What Is Telegram? (2026) What the App Does and How Businesses Use It

Telegram is a free, cloud-based messaging app that keeps your chats in sync across your phone, tablet and computer at the same time. Telegram says groups can hold up to 200,000 people and channels can broadcast to an unlimited number of subscribers, and that private messaging stays free with no ads.

That's the short version. The longer one matters if you run a business, because Telegram isn't really one thing. It's a chat app, a community platform and a broadcast tool rolled into a single download, and which of those you use decides whether it's worth your time.

Telegram describes itself as a messaging app focused on speed and security, and calls itself super-fast, simple and free. It says it's one of the five most downloaded apps in the world, with over 1 billion active users. Those are Telegram's own figures as of Nov 2026, so treat them as the company's claim rather than an audited count.

How Telegram works: the cloud is the default

Here's the part most people miss. Telegram is cloud-first. Your ordinary chats are stored on Telegram's servers, which is why you can open the app on a laptop and see the same conversation you started on your phone. Telegram says you can log in on as many devices as you like at once with your main mobile number, and messages sync across all of them.

The exception is Secret Chats. Telegram says these use end-to-end encryption and are device-specific, so they live only on the phone or computer where you started them. The FAQ says ordinary cloud chats use server-client encryption instead. So if someone tells you everything on Telegram is end-to-end encrypted, that's not what Telegram itself says. I've covered the details in my guide to how Secret Chats work.

The cloud approach has a practical upside too. Telegram says the app needs less than 100 MB on your device, and that with cache management it can take up close to zero space on your phone, because your chats live in the cloud and you can clear the cache to free space.

What you can do with it

Telegram says you can send messages, photos, videos and files of any type, from documents to zip and mp3 files. It compares itself to SMS and email combined. Files can be up to 2 GB each, or 4 GB with Telegram Premium.

What you want to doTelegram featureLimit Telegram states (as of Nov 2026)

Calls are end-to-end encrypted, Telegram says. Voice chats sit inside groups, and members drop in whenever they like, a bit like an open room rather than a scheduled call.

There's also a set of extras: animated GIF search, a photo editor, an open sticker platform, self-destructing messages, photos and videos in Secret Chats, and a passcode lock for the app itself.

Groups and channels: the split that matters for business

If you're weighing Telegram up for a brand, this is the decision that counts. Telegram has two shapes, and they work in opposite directions.

  • Groups are for conversation. Telegram pitches them at friends, family and collaboration, and at communities of up to 200,000 people. Admins get advanced tools, large groups can turn on Aggressive Anti-Spam, topics split the discussion like a forum, and public groups get a short link anyone can join.
  • Channels are for broadcasting. They have no subscriber cap, and posts appear signed with the channel's name and photo, not yours. Every message carries a view counter that includes forwarded copies, so you can see how far a post travelled.

For a small business, a channel is the closer match to a newsletter: you publish, people read, and nobody's chatting back in the same space. A group is closer to a members' forum, with all the moderation work that brings. If you want to start broadcasting, my walkthrough on setting up a Telegram channel covers the steps.

Usernames: how strangers can reach you

Telegram lets you pick a public username. Telegram says it lets other people find you in global search and message you without knowing your phone number. It's optional, and you can use the letters a to z, numbers 0 to 9 and underscores.

For a business, that's useful and a little risky in equal measure. A username means customers can contact you without you handing out a mobile number. It also means anyone searching can find you. If you'd rather keep a personal account private, don't set one, and give your brand its own channel or group with a public link instead. A brand that wants more than a chat group can look at community platforms for creators.

How Telegram pays its way

Telegram says private chats and groups have no ads, and that private messaging will stay free with no subscription fees. It says it launched ads in 2021, which are minimal and can appear in certain public channels, and a paid Telegram Premium subscription in 2022 that adds extra features such as bigger file uploads.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Telegram also says it doesn't use your data to target ads and doesn't sell it. Cloud chats are stored so you can reach them from any device, and your contacts are kept so you can find people you already know.

Telegram's AI features versus third-party bots

Telegram now has its own AI features. It lists translation, custom tones, AI summaries of long channel posts and AI-powered sticker search, and says these run on a system called Cocoon and send no data to third parties.

The catch is easy to miss. Telegram has an open API and a Bot API, so plenty of bots and mini apps run inside it. Telegram says that if you use AI through a third-party bot or mini app, you're using a third-party service, not Telegram. That bot's privacy rules are its own, so read them before you paste in anything about your customers.

Where it runs and how long it's been around

Telegram says it works on iOS 13.0 and above, Android 5.0 and up, a native macOS app and a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux, plus Telegram Web for quick jobs in a browser. The iOS app launched on 14 August 2013 and the Android alpha followed on 20 October 2013. It's backed by Pavel Durov and his brother Nikolai, and the team is based in Dubai.

If you're comparing it with the obvious rival, my Telegram and WhatsApp head-to-head goes through the differences in detail.

Is Telegram right for your business?

Telegram suits businesses that want to talk to a lot of people at once. It's less useful if your customers are all on another app and won't switch. Telegram itself says business users and small teams may like the large groups, usernames, desktop apps and file sharing.

I'd start with a channel, because it's the lowest-effort way to see whether your audience will follow you there: post useful updates and watch the view counts. Skip running a big public group until you've got someone to moderate it, because 200,000 members is a limit, not a promise that it'll stay friendly. And skip third-party AI bots for anything customer-related until you've read whose service you're trusting.

Frequently asked questions

What is Telegram used for?

People use Telegram for private chats, group conversations of up to 200,000 members, one-way broadcast channels with unlimited subscribers, voice and video calls, and sharing large files.

Is Telegram free?

Yes. Telegram says private messaging is free and will stay free, with no ads in private chats. It offers an optional paid Telegram Premium subscription with extra features.

Is Telegram end-to-end encrypted?

Only Secret Chats and calls, according to Telegram. Ordinary cloud chats use server-client encryption so they can sync across all your devices.

Do I need to share my phone number on Telegram?

Not with everyone. Your account runs on your mobile number, but a public username lets people find and message you without seeing it. The username is optional.

What's the difference between a Telegram group and a channel?

Groups are for conversation and hold up to 200,000 members. Channels are for broadcasting to unlimited subscribers, and posts are signed with the channel's name rather than yours.
