Which AI Powered Marketing Tools Are Worth Using For Your Business

The short version: Most AI marketing tools you’ve bookmarked won’t move your business forward, but a handful will save you real hours and real money if you pick them for a specific job rather than because they’re trending. I use maybe six tools daily, pay for four, and the rest of the “must have AI stack” content you’ve read is mostly affiliate link padding.

The problem isn’t the tools, it’s how people choose them

I get asked “what AI tools should I be using” at least once a week, usually by someone who’s already spent £200 a month across four different subscriptions and can’t tell me what any of them do for their business. That’s the pattern I see constantly: people collect tools like they’re building a trading card set instead of solving one problem at a time.

Here’s what nobody tells you in the “50 best AI marketing tools” listicles: the tool market is flooded with wrappers. Dozens of “AI marketing platforms” are just a ChatGPT API call with a nicer interface and a £49 a month price tag bolted on. If you know how to write a decent prompt yourself, you’re paying for convenience, not capability. That’s fine if the convenience is worth it to you. It’s not fine if you don’t know that’s what you’re buying.

What I use, and what it costs

I run a small consultancy, not a corporation, so everything below is tested on a real budget with real deadlines, not a hypothetical enterprise use case.

  • Content drafting: I use Claude and ChatGPT Plus (£20/month each, though I mostly need one) for first drafts, outline structuring, and rewriting client emails that need a firmer tone. Neither replaces my voice. Both save me the 45 minutes I used to spend staring at a blank page before lunch. If you want a proper breakdown of what’s worth paying for here, I wrote a longer piece on the best AI assisted writing tools for small business owners that goes into specific pricing tiers.
  • Ad creation and testing: Meta’s own Advantage+ AI tools inside Ads Manager are free and useful for generating ad copy variations and testing audiences without hiring a media buyer for a £2,000 retainer. I’ve written separately about what makes a Facebook ads tool worth using for beginners, because most people overcomplicate this step badly.
  • Customer service: Intercom’s Fin AI agent handles roughly 50 percent of a small business’s repeat questions (refund status, shipping times, “where’s my invoice”) without a human touching it, according to Intercom’s own published resolution data. I’ve tested it with a client who runs an online course business, it cut their first response time from four hours to under two minutes. Before you buy any AI support tool, read what I look for in an AI powered customer service platform, because the pricing models on these tools are deliberately confusing.
  • Interactive content: Quizzes, calculators, and assessment tools built with AI assistance convert better than static lead magnets in almost every test I’ve run, sometimes double the opt in rate. If you’re building your first one, I put together a guide on picking interactive content creation software that covers the traps most beginners fall into with pricing tiers that punish you for growing.
  • Research and general productivity: Perplexity for fact checking and competitive research, £20/month, has replaced probably six hours a week I used to spend manually googling and cross referencing. If you want the wider picture on this, I’ve broken down how AI powered productivity tools save hours each week, not just minutes, which matters because most people measure the wrong thing when they judge whether a tool is “worth it.”

The uncomfortable bit nobody wants to say out loud

Here’s the truth that most marketing content on this topic tiptoes around: AI tools make average marketers produce more average content, faster. If your emails were bland before, AI will help you send bland emails at three times the volume. I’ve seen it happen to a client, a lovely woman running a boutique skincare brand, who switched to an AI writing tool for her newsletter and watched her open rate drop from 31 percent to 19 percent in two months, because the content stopped sounding like her and started sounding like everyone else using the same tool with the same default prompts.

The tools amplify whatever’s already there. If your strategy is sharp, AI makes it sharper and faster. If your strategy is thin, AI just helps you scale the thinness. Nobody selling you a £99/month subscription wants to tell you that the tool is not the bottleneck, you are.

A simple way to decide if a tool is worth paying for

I use a three question test before I add anything to my stack, and I’d recommend you steal it:

  • Does it save me more than two hours a week? If a £30/month tool saves two hours and my time is worth £75 an hour (a conservative rate for most business owners), that’s a clear win. If it saves 20 minutes, it’s not.
  • Would I miss it if it disappeared tomorrow? Be honest. Half the tools in most people’s stack could vanish and nobody would notice for a fortnight.
  • Can I explain what it does in one sentence to a friend who isn’t in marketing? If you can’t, you probably bought it because of a slick demo video, not because it solves a problem you can name.

I run this test on my own stack every three months. Last quarter I dropped two tools this way, a social scheduling app with an “AI caption generator” bolted on that I never used, and a separate SEO tool that duplicated something Perplexity already did better. That’s £70 a month back in my pocket for tools I wasn’t touching.

What I’d tell a business owner starting from scratch

Don’t build a stack. Solve one bottleneck first. If your bottleneck is content, start there. If it’s customer response times, start there. Pick one tool, use it for a month, measure the actual time or money it saved, then decide if you need a second one. Most people do the opposite, they subscribe to six tools in a single afternoon after reading a “best of” roundup, use none of them, and conclude “AI doesn’t work for my business,” when really they never gave any single tool room to prove itself.

If you’d rather not run this trial and error yourself, working through it with someone who’s already made the expensive mistakes is often faster. I take clients through exactly this process, tool by tool, budget by budget, and you can see how that works on my AI consultant for small business page.

One more thing worth saying plainly: none of this replaces the developer or technical side of your business if you’re building anything custom. If your team needs tools that speed up build time rather than marketing output, that’s a separate conversation, and I’ve covered the developer productivity tools worth paying for in 2026 for exactly that audience.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the single best AI marketing tool for a small business with no budget?

Meta’s Advantage+ ad tools and ChatGPT’s free tier will cover most of what a bootstrapped business needs for ad copy and content drafting, before you spend a penny on paid tools.

How much should a small business budget for AI marketing tools each month?

Between £50 and £150 a month is realistic for one or two owners using AI, covering one writing tool, one research or customer service tool, and skipping the rest until you’ve maxed those out.

Do AI marketing tools save money compared to hiring staff?

For repetitive, high volume tasks like first response customer queries or first draft content, yes, an AI tool can do in minutes what would take a part time hire hours, but it doesn’t replace strategy, judgement, or a human checking the output before it goes out.

What’s the biggest mistake businesses make when adopting AI marketing tools?

Buying several tools at once instead of testing one for a month, which means most businesses never find out which tools work for them before moving on to the next trend.
