Dunning software recovers subscription payments that fail, from expired cards to bank declines, by retrying the charge at better times and messaging the customer to update their details. You either add a recovery tool on top of your billing system or use the dunning built into it. Ten options follow in no particular order.
Failed payments are the quiet leak in every subscription business. The customer didn't decide to leave; their card expired or the bank said no, and nobody followed up. Vindicia's own page puts it plainly: involuntary churn isn't really about customers choosing to leave.
The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from each vendor's own website, read as of Oct 2026. This list is about recovery only. For the wider billing system, my guide to subscription billing software features covers what else to look for.
Dunning and payment recovery tools at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each vendor's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version or an open source edition. Trial only means it names a time-limited free trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, so check the vendor's own site before you sign up.

A rebrand, a Stripe layer and a split between recovery specialists
Two things stood out on the vendor pages. One page title now reads Chargify is now Maxio, so if your team still calls it Chargify, it's the same billing platform under a new name, with dunning still built in. And Churnkey's page leads with keep more of the revenue you run through Stripe, which tells you how it works: it sits on top of Stripe rather than replacing your billing.
Butter Payments pitches itself as solving involuntary churn, and Paddle lists dunning management software in its own menu. The category has split into recovery specialists and billing platforms that treat recovery as one feature among many.
Stand-alone recovery tool or dunning built into billing?
- Stand-alone recovery. A specialist plugs into Stripe or your billing system and takes over retries, emails and in-app messages. It's the route when your native dunning is basic and failed payments are a big share of churn.
- Built into billing. Your billing platform retries cards and sends reminders as part of the subscription. That's one less vendor, though the retry logic is often simpler.
- Recovery plus cancel flows. Several specialists now pair failed payment recovery with cancel flows, so you tackle both kinds of churn in one place.
What good dunning does, step by step
- Catches the card before it fails, with a reminder when it's about to expire.
- Retries at smarter times instead of on a fixed schedule; one vendor here calls these precision retries for optimal recovery.
- Messages the customer on more than one channel, such as email, SMS and in-app, with a one-click link to update the card.
- Pauses or downgrades rather than cancels when recovery fails, so the customer can come back easily.
- Reports what it recovered, so you can see the result in your own metrics.
Dunning is one part of keeping customers. My guide to automation that reduces customer churn covers the rest.

My plain advice on choosing dunning software
Check what your billing system already does before you buy anything. Switch on its retries and reminder emails, then measure how many failed payments it recovers over a couple of billing cycles. If that number disappoints and failed payments are a big slice of your churn, trial a specialist on top. Several plug into Stripe or your billing platform without a migration.
And write the emails as if a person sent them. My churn save email swipe file has ready-made wording you can adapt.

Frequently asked questions
What is dunning?
Dunning is the process of contacting customers about failed or overdue payments and retrying the charge. In subscriptions it's mostly automated: retries, reminder emails and a link to update card details.
What is involuntary churn?
It's when a customer stops being a customer because a payment failed, not because they chose to cancel. Expired cards and bank declines are the usual causes.
Does Stripe have dunning built in?
Stripe has its own retries and reminder emails. Several tools on this list sit on top of Stripe to add smarter retries, more channels and cancel flows.
What's the difference between dunning and a cancel flow?
Dunning recovers customers whose payment failed. A cancel flow catches customers who click cancel and offers a pause, a discount or a downgrade first.
How do I know if dunning software is working?
Track the share of failed payments that get recovered each month, before and after you switch it on. Several tools here report it for you.
