Twitch Tax Form in 2026: The Tax Interview, the 30% Withholding and Your Yearly Forms

Every Twitch Affiliate and Partner has to complete Twitch's online tax interviews (a W-9 if you're a U.S. person, a W-8 if you're not), and if you skip them or let them expire, a default withholding tax of up to 30% may apply to your future payments. You do it from the Monetization section of your Creator Dashboard, and you can retake it there without restarting onboarding.

This page walks through Twitch's published process as of November 2026, from its Amazon Tax Information Interview FAQ and its Affiliate Program FAQ, both read on 2 November 2026. It isn't tax advice. Twitch's tax answers run through Amazon's tax system and some may be dated, so read Twitch's own page before you rely on any detail, and talk to a tax adviser about your own situation.

What the Twitch tax interview is, and which version you'll get

Twitch asks Partners, Affiliates and streamers who've finished onboarding and signed the Monetized Streamer Agreement for valid tax identity information. That covers U.S. and non-U.S. creators, and non-profits too. Twitch says it's legally required to collect this from the creators it pays.

There are two interviews, a U.S. Service interview and a Royalty interview, and they collect your details on Form W-9 or Form W-8. Many creators need to complete both. Which form you get depends on where you stand for U.S. tax:

  • U.S. creators fill in a W-9 and give a nine-digit tax ID: a Social Security number, an EIN or an ITIN. You don't enter Twitch's EIN anywhere.
  • Creators outside the U.S. certify non-U.S. status on a W-8 or Form 8233. A tax ID is only needed if you want a reduced rate under a tax treaty. It comes from your local tax authority, and Twitch gives a Canadian Social Insurance Number as an example. If your country doesn't issue one, you'd need a U.S. ITIN (individuals) or EIN (others) to claim treaty benefits.

If you want to understand the non-U.S. form itself, I've broken down what the W-8BEN form is for in its own guide.

What happens if you skip it or let it expire

SituationWhat Twitch says
You don't complete the interviews, or they expireA default withholding tax of up to 30% may apply to future payments until you complete or update them
You're a non-U.S. payeeThe IRS requires Twitch to collect up to 30% from certain payments to non-U.S. persons, deducted automatically
Your answers don't match IRS recordsYour tax information can show as invalid until you retake the interview
You run more than one channelEach channel needs its own onboarding, tax forms included, even on the same email address
Your payout is lower than expectedIt can come down to how the tax interview was filled in

That last row matters. If your money looks short, the tax interview is one of the first places I'd look, alongside the timing rules in how Twitch payouts work.

How to complete or retake the interview

  1. Log in to Twitch and open your Creator Dashboard.
  2. Go to the Monetization section.
  3. Find the tax interview you need, Service or Royalty, and click Retake next to it. You don't need to restart onboarding.
  4. Use your legal name and legal address, exactly as they appear on your official documents. Don't enter made-up or dummy data to get past a field.
  5. Agree to an electronic signature if you're happy to. Twitch can then validate your details in real time and generally process them straight away.
  6. If you'd rather sign on paper, print the W-9 or W-8, sign it in blue or black ink and post it. Twitch says that can take seven to ten business days after it arrives.

Fixing an invalid or failed result

When Twitch flags your tax information as invalid, it's usually a mismatch with IRS records. The common causes it lists:

  • A misspelt name
  • A missing middle name or middle initial
  • A tax ID that doesn't match what the IRS holds

The fix is to retake the interview using the name and number exactly as they appear on your Social Security card, your CP565 notice for an ITIN or your CP575A notice for an EIN. If you're answering for a business, use the name on its formation document. One that trips people up: being a Twitch Partner doesn't make you a partnership. The interview is asking about your legal entity type, not your Twitch status.

Your yearly tax forms and when they arrive

Many creators get two forms because they earned both royalty and service income. The forms are posted to the address you gave during onboarding, or you can get them electronically through Amazon Tax Central, which you connect from the connections page in your Twitch settings. To find them, go to Channel Analytics, open your payout history and click View Tax Forms.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

If you're a U.S. creator wondering how to set money aside during the year, I've written about estimated tax payments, but what you'll owe is a question for your tax adviser.

My verdict

I'd finish both interviews before your first payout and skip guessing at any field. A misspelt name or a missing middle initial is enough to mark your details invalid, and that can mean money held back from payments you've already earned. Copy your details straight from your official documents, say yes to the electronic signature so it's processed immediately, and check the tax interview first whenever a payout looks smaller than it should.

Frequently asked questions

Who has to fill in the Twitch tax interview?

Every Partner, Affiliate and streamer with onboarding complete and a signed Monetized Streamer Agreement. Twitch says it's legally required to collect the information, and that applies to US and non-US creators, including non-profits.

What happens if I don't complete the Twitch tax form?

Twitch says a default withholding tax of up to 30% may apply to your future payments until you complete or update your tax interviews.

Why does Twitch say my tax information is invalid?

The usual causes are a misspelt name, a missing middle name or initial, or a tax ID that doesn't match IRS records. Retake the interview using the name and number exactly as they appear on your official documents.

When do Twitch tax forms come out?

Form 1099 is available on or before 31 January of the following year, and Form 1042-S on or before 15 March. You'll find them in Channel Analytics under payout history, by clicking View Tax Forms.

Do I need a tax ID if I live outside the US?

Only if you want to claim a reduced rate under a tax treaty. Your foreign tax ID comes from your own country's tax authority, and if it doesn't issue one, you'd need a U.S. ITIN or EIN to claim treaty benefits.
