Last seen on WhatsApp is the last time someone used the app. If you can't see it, they may have hidden it, you may have hidden yours, or you haven't chatted or saved each other as contacts.
Here's the short version. Last seen is WhatsApp's record of when someone was last active in the app. That's it. It isn't a read receipt, it isn't proof someone's ignoring you, and a missing one isn't proof you've been blocked. I went through WhatsApp's own help pages as of Nov 2026, and everything on this page comes from them, including the bits they leave out.
What last seen tells you, and what it doesn't
WhatsApp's help page on last seen and online puts it in one line: the feature tells you if a user is online and the last time they used WhatsApp. The last seen half is that second part. It's a timestamp of activity, nothing more.
What it can't tell you is what they did while they were there. WhatsApp is clear that even being online only means someone has the app open on their device and is connected to the internet, and that this doesn't mean they've read your message. If being online right now doesn't prove a read, an older last seen time proves even less. Please don't build a story on it.
WhatsApp bundles last seen and online into one setting, which is why the two get muddled. I've covered what Online means on WhatsApp on its own page, so this one sticks to the last seen timestamp: who sees it, why it disappears and how to change it.
One thing to be straight about: the help pages I read don't spell out the exact wording of the labels you'll see next to a contact, or how precisely the timestamp tracks someone's activity. So I won't guess at either.
Who can see your last seen right now
Out of the box, WhatsApp's privacy settings page says your contacts can see when you were last seen on WhatsApp. It also says that users you've saved as a contact, or who you've messaged before, can see your last seen and online, showing when you were last active.
Here's the detail most people miss. Even if you choose Everyone, WhatsApp says only those you've called and messaged before, or saved as a contact, can see it. So Everyone doesn't mean every stranger with your number. It means everyone you've had some contact with.
Your last seen options, side by side
WhatsApp gives you four choices. Each one costs you something, so here's what each does and what you give up, using WhatsApp's own wording.
| Setting | What it does | What you lose |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone | Anyone you've called and messaged before, or saved as a contact, can see your last seen. | The least privacy of the four. Anyone you've chatted with can see when you were last active. |
| My contacts | Only contacts from your address book can see it. | People you've chatted with but never saved won't see it, which is often the point. |
| My contacts except... | Your address-book contacts can see it, except the people you exclude. | Very little. You decide who's left out, one person at a time. |
| Nobody | No one can see your last seen and online. | You can't see anyone else's last seen or online either. |
That last row is the trade WhatsApp builds in. Its help pages say that if you don't share your last seen or online, you can't see other users' last seen or online. It's a two-way deal: you can't hide yours and keep watching theirs.
Why you can't see someone's last seen
This is where most of the worry comes from. WhatsApp lists several ordinary reasons a contact's last seen might be missing:
- You've set your own privacy to not share your last seen, so you can't see other contacts' last seen.
- You haven't chatted with them before or saved them as a contact.
- They've set their privacy settings to hide it.
- They haven't messaged you before or saved you as a contact.
- You both need to resync your contacts.
- There's a temporary connection or network issue. WhatsApp suggests closing and reopening the app to see if that helps.
- You might be blocked.
Notice where blocking sits: it's one reason among many. WhatsApp's page on signs you might be blocked lists a missing last seen or online as one of several indicators, alongside things like not seeing their statuses, no profile photo updates, one gray check mark on messages and calls not going through. WhatsApp also says these could be due to other reasons and that it can't tell you if someone has blocked you.
So my verdict is simple. A missing last seen on its own tells you almost nothing about how someone feels about you. Check your own setting first, because if you've hidden yours, theirs vanishes too. It's an easy one to forget you switched on.

How to change who sees your last seen
On your phone, WhatsApp's steps are:
- Tap the menu icon, then go to Settings > Privacy.
- Tap Last seen and online.
- Choose Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except..., or Nobody.
On WhatsApp's desktop and web versions, the privacy page gives the same route: click Settings > Privacy, click the setting, then click Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except..., or Nobody.
If you'd like the hiding side covered step by step, there's a separate guide on hiding your last seen on WhatsApp. One gap worth knowing: the help pages I read don't say whether hiding your last seen still lets people see you online, so don't assume it does either way.
Is hiding your last seen worth it?
For a lot of people, yes, but pick the setting that matches the problem you've got rather than jumping straight to Nobody.
If the issue is people you barely know keeping tabs on you, My contacts fixes that and you keep seeing everyone else's last seen. If it's one or two specific people, My contacts except... is the neat answer, because you shut them out without changing anything for anyone else.
Nobody is the right call when you want a clean break from people checking when you were last around. Just go in knowing the cost. You'll lose sight of everyone else's last seen and online too. Say you hide yours to stop a colleague reading into your evenings: you'll also stop being able to see when your partner was last active. If you're fine with that, go for it.
And if what's really bothering you is a message that hasn't been answered, the timestamp won't settle it. I've written about what to make of it when WhatsApp shows someone online but they don't reply, which is usually the real question.
Quick answers
Does last seen mean someone read my message?
No. WhatsApp says even being online only means the app is open and connected, not that your message has been read. A last seen time only tells you when they were last active.
If I hide my last seen, can I still see other people's?
No. WhatsApp says that if you don't share your last seen or online, you can't see other users' last seen or online.
Does a missing last seen mean I've been blocked?
Not on its own. WhatsApp lists it as one possible sign, but also lists privacy settings, never chatting or saving each other, resyncing contacts and network issues, and says it can't tell you if someone blocked you.
Can strangers see my last seen if I choose Everyone?
No. WhatsApp says that with Everyone, only people you've called and messaged before, or saved as a contact, can see it.
