Best AI Tax Software (2026): 9 Tools Compared

AI tax software uses AI to research tax questions, prepare and check returns, find deductions or handle sales tax compliance. Some tools are for tax professionals and firms, others are filing services for freelancers and small business owners, and one covers sales tax for online sellers. Nine options follow in no particular order.

Tax work is mostly reading: rules, receipts, the previous return, the latest rule changes. That's exactly the kind of work AI has got good at.

The nine tools below put it to use. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you're self-employed and doing your own return, my tax tips for the self-employed are a good companion.

AI tax software at a glance

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free plan, a free version, a free account, a free edition, a free tool or an open source release. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Matching AI tax software to who does the work

  • Freelancers who want deductions found: FlyFin or Keeper.
  • Tax research with cited answers: Blue J, Bizora or TaxGPT.
  • Firms automating individual returns: Black Ore.
  • Preparing and checking business returns: Filed.
  • Planning across several entity types: Instead.
  • Online sellers with sales tax: Kintsugi.

Who signs your return matters more than the software

The Internal Revenue Service says anyone can prepare tax returns for others as long as they have an IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN), and that preparers have differing levels of skills, education and expertise.

AI can read documents, suggest deductions and check a return for mistakes. When a person signs it for you, though, check their credentials too, because a PTIN on its own isn't a qualification. The IRS keeps a directory of preparers with recognised credentials.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Research assistant, preparation tool or filing service?

A research assistant answers tax questions with references, for professionals who still make the call.

A preparation tool drafts returns inside a firm's workflow, with review before sign-off.

A filing service does the job for you, often pairing AI with human accountants, which is the shape most freelancers want.

Questions to ask before AI touches your taxes

  1. Does it cite the rule behind each answer?
  2. Who reviews the return before it's filed?
  3. Which forms and entity types does it cover?
  4. How is your financial data stored and protected?
  5. Does it work with your accounting or tax software?
  6. What happens if the tax office asks questions later?

Signs your tax work could use AI

  • Receipts pile up until year end. Track them all year.
  • Research questions eat billable hours. Get cited answers.
  • Returns need a second pair of eyes. Add automated review.
  • Sales tax rules confuse you. Automate compliance.

My plain advice on AI tax software

Treat AI tax answers like advice from a bright junior: useful, fast and worth checking. Ask it to show the rule it's relying on, then read that rule yourself or put it in front of your accountant before you act.

Wondering when to bring in a professional? My piece on hiring a CPA or filing yourself walks through the choice.
