Best Stud Finder Apps (2026): 10 Phone Apps Compared

The best stud finder app for you depends on what's in your wall and which phone you have. Most of these apps read your phone's magnetic sensor, so they pick up the screws and nails that hold drywall to a stud rather than the wood itself. A few add levels and drill guides, and one needs a separate plug-in device.

A stud finder app turns the phone in your pocket into a quick check before you drill. That's handy when you're hanging a shelf or mounting a TV, but the apps aren't all built the same way, and the differences aren't obvious at a glance.

This list sticks to what each app's own store listing or website says, read as of Nov 2026. It's alphabetical and in no particular order. Several apps share the name Stud Finder, so I've put the developer in brackets to tell them apart. Nothing here is a promise that an app will find every stud in your wall.

Ten stud finder apps, from magnet readers to a plug-in scanner

Stud Finder (Hanja Devi)

Best for: Detecting wood studs under drywall, plasterboard or stucco by sensing the metal in them, from a listing that's upfront about what limits it.

Stud Finder (Tue Nguyen Minh)

Best for: Locating magnetic changes that may point to screws, nails or other ferrous metal behind a wall, shown with a needle, a live graph and stronger sounds.

Stud Finder - Metal Detector (Andrei Nemtsou)

Best for: A no-frills scan: move the phone along the wall and it beeps, with the indicator turning red, when it meets nails, screws or wiring.

Stud Finder Pro: Wall Scanner

Best for: Scanning for studs, hidden metal, pipes, wires and rebar, then picking anchors, drill bits and leveling tools for the install in the same app.

Stud Finder Wall Wood Detector

Best for: Measuring the gap between two studs against standard framing spacing, with a live on-screen signal map of what the phone's magnetometer picks up.

Stud Finder WallScan

Best for: Reading the wall through visual gauges and live feedback, with a quick start guide and sensitivity and alerts you can tune to your job.

Stud Finder: AI Metal Detector

Best for: Finding the screws in wood studs and following steel studs with the iPhone's magnetometer, after a guided calibration, with no internet needed.

Studkit: Stud Finder & 5 More

Best for: Checking walls for studs, nails and pipes, then switching to a bubble level, laser cross, drill guide, unit converter or timestamp camera in one app.

Walabot DIY

Best for: Pairing the maker's own scanning device with your phone to locate studs, pipes, wires and movement on drywall, rather than using the phone's sensor.

Wall Stud Finder Beam Detector

Best for: Picking up the weak magnetic fields of nails and screws in studs, plus wires, pipes and rebar, with an on-screen ruler, protractor and level meter.

Why most apps find the screws, not the wood

Read the listings side by side and one thing keeps coming up. The Stud Finder (Tue Nguyen Minh) listing says the app uses your phone's built-in magnetic sensor 'to locate magnetic changes that may indicate screws, nails, or other ferrous metal behind a wall'. Stud Finder: AI Metal Detector says it 'detects ferrous metal (iron, steel)', and adds a plain note that the magnetometer 'does not see wood, plastic, copper or aluminum'.

So on drywall fixed to wood studs, these apps are looking for the metal fasteners that hold the board to each stud. Studkit's listing describes detecting 'nails inside wood studs and metal studs in any wall', and the AI Metal Detector page says that on a wood stud it 'beeps at each screw, and on a steel stud it beeps all along'. That's the split most people wouldn't guess: the app finds the stud by finding its screws.

The limits the listings admit to

The most useful lines on these pages are the honest ones. The Stud Finder (Hanja Devi) listing says 'The performance of the app is limited by the construction of the wall', along with a phone cover and the material of the nails in the studs. The Andrei Nemtsou app notes that it 'may not work with older phone models'. And Studkit's own list of what it won't find includes 'plastic, PEX or copper pipes' and 'electrical wires (unless in metal conduit)'.

