There's no single Airbnb cancellation policy for homes: each host sets one for their listing, and your refund depends on that policy and when you cancel. You'll find it on the listing under Things to know, again when you confirm and pay, and in your confirmation email.
Here's the catch most guests miss. The policy that applies to your stay is based on your check-in date, not how many nights you book, and hosts can set different policies for specific dates. So the same home can carry a stricter policy over one weekend than another. Change your check-in date and a different policy may apply. Change only the checkout date and the policy stays as it was.
How to find a host's cancellation policy before you book
- Click the listing you want to check.
- Go to Things to know.
- Under Cancellation policy, see whether there's a free cancellation period.
- Click Show more for the details of what's refunded if you cancel.
For a reservation you've already confirmed, click Menu, then Trips, select the reservation, click Your stay and go to Cancellation policy under Reservation details. Click Read more for the full wording.
Homes vs services and experiences
| Booking type | Free cancellation, as of October 2026 | After that |
|---|---|---|
| Home with a fully refundable policy | Until the deadline shown on your reservation | Depends on the host's policy |
| Home with a partly refundable or non-refundable policy | Not available after certain dates | Partial refund or none |
| Most services and experiences | Until 24 hours before the start time, in local time | No refund, with limited exceptions |
| Some services and experiences | Until 72 hours before the start time | No refund, with limited exceptions |
For homes, deadlines run on the listing's local check-in time, or 3:00 PM if the host hasn't set one. That matters if you're booking in another time zone.
Three details that change your refund
- Your refund amount can change as your check-in date gets closer. If you don't cancel straight away, check the amount again before you do.
- On certain homes, eligible guests can pay more for the reservation to stretch free cancellation to 24 hours before check-in. That extra goes to Airbnb, not the host.
- The amount refunded will never be more than you've already paid at the point you cancel.
How to cancel a home reservation
- Click Menu, then Trips, and select the reservation.
- Click Your stay.
- Under Reservation details, click Cancel reservation.
- Choose a reason and click Continue.
- Write a message about why you're cancelling and click Continue.
- Click Cancel reservation.
Two things people forget. If you've booked services at the home, cancelling the stay doesn't cancel them, so you'll need to cancel those separately or sort it with the service host. And if you cancel after check-in, you're expected to leave the property right away.
How to cancel a service or experience
Click Trips, select the reservation, click Cancel reservation under Reservation details, choose a reason, click Continue and then Cancel reservation. You can review any refund before you finalise, and you may be able to reschedule instead. If you're eligible, the refund arrives within 10 business days. Cancel outside the free window and there's no refund, unless your case is covered by Airbnb's guest cancellation policy for services and experiences or the host agrees to refund you in full.
How to see your refund amount
Before cancelling, go to Menu, then Trips, choose the reservation, click Your stay and click Cancel reservation under Reservation details. You'll see a detailed breakdown before you confirm. After cancelling, go to Menu, then Account settings, then Payments, click Manage payments, pick the cancelled trip showing Refund sent and open Details under Refund status. The cancellation confirmation email shows it too.
Airbnb starts eligible refunds as soon as you cancel. How quickly it shows up depends on your bank. Refunds follow the policy that applies at the moment you cancel, which is why the breakdown on the day matters more than what you saw when you booked.
When you can get back more than the policy says
You may be entitled to a full refund, or a bigger one than the host's policy allows, if you have to cancel because of a major disruptive event, or if something goes wrong during your stay that's covered by Airbnb's Rebooking and Refund Policy. If the host cancels on you, you get a full refund and help finding a similar place, whatever the policy says. For problems during a stay, ask the host first for a fix, a partial refund or a cancellation with a full refund. If they can't sort it, don't reply or say no, tap Get Help on your reservation page.

My verdict on Airbnb cancellations
I'd read the cancellation policy for your exact dates before you pay, not the listing in general, because hosts can change it date by date. If your plans are shaky, book a listing with a fully refundable policy and note the deadline in your calendar, remembering it runs on the listing's local time. And if you do need to cancel, open the cancellation screen first just to see the breakdown, then decide. It costs nothing to look.
