Best AI Tools for Artists (2026): 10 That Help or Protect

AI tools for artists fall into two groups: tools that help with the work, such as colour palettes, concept mixing, upscaling for prints and sketch renders, and tools that protect finished art from being copied or used for AI training. Most artists need one or two of each. Ten options follow, in no particular order.

Plenty of artists don't want AI anywhere near their work, and plenty of others use it every day for the dull jobs. Both groups have useful tools, and some of the most downloaded ones exist to protect art from AI rather than make it.

The ten tools below cover concept work, colour, upscaling, background removal, renders and protection. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. If you're also growing an audience for your work, my guide to hashtags for artists on Instagram covers that side.

AI tools for artists at a glance

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Ten AI tools for artists to try

Artbreeder

Best for: Concept artists who want to mix, branch and edit images into new ideas, with a community of creators to follow and share with.

Cara

Best for: Illustrators who want a portfolio and social platform built by artists, which wants AI-generated content clearly labelled.

Glaze

Best for: Anyone posting art online who wants their images altered so models fine-tuned on them find it harder to copy their style.

Khroma

Best for: Painters and illustrators who want to train an algorithm on colours they like, then browse palettes as type, gradients and images.

Krea

Best for: Digital artists who want image generation, an enhancer and video models from several providers in one workspace for quick concept work.

Let's Enhance

Best for: Print sellers who need a scan or digital file upscaled, sharpened or restored before it goes to a large print size.

Nightshade

Best for: Creators who want images posted online to work as poison samples, so models trained on them without consent learn unpredictable behaviour.

remove.bg

Best for: Makers of mockups, stickers or shop listings who want a background removed automatically from a photo of their work.

Topaz Gigapixel

Best for: Photographers and digital painters who want desktop upscaling on Mac or Windows that keeps detail close to the original image.

Vizcom

Best for: Concept and product artists who want rough sketches turned into full-fidelity renders and quick colour and form variations.

Pick a tool by what you need

  • Protecting your style from mimicry: Glaze.
  • Discouraging unlicensed training: Nightshade.
  • A portfolio away from AI images: Cara.
  • Enlarging art for prints: Let's Enhance or Topaz Gigapixel.
  • Turning sketches into renders: Vizcom.
  • Colour ideas that match your taste: Khroma.

The U.S. Copyright Office has published a multi-part report on Copyright and Artificial Intelligence. Part 2 addresses the copyrightability of outputs created using generative AI.

Here's why that matters for artists: if you blend AI-generated parts into a piece you plan to register, license or sell, those parts may not be protected the way your own brushwork is. Read Part 2 before you put AI output into commercial work, and keep a record of which parts you made yourself.

Tools that help and tools that protect

Helper tools save time on jobs around the art: picking palettes, mixing concepts, enlarging files for print, removing backgrounds for mockups and turning rough sketches into renders. They're most useful when you stay in charge of the final piece.

Protection tools work differently. They change how your posted images look to AI models, either to make style copying harder or to make unlicensed training less useful. They don't stop someone screenshotting your work, so pair them with watermarks, sensible image sizes and a platform whose rules you agree with.

How to protect art you post online

  1. Post smaller versions of your work, not full-resolution files.
  2. Run a protection tool on images before you upload them.
  3. Add your name or a light watermark where it won't spoil the piece.
  4. Read each platform's terms on AI training before you join.
  5. Keep dated originals and work-in-progress files as proof of authorship.

Questions to ask before you use an AI tool on your art

  • Does the tool keep or reuse what I upload?
  • Can I export at the size and format my printer needs?
  • Will buyers or clients care that I used it?
  • Does it help my process, or replace the part I enjoy?
  • Can I still say the finished piece is mine?

Illustrators, painters and digital artists use AI differently

Illustrators often lean on colour and render helpers during concept stages, then finish by hand. Painters and printmakers mostly need upscaling for prints and protection for images they post. Digital artists may use generation tools for references or backgrounds, and should keep the line between reference and finished work clear. For colour theory you can use with any tool, my piece on colour harmony inspired by nature is a good companion.

Signs a tool isn't right for you

  • It changes your style. Use it earlier in the process or drop it.
  • Prints come out soft. Try a different upscaler.
  • The terms let it reuse uploads. Don't upload finished work.
  • Buyers ask awkward questions. Explain your process upfront.

My plain advice on AI tools for artists

Decide where your line is before you pick a tool. If you'd rather keep AI out of the art itself, start with the protection tools and the upscalers, which help your work travel without changing what you made.

If you do use AI for concepts or references, be open about it with clients and buyers. Most people care less about the tool than about honesty, and a clear note about your process protects your reputation along with your work.

For street art and lettering styles, AI graffiti generators compares tools that generate them.

Frequently asked questions

What AI tools do artists use?

Common choices include colour palette tools, concept mixing tools, upscalers for prints, background removers, sketch-to-render tools and tools that protect art from AI training.

How can I protect my art from AI?

Use a protection tool on images before posting, share smaller files, watermark where sensible and read each platform's AI training terms.

Do style protection tools stop people copying my work?

They make style copying by AI models harder. They don't stop screenshots, so combine them with other habits.

Can I copyright art made with AI?

The U.S. Copyright Office's AI report covers this in Part 2. Human authorship matters, so keep records of what you made yourself.

Is it okay to use AI for reference images?

Many artists do. Keep references separate from finished work and be open with clients about your process.

Which AI tools help with selling prints?

Upscalers help enlarge files for bigger prints, and background removers help with mockups and shop listings.
