customers ever reach the agent.

Running a fair pilot

  1. Pick one high-volume, low-risk conversation, such as order status or opening hours.
  2. Write down what a good outcome looks like before you start: resolved, handed over or abandoned.
  3. Connect only the systems that conversation needs.
  4. Run real transcripts through two platforms and compare the answers side by side.
  5. Have your support team read a sample of conversations every week.
  6. Only decide what to expand to next once the first conversation works.

If phone calls are your main channel, my list of AI voice agent platforms goes further on voice, and for simpler website bots see my roundup of chatbot builders.

My plain advice on choosing a conversational AI platform

Work out who you're buying for before you book a single demo. If you run a large contact centre with voice and chat, start with the enterprise platforms and ask each one to handle your real transcripts. If you've got a product team that wants control in code, look at the build-it-yourself platforms. If your developers already live in one cloud provider, its own service may be the shortest path. Whichever way you go, start with one conversation, prove it works, then grow from there.

Frequently asked questions

What is a conversational AI platform?

Software for building AI agents that talk to people in natural language, by chat, messaging or voice, usually to answer customer questions or complete simple tasks.

Is a conversational AI platform the same as a chatbot builder?

They overlap. Chatbot builders tend to focus on simpler website bots, while conversational AI platforms usually add voice, deeper system connections and tools for large support teams.

Why do vendors call them AI agents now?

Because the products now aim to complete tasks, such as checking an order or updating an account, rather than only answering scripted questions. Most vendor pages in this category lead with the term.

Do I need developers to use one?

It depends on the platform. Enterprise contact-centre platforms are built for CX teams, some agent platforms let you work in a visual interface or in code, and cloud services expect developers.

Can these platforms handle phone calls?

Several say on their own pages that they support voice as well as chat. Check how each one connects to your phone system before you commit.

How should I compare platforms fairly?

Run the same real customer conversations through two or three platforms, with the same connected systems, and have your support team judge the results.