Some apps reach a little wider. Stud Finder Pro: Wall Scanner says it helps 'find studs, hidden metal, pipes, wires, and rebar from your iPhone', and Wall Stud Finder Beam Detector lists 'basic alerts for live electrical wiring'. Read each app's own wording about pipes and cables before you rely on it near either.

Phone-only apps and the one that needs a device

Nine entries here use only the phone. Walabot DIY is different. Its app listing asks you to connect the maker's own scanning device to your phone, and says it 'Locates studs, pipes, wires, and movement' and 'Works on drywall'. If you'd rather not get extra hardware, it isn't the one for you. If you already own the device, it's the app you'll need.

Apps that double as a DIY toolkit

A few apps bundle the other tools you'd reach for on the same job. Studkit: Stud Finder & 5 More packs a 'bubble level, laser cross, drill guide, mm to inch converter, and timestamp camera' into one app. Stud Finder Pro pairs its wall scan with a bit guide, a bit chart, levels and a photo logger, and the Beam Detector app adds an on-screen ruler, protractor and level meter. Handy if you'd rather keep one app on your phone instead of four.

How to get a cleaner reading from a phone

  • Take the case off. One listing says to remove the phone case before calibrating, and another says 'especially MagSafe' ones.
  • Calibrate away from metal. The same maker suggests calibrating away from walls, tables, appliances and laptops.
  • Know where your sensor is. One app marks the spot to pass over the wall and notes it sits at the top on some iPhones and at the bottom on others.
  • Go slowly. Hold the back of the phone flat against the wall and sweep slowly, as Studkit's listing describes.
  • Sweep twice. One maker's site suggests sweeping at two different heights, since a real stud shows up in the same place both times.
  • Mark steel studs at both edges. The same site says a steel stud reads as a broad band rather than a spike, so mark both edges and drill the middle.

Five questions to ask before you drill

  1. Does this app read the phone's magnetic sensor, or does it need a separate device?
  2. Does it list my phone model, or warn that older phones may not work?
  3. Does it ask for a calibration step, and have I done it away from metal?
  4. What does its listing say about pipes and wires?
  5. Which tools are free, and which sit behind a subscription?

My advice before you trust a phone with a drill

Start with the simplest question: is there metal in this wall where I'd expect a stud? A phone app that reads the magnetic sensor is a quick first check, as long as you remember it's finding the fasteners, not the timber. Sweep twice, mark both readings and drill a small pilot hole first. For heavy loads, or anywhere near pipes and cables, take the line one maker gives in its own FAQ, which answers 'Can it replace a professional inspection?' with a plain 'No.'

If a test hole lands in the wrong spot, my guide on how to fill nail holes in walls will tidy it up. And if the stud finder is the first step of a bigger job, my walk-through of installing a ceiling fan yourself is a good next read.

Frequently asked questions

Do stud finder apps work?

They can help, within limits. Most phone apps read the magnetic sensor, so they react to the screws and nails that hold drywall to a stud, or to a metal stud, rather than the wood. One listing says its performance is limited by the wall's construction, a phone cover and the material of the nails, so treat a reading as a guide.

Can a phone find wood studs?

Not directly. One app's listing says the magnetometer does not see wood, plastic, copper or aluminum. These apps find wood studs by picking up the metal fasteners in them.

Do stud finder apps work on Android?

Some do. Most apps on this list are iPhone apps, while at least one names both iPhone and Android on its own site. Check the store for your phone before you download.

Do I need extra hardware?

Not for most of them. Most of these apps use the phone's own sensor. The exception here is an app that pairs with a separate scanning device, which you'd need to get first.

Can a stud finder app find pipes and wires?

Some listings name pipes, wires and rebar, and one adds basic alerts for live wiring. Another app's own list of what it won't find includes plastic and copper pipes, and wires unless they're in metal conduit, so take care near plumbing and cables.

Are stud finder apps free?

Several are free to download, and some name a free version or say they're free to try on their own pages, as of Nov 2026. Some keep features such as unlimited scanning behind a subscription, so check the listing first.
