Angry Birds Offline: Which Angry Birds Games Work Without Wifi?

Some do, some don't say. Of Rovio's current Angry Birds games on Google Play, three listings mention offline play: Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds Blast and Angry Birds Match. Angry Birds 2 needs a one-time download on first launch that can't happen offline, so set it up at home first.

Angry Birds is one of the most famous offline phone games ever made, so it surprises people that the current Angry Birds games don't all work without internet. Rovio, the developer, now has a whole family of them on Google Play, from the classic slingshot style to match-3 puzzles and bubble shooters. Only some of their listings mention offline play at all.

I read every Rovio listing I could find on Google Play. Here's what each one says, or doesn't say, about playing with no connection, in no particular order.

Three listings mention offline play: Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds Blast and Angry Birds Match. The other five say nothing. Silence doesn't mean a game won't run offline, but it means you're relying on luck rather than Rovio's word.

The Rovio games, one at a time

Angry Birds 2

The main slingshot game. Its listing is the most honest of the lot: some features work offline, some need internet, and the first launch downloads extra content that can't be done offline.

Angry Birds Blast

A tap-to-pop puzzle game rather than a slingshot one. The listing promises play any time, any place, even offline.

Angry Birds Match

A match-3 puzzle game whose listing says no wifi is needed and no ads. Google Play shows no Contains ads label for it.

Angry Birds Friends

Rovio pitches this as the place to play the original slingshot game, describing authentic 2009 gameplay. Its listing makes no offline promise, though, so test it before a trip.

Angry Birds Dream Blast

A bubble-popping puzzle game with team features. The listing talks about connecting with friends, and says nothing about offline play.

Angry Birds Journey

A newer, gentler slingshot game. No offline wording on the listing, so test it before a trip.

Angry Birds POP Bubble Shooter

A bubble shooter with the birds. Nothing on the listing either way about playing without internet.

Bad Piggies

The pigs' own vehicle-building game, with more than 100M installs. Again, no offline wording on the listing.

Angry Birds 2 offline: the one-time download

This detail is worth its own section because it catches so many parents out. The Angry Birds 2 listing notes that when the game is played for the first time, there's a one-time download of additional content that can't be completed while offline. If you install it in the car park at the airport and open it on the plane, it won't get past that step. Install it at home, open it on wifi and let the download finish.

After that, the listing says some features are available offline while others may need internet. In practice, expect the levels to play and the events, clans and tournaments to wait for a connection.

Getting an Angry Birds game ready for a journey

  1. Pick one of the three games that mention offline play if offline is the priority.
  2. Install and open it on home wifi, and let any first-time download finish.
  3. Play a level, then turn on airplane mode and play another.
  4. Turn off in-app purchases in your phone's settings if a child will be playing.
  5. Charge the phone. Slingshot games are addictive and the battery drains faster than you'd think.

Ads and in-app purchases in Angry Birds

Every game on this list shows in-app purchases on Google Play, and every one except Angry Birds Match shows the Contains ads label. Match's own listing also says no ads. For a young child on a long journey, that makes Angry Birds Match the calmest choice of the three offline-friendly ones, even though it's a puzzle game rather than a slingshot game. If you specifically want a no-ads game list, have a look at offline games for kids with no ads.

Why the original Angry Birds isn't on this list

Many people remember the first Angry Birds as the perfect offline game. The games Rovio lists on Google Play today are the newer titles shown above, so that's what this page covers. If you're hunting for the old slingshot feeling with no internet, Angry Birds 2 is the closest, as long as you've done the first download at home.

If you like the physics more than the birds

Part of the appeal is the physics: things toppling, bouncing and collapsing. If that's what your family enjoys, physics-heavy parkour games offer a similar kind of satisfying chaos. And for anything you download, here's how to test any game in airplane mode before you set off.

My take on Angry Birds offline

If you want Angry Birds on a plane, go with one of the three games whose listings mention offline play, and set it up at home. Angry Birds 2 needs that first download done on wifi. Angry Birds Blast and Angry Birds Match are the most straightforward offline picks, and Match is the only one without the ads label. The others may well work, but their listings don't say so, so test before you rely on them.
