Churn Reduction Tools (2026): 8 Options for Subscriptions

The best churn reduction software catches people as they decide to cancel, asks why and makes a relevant offer, while feedback and customer success tools spot trouble earlier. Pick by the kind of churn you've got and the billing system you use. Eight tools follow, in no particular order, for subscription businesses.

Every subscription business loses customers. What you can change is how many leave for a reason you could've fixed, and how much you learn from the ones who go anyway. Descriptions below come from each vendor's own site as of Nov 2026.

People leaving or payments failing?

Churn comes in two kinds, and they need different fixes.

Voluntary churn is a person deciding to go. They've clicked cancel, or they're about to. This list is about them: the tools that catch that moment, ask why and offer something useful, along with tools that show you who's unhappy before they get there.

Involuntary churn is a payment that fails. The customer often didn't mean to leave at all, and the fix is retrying the card and reminding them to update it. That's a separate job, and my guide to dunning software covers it. A few of the tools below do both, so you'll see some names on both lists.

Look at your own cancellations before you shop. If most of your lost customers never chose to leave, an exit survey won't help you, and if most of them clicked cancel, chasing cards won't either.

Cancel flows, listening tools and billing suites

Dedicated cancel flow tools. Raaft is a no-code option for SaaS products, and ProsperStack puts its weight on measuring and testing retention. Churnkey belongs here too and is built specifically for Stripe, so check your billing setup before you go further.

Tools that listen. Retently collects survey feedback, and it finds unhappy customers but doesn't run a cancel flow. Vitally is a customer success platform for B2B accounts with a team looking after them. Neither one will stop a click on your cancel button, but both can warn you sooner. My list of customer success software goes further on that side.

Retention inside billing. Chargebee Retention sits within the Chargebee family and Paddle Retain within Paddle Billing, while Recurly brings churn reporting into its subscription platform. These make sense when you're already on that billing system, or you're choosing one anyway.

My advice: learn the reason before making the offer

Don't start with discounts. A cancel flow's most useful output in the early weeks is a clean list of reasons people are leaving, because that tells you what to fix in the product, the onboarding or the way you sell. An offer can keep somebody for another few months, but it won't fix the thing that made them want to go.

Match the offer to the reason. Someone who's only using your product at certain times of year might take a pause. Someone who never got set up needs help, not money off. Someone who's outgrown you should probably be allowed to leave politely, with the door open for a return.

And start simple. A short flow with two or three honest options will teach you more than a clever one you never get round to launching. If you want more depth on the reasons, pair it with a short survey sent to customers who are still with you.

A cancel button should still cancel

Retention tools make it easy to add steps between a customer and the exit, and a flow that's too clever can backfire. Beyond the irritation, there's a legal angle that subscription businesses selling to US customers should know about.

The Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act, known as ROSCA, deals with online subscriptions and other recurring charges. As published by Cornell Law School's Legal Information Institute, 15 U.S.C. 8403 lists providing simple mechanisms for a consumer to stop recurring charges among its conditions for this kind of selling.

So choose and configure your retention flow with a clear way out. Before launch, try these yourself:

  • Can a customer finish cancelling without speaking to anyone?
  • Is the option to decline an offer as easy to see as the offer itself?
  • Does the flow end with a plain confirmation that the subscription has stopped?
  • Can you change or remove any step without waiting for a developer?

This is general information, not legal or tax advice, and rules vary by place, so check the regulator or a qualified adviser.

Eight retention tools alphabetically

Chargebee Retention

Best for: A cancel experience and a view of why customers are leaving, now part of Chargebee Growth, according to its page.

Churnkey

Best for: Stripe businesses handling cancellations and failed payments together; its page describes open-source cancel flows and a Stripe-native setup.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Paddle Retain

Best for: Businesses billing through Paddle, since this toolkit for dunning and automated cancellation flows is built into Paddle Billing and only useful there.

ProsperStack

Best for: Subscription teams that want to measure and test retention, with dunning offers and conversion incentives for free users listed on its page.

Raaft

Best for: SaaS products wanting a no-code cancellation flow that asks why users cancel and makes an offer; its page says there's a free-forever option.

Recurly

Best for: Companies wanting one subscription platform for plans, billing, failed-payment recovery and churn reporting instead of a separate cancel tool.

Retently

Best for: Ecommerce and retail brands finding unhappy customers through NPS, CSAT and CES surveys; it doesn't run cancel flows.

Vitally

Best for: B2B account teams wanting automation, real-time customer data and AI-driven insights; it isn't aimed at self-serve consumer plans.

What to read once the flow's been running

A cancel flow isn't a set-and-forget job. Give it enough time to see a full billing cycle, then look at these:

  • The reasons. Which ones keep repeating, and has anybody done anything about the top one?
  • Who came back. Are the people who accepted an offer still with you later on, or did you only delay the same cancellation?
  • Support complaints. Are customers contacting you because they couldn't work out how to leave? That's a sign the flow's gone too far.
  • Payment failures, separately. Keep those numbers apart, so a good month for card recovery doesn't hide a bad month for cancellations.

Treat any save claim on a vendor's site as that vendor's own number. Your customers and your product are different, so the only result that counts is the one in your own account. If you're looking further ahead at spotting risk early, my guide to using AI to predict client churn is a sensible next step.

Frequently asked questions

What is churn reduction software?

It's software that helps subscription businesses keep customers, usually through cancel flows, feedback surveys, customer success tracking or features built into billing.

What's the difference between churn software and dunning software?

Churn tools here focus on people choosing to leave. Dunning tools focus on failed payments, where the customer often didn't mean to go. Some products cover both.

Do I need a cancel flow if I've only got a few customers?

You may not need software yet. A short question at cancellation and a personal email can tell you the same things while your numbers are small.

Can a cancel flow get a business into trouble?

It can if it hides the way out. ROSCA refers to simple mechanisms for stopping recurring charges, and other places have their own rules, so check with the regulator or a qualified adviser.

Will these tools work with my billing system?

Check first, because it's often the deciding factor. Some are built around one billing provider, and the built-in toolkits only help if you bill through that provider.

Are survey tools enough to reduce churn?

They tell you who's unhappy and why, but somebody still has to act on it. They work best alongside a process for following up.
