Best Cabinet Design Software: 10 Options for Shops

The best cabinet design software depends on the size of your shop: a cut list optimiser suits hobby woodworkers, a design and quoting tool suits custom kitchen and closet makers, and a design-to-manufacture suite suits production shops with CNC machines. Ten options follow in no particular order.

A cabinet shop lives and dies by its numbers on the sheet: how many panels, how much waste, how many mistakes caught before the saw starts. Good design software protects all three.

The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, from simple cutting diagram apps to suites that drive CNC machines. Every description comes from the maker's own site, read this week. If you also design whole rooms for clients, my look at kitchen design trends is a useful companion.

Cabinet design software at a glance

In the free plan column, Yes means the tool's own site names a free plan, a free version, a free app or an open source edition. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it.

Software can't assess your workshop

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) starts its woodworking guidance with how to make an assessment of your workshop, before moving on to managing woodworking safely. Better software cuts mistakes and waste, but the machines it sends work to still need that assessment.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

When you add CNC or new machinery alongside new software, update your risk assessment and training at the same time.

Cut lists, sales drawings or full CNC production?

Cut list tools focus on getting the most out of every sheet and board. Design and sales tools focus on quick 3D views, shop drawings and quotes for clients. Design-to-manufacture suites connect design straight to CNC machines, with parts, labels and machining handled automatically. Ordering platforms let your customers configure and order components themselves.

Most shops grow through these stages, so think about which one you'll be in two years from now.

Questions to ask in a demo

  1. Does it output to your CNC machine without a separate program?
  2. Can you set your own construction methods and hardware rules?
  3. How quickly can you turn a client sketch into a 3D view?
  4. What does the cut list and material report look like?
  5. Does it handle closets, furniture and commercial casework as well as kitchens?
  6. What training and support come with it?

Features that earn their place in the workshop

  • Construction rules. Your joinery and hardware built into every box.
  • Panel optimisation. Less waste on every sheet.
  • Labels and reports. Parts reach the right cabinet first time.
  • Client views. 3D images that help close the job.

Signs it's time to upgrade

If you're drawing by hand, re-entering dimensions into a cut list and finding errors at assembly, software will save you time on every job. If you've already got design software but you're still typing parts into a CNC program, look at tools that connect the two.

Do you make cabinet design software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on choosing cabinet design software

Buy for the way you build, not the way the demo builds. Ask each vendor to draw one of your real jobs with your joinery, your materials and your hardware. If they can't, your team will spend months fighting the software.

And don't skip the training. The shops that get the most from these tools are the ones that set aside time to learn them before the busy season. My piece on how good furniture lifts productivity is a nice reminder of why your clients care about the finished result.

Frequently asked questions

What is cabinet design software?

It's software for designing cabinets, closets and furniture, producing drawings, cut lists and often files for CNC machines.

Is there free cabinet design software?

None of the tools on this list named a free plan on the pages I read. Several offer free trials, so check the table.

Can cabinet design software create cut lists?

Yes. Most tools here produce cut lists or panel layouts, and some optimise them to reduce waste.

Do I need CNC to use cabinet design software?

No. Many shops use these tools for drawings and cut lists with traditional machinery, then add CNC later.

What's the difference between kitchen design and cabinet design software?

Kitchen design tools focus on showing clients a room. Cabinet design tools focus on building the boxes, with construction details and cut lists.

Can I design closets and furniture too?

Many tools on this list handle closets, furniture and commercial casework as well as kitchens. Check the good for column.
