In Indonesia, Google's payment table offers AdSense publishers three routes: EFT in rupiah with a test deposit, wire transfer and check. Hyperwallet is unavailable. The payment threshold is 1,300,000 rupiah, and payments are issued between the 21st and 26th of the month.
Indonesian publishers are in the luckiest group when it comes to AdSense, because Google's table gives them three ways to be paid rather than one or two. The decision then becomes which of the three suits your bank and your patience. I've read Google's help pages for Indonesia so you can see what each route involves before you set one up.
Three routes on Google's list for Indonesia
Google's payment-method table lists Indonesia for AdSense with check yes, EFT yes and wire transfer yes. Hyperwallet is marked no. For AdSense for YouTube the same pattern applies: check, EFT and wire are all yes, Hyperwallet no. Website owners and YouTubers in Indonesia therefore have the same menu.
Of the three, EFT is the one aimed at everyday local use. Google's EFT page describes it as a direct deposit of your earnings into your bank account in your local currency, which for Indonesia means the Indonesian rupiah.
Setting up EFT in rupiah, with a test deposit
Unlike South Africa, Indonesia is listed with a test deposit required. You give Google your bank account details, and Google sends a small test deposit that you use to verify the account. The help page doesn't say how long verification takes, so build in a little time before your first payment cycle.
Google's EFT page also warns that if you set EFT as your payment method after the 20th of the month, payment by EFT that month may not go out. If you're setting it up for the first time, start early in the month.
| What I checked | What Google says for Indonesia |
|---|---|
| EFT | Yes, in Indonesian rupiah, test deposit required |
| Wire transfer | Yes |
| Check | Yes |
| Hyperwallet | No |
| Threshold to select a method | 130,000 rupiah |
| Payment threshold | 1,300,000 rupiah |
The threshold figures on your Payments page
Google's thresholds page lists Indonesian rupiah figures of 130,000 for payment method selection, 1,300,000 for payment and 130,000 for cancelation. You choose a method once you reach the first figure, and money is only paid once outstanding earnings reach the second and the account has no holds.
Identity verification has a threshold of 0 dollars, so you verify before your account can show ads or receive payments, and address verification stays at 10 dollars or the local equivalent.
How long an EFT takes, and what happens if it bounces
Google's payments FAQ says that for EFT you should allow 4-10 days to receive the funds once the payment process has begun. Its payment timelines page gives up to seven business days after issue. Payments are issued between the 21st and 26th of the month, so the money can land in the following days.
If your bank account has recently been closed, the FAQ says an EFT is returned automatically within a few days, the earnings go back to your balance, and once you've verified a new bank account the payment is reissued. Google estimates the whole process at about a week. You also can't change your payment currency, so there's no switching to dollars to dodge conversion.
Wire or check instead of EFT
Both are on Indonesia's list. A wire is issued in US dollars or euros, depending on your country, and your bank may convert it. Google's wire page says you can't add a bank account that's not based in your country, that it doesn't charge a fee to receive your funds though your bank may, and that a wire can take up to 15 business days. A check takes two to four weeks by post and comes without a tracking number.
For most Indonesian publishers I'd expect EFT to be the first thing to try, since it pays in rupiah, but that's a preference, not a rule. If your bank deals badly with the Google test deposit, the wire is the sensible alternative.

A simple order of work for a new Indonesian account
- Reach the first threshold so you can select a payment method.
- Choose EFT, wire or check, well before the 20th of the month.
- If you chose EFT, watch your bank account for Google's small test deposit and verify it.
- Complete identity verification, then the PIN when it arrives by post.
- Submit tax information if Google asks for it, and keep the confirmation.
Nothing here is difficult on its own. The delays come from doing the steps in the wrong order, or leaving the payment method until the 21st when the cut-off was the 20th.
PIN, tax and the US treaty list
Google mails a unique 6-digit PIN by international standard mail when you reach the verification threshold, with no tracking number. It typically takes about three weeks, you have 4 months from when it's generated to enter it, and 3 wrong entries stop your account showing ads.
Google's tax page says not everyone has to provide tax information, reviews may take up to 7 business days and Google can't give tax advice. The IRS page of United States income tax treaties lists Indonesia with tax treaty documents. Whether that affects you is a question for an Indonesian accountant.
Receiving client money alongside AdSense
Google pays out only what it owes you. If you also have overseas clients, how PayPal works in Indonesia, how Payoneer works in Indonesia and how Wise works in Indonesia explain the usual options. For channel owners, how to update your YouTube payment method in AdSense shows where to change the setting.
