Use Google AI Mode when you want to research something on the web and see sources: it's AI inside Google Search, built from many searches with links to explore. Use Gemini when you want an assistant to write, create, work with your own files and apps, or carry out tasks for you. They share Google's models, but AI Mode is a search tool and Gemini is a personal assistant.
Google keeps putting Gemini models into Search and search features into Gemini, so the line looks blurry. It isn't, once you look at what each one's for. Here's the comparison from Google's own help pages, and the simple rule I use.
Side by side
| Google AI Mode | Gemini | |
|---|---|---|
| What each one is | AI-powered answers inside Google Search | Google's personal AI assistant |
| How it answers | Query fan-out: splits your question into subtopics and searches each at once | Chat with Gemini models, plus tools like Canvas and Gems |
| Links to the web | Built in; sometimes shows only links if it isn't confident | Research tasks can come back with cited sources |
| Your own content | Upload images, PDFs and Drive files, or paste a URL | Files, photos, screens, Connected Apps and imported chats |
| Doing things for you | Research and comparisons | Tasks and schedules that run for you |
| Where you find it | google.com and the Google app | gemini.google.com and the Gemini apps |
How AI Mode works
Google's help page explains AI Mode's method: it divides your question into subtopics and searches for each one at the same time across several data sources, then brings the results together into one answer. You can follow up in the Ask anything bar and ask by text, voice, images, PDFs and other files, or by pasting a web page address. On Chrome you can add open tabs to your question too.
Two details matter. First, Google says that in some cases AI Mode gives you a set of web links instead of an answer when it isn't confident enough in the AI response. Second, Gemini 4 Argon is available in AI Mode for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers aged 18 and over in selected countries, with daily usage limits.

What Gemini does that AI Mode doesn't
- Gems and Skills: saved instructions so Gemini works the way you want each time.
- Connected Apps, including Google services and third-party tools through Model Context Protocol servers.
- Gemini Live: spoken conversations where you can share video or your screen.
- Canvas: documents and simple web apps you build and edit in the chat.
- Importing memory or chats from other AI platforms.
- Tasks: multi-step jobs and schedules Gemini works through for you, on Google AI Pro or Ultra.
Those come from Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, which lists every kind of data Gemini handles, and they're a good map of what the assistant can do.
Personalisation works differently
Both can tailor answers to you, from different places. AI Mode's Personal Intelligence uses your previous searches and activity saved in your Search history, and needs you to be 18 or over with history and personalised recommendations switched on; you can also connect Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Photos. Gemini uses your past chats, saved instructions and Connected Apps, controlled by its Keep Activity setting.
Which to use for common jobs
| Job | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Compare three suppliers or products | AI Mode | You want sources and current web results |
| Plan a trip or local visit | AI Mode | It searches lots of angles at once |
| Write a newsletter or proposal | Gemini | It's a writing job, not a search |
| Summarise your own documents | Gemini | It works with your files and apps |
| Build a recurring weekly report | Gemini | Tasks and schedules run for you |
| Check a fact before you publish | AI Mode | Click through to the sources |
Privacy and history
AI Mode keeps your questions in AI Mode history so you can pick up where you left off, and Google recommends turning on history and personalised recommendations for the best experience. On Workspace accounts where Search and Assistant are turned off, only an administrator can enable Search history. Gemini has its own controls: the Keep Activity setting, temporary chats, and separate choices about whether your audio and Gemini Live video and screen shares are used to improve Google's services. In the European Economic Area and Switzerland, Gemini is provided by Google Ireland Limited.
The rule I use
If the answer lives on the web, start in AI Mode. If the answer depends on your own work, your files or a job that needs doing, start in Gemini. And with either one, Google's own advice applies: AI responses may include mistakes, so click the sources for anything that matters.

My verdict
You don't have to pick one. Use AI Mode as your research tool and Gemini as your assistant, and you'll get more from both. If you only have time to learn one this week, learn Gemini, because it does the work; AI Mode just helps you find things.
