Design Color Harmony Inspired By Nature

For decades, designers have used nature as inspiration while creating certain color harmonies that are both pleasing to the eye and calming to the psyche. Let’s delve a little deeper into this aspect and look at how various design color harmonies have been directly influenced and inspired by nature.

Flowers and the Psyche

There’s a reason why keeping flowers in and around the house and workplace acts as an instant mood uplifter. This is because even though man is considerably cut off from nature while living inside a building in a city, the mind still associates the presence of a flower with nature, thereby making one feel the same calmness and positivity one would experience while taking a hike through the woods even though you’re probably in your office or sitting room. Studies have proven that humans have a tendency to relax when present in nature and natural surroundings, and flowers help activate the endorphins causing one to feel happy and calm.

Naturally, many designers have gone the extra mile by incorporating color palettes commonly found in nature in the interior design of the room to make the overall visual appearance of the room pleasing and calming. For example, while using flowers as an inspiration for the color harmony, designers tend to use warm colors such as red, yellow, and cream when designing the aesthetics of the room. This way, a natural floral appeal is incorporated that subconsciously makes one feel warmth, comfort, and relaxation, the same emotions created in the presence of flowers.

If you’ve never had flowers at home and would like to see if this works for yourself, use this site which caters to online rose delivery, and see if you feel a shift in your emotions and mindset when surrounded by blooming roses.

Blues Skies and Trees

Another common color harmony inspired by nature that designers incorporate are cool hued colors that represent aspects of nature like the skies and trees. This color palette generally includes colors like blue, green, violet, purple, and blue-green. Hence, some rooms that receive a lot of light and have large windows are generally designed to incorporate cool-hued elements. Another aspect to remember is that while flowers go well with warm-hued rooms, plants and greenery go better with cool hued rooms. This is mostly because the green present in plants is more likely to suit the overall aesthetic of a cool hued room.

Just as flowers have the power to make a person feel a certain way when surrounded by them, plants also play a similar role by making the individual feel similar emotions such as relief from stress and anxiety and create a generally soothing atmosphere. Typical of their colors, warm-hued rooms tend to make people feel happy and cheerful, just as how they would feel when surrounded by flowers, while cool hued rooms help them feel relaxed and positive, just as one would feel when basking in the sun under clear blue skies.

The incorporation of these two color harmonies in the design of a room usually occurs in choosing the wall color, furniture, flooring, and the carpet and curtain color. All the colors of various objects in the room are selected in such a way that they mutually complement each other while not being the same shade repeated everywhere.

Conclusion

Here’s a summary of how design color harmony is inspired by nature:

  • A room’s aesthetic may derive inspiration from the warm tones usually found in flowers such as red, pink, orange, yellow, and cream. These colors create an ambiance of happiness and serenity, as they are meant to recreate the same experience one would feel when surrounded by flowers.
  • Similarly, a room may have cool hued tones that derive inspiration from the sky and greenery present in nature. This helps create an atmosphere of relaxation and calmness.
