How to Change Your Spotify Password (and Fix a Reset That Fails)

To change your Spotify password, go to Spotify's Change password page, enter your current password, type the new one twice and click Set new password. If you've forgotten it, use the password reset page with the email linked to your account instead.

I went through Spotify's own help page on changing your password as of Nov 2026, and it's refreshingly short. There are two routes, and then a list of things that go wrong. I've laid this out around those problems, because if you're here, there's a decent chance something already hasn't worked.

Start by working out which route you're on. Can you remember the password you use now? Then you're changing it, and the first section is all you need. Can't remember it, but you can open the email inbox linked to Spotify? Then you're resetting it. Can't do either? Jump to the troubleshooting list, because Spotify covers that case too, and the answer's blunter than most people expect.

You know your current password

This is the easy one. Spotify's steps:

  1. Go to the Change password page (Spotify links to it from its password help article).
  2. Enter your current password.
  3. Enter your new password, then enter it again to confirm.
  4. Click Set new password.

Done. Worth knowing: Spotify's help page sends you to that page by link. It doesn't give an in-app menu path, so I won't invent one. If you can't find it in the app, use the web page.

You've forgotten it

Then you're resetting, not changing. Spotify's steps:

  1. Go to the password reset page.
  2. Enter the email address linked to your Spotify account.
  3. Open the reset email and follow the instructions in it.

Simple when it works. The rest of this page is for when it doesn't.

If the reset goes wrong, match your problem here

Spotify's help page lists five specific snags. I've kept each fix to what Spotify says, no more.

The reset email never arrives

Check your spam or junk folder, plus any other filtered folders your email app uses. That's Spotify's first suggestion, and in my view it's the one most people skip. Promotions and updates tabs count as filtered folders too, so look there.

You can't get into the email account any more

Spotify gives two options. Try to regain access to the old email account first. If that's a dead end, the page says you can create a new Spotify account and start fresh. That's blunt advice, but it's what Spotify says, and I'd rather you heard it straight than hoped for a back door the page doesn't mention.

Spotify says there's no account for that email

You may have signed up another way. Spotify notes that sign-up options include email, phone number, Apple or Google, so try other email addresses you use and try logging in with each of those methods. People often forget they tapped a Google or Apple button years back.

The reset link doesn't work

Request a fresh reset, then open the new link in a private or incognito browser window. That's Spotify's fix, word for word in spirit.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

You get a "too many requests" message

Spotify says to try again later, or use a different device or browser. The help page doesn't say how long "later" is, so I can't give you a number. Stepping away and coming back is the plan.

If your email changed and you didn't change it

That's a different situation. If you think your account email changed without your permission, Spotify's password page points you to its separate "Think your account's been hacked?" article. Go there rather than battling the reset page, because a reset only goes to whatever email is on the account now.

Once you're back in, it's worth tidying up. I've covered signing Spotify out everywhere at once for exactly this kind of moment, and if you want a fresh look while you're at it, there's my guide to changing what your profile is called.

What Spotify's page leaves out

Honesty matters more than a tidy answer, so here's what the official page doesn't cover as of Nov 2026:

  • The exact menu path inside the mobile or desktop app. It only gives web links.
  • Password rules, such as minimum length or required characters.
  • Whether changing your password signs out your other devices.
  • How long to wait after a "too many requests" message.

If you're starting fresh because the old email's gone for good and you'd like the old account closed, read what deleting a Spotify account involves before you do anything drastic. My verdict: try every sign-in method first. Starting again should be the last resort, not the first.

Quick answers

Can I change my Spotify password without the old one?

Not through Change password, which asks for your current one. Use the password reset page and the email linked to your account instead.

Why haven't I got the Spotify reset email?

Spotify says to check spam, junk and any other filtered folders. If the email's still missing, check you used the address linked to the account.

What if the Spotify reset link doesn't work?

Try resetting again, then open the new emailed link in a private or incognito browser.

What if I can't get into my old email any more?

Spotify suggests trying to regain access to that email first. If you can't, its page says you can create a new Spotify account and start fresh.

What does "too many requests" mean on Spotify?

Spotify's advice is to try again later or use a different device or browser. It doesn't say how long to wait.
